Kapali Panguni Utsavam Nadaswaram artistes Pending Payment

Over three weeks has elapsed since the Panguni Utsavam but the Nadaswaram artistes who presented at the street processions have still not been paid
Two years ago, this writer featured a story on how the payments to the Nadaswaram artistes including those who came from remote locations to perform during the street processions at the Panguni Utsavam of the Kapaleeswarar temple were unduly delayed. History is now repeating itself with the payment not made to the Nadaswaram artistes who performed last month at the Panguni utsavam.

Many of these artistes had come from outside the city to present at the street processions in the evening. It is now well over three weeks since the completion of the utsavam but these traditional artistes have still not been paid by the organisers of the festivals. The invitation and programme schedule of the Panguni Utsavam says that the nadasawaram artistes are being sponsored by Preetha Reddy and Vijaykumar Reddy, who is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Kapaleeswarar temple.
Interestingly, the treatment meted out to the popular and renowned artistes who presented Kutcheris  in front of the Navarathri Mandapam at the Vidayatri Utsavam was in complete contrast as they were paid immediately.

51year old Nadaswaram artiste Iyappan who hails from Thiru Mei Gnanam has been presenting Nadaswaram for the last four decades including in early years at Lalitha Parameswari temple in Thiru mee Yechur and Thirupengode near Vaitheeswaran Koil. He was devotionally excited along with his brother to present at the Panguni Utsavam. His forefathers have been presenting Nadaswaram for 8 generations. But almost a month after his presentation at the Kapali utsavam, he is saddened at the treatment met out to the traditional artistes who performed at the street procession. He told this writer that Nadam and Vedam are two eyes of the Lord “The Nadaswaram artistes present in front of the Lord while the Vedic Scholars and Thevaram Othuvars follow the Lord during the processions. There is a great Sampradayam about Nadaswaram and temple festivals. My appa and Guru asked us to keep the Nadaswaram alive and protect it during our lifetime. Each Swaram is a Devathai and the belief is that they are listening to our presentation and blessing us.”
"We felt blessed to have performed at the grand Panguni Utsavam at the Kapaleeswarar temple. We only want to be respected as a traditional artiste. The Sambhavanai is a mark of respect to the artistes who delighted the Lord with their performance. To not be paid after such a long time much after the utsavam has ended is saddening. We console ourselves that we were able to present in front of Kapaleeswarar and that feeling is unmatched."

55 year old Murugavel hails from Sithakadu. He performed on the Adikaara Nandi day. He too told this writer that he considers it a blessing to have performed on such a special occasion in front of thousands of devotees. He says that Asthana Vidwan Mohan Dass took great care of them organising food, coffee and water. "But to not receive the Sambhavanai for our performance till date is saddening but that is what Swami has decided and we have no complaints about that. The satisfaction for us is from the performance and happiness that we saw on the faces of the devotees."

It is hoped that the authorities will clear the payment at the earliest to these traditional artistes.

Manakkal Nambi Varadaraja Perumal Temple

At the historic birth place of Vaishnavite Acharya Manakkal Nambi, this archaka family continues to perform service with devotional commitment
It is 9am on the Rama Navami day (April 17). The Varadaraja Perumal temple in Manakkal wears a deserted look. There are no devotees in sight but inside the Sannidhi Rajagopalan Bhattar is all alone performing a Thirumanjanam with great devotional commitment. His appa Varadaraja Bhattar had served at the temple for several decades till his death in 2011. Most of the original inhabitants have left the Agraharam with Natarajan, formerly of Kothari Sugars and uncle of Sivakumar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/04/sivakumar-infosys-to-namasankeerthanam.html), one of the few remaining old timers in this historic temple town. It is he who has organised the Thirumanjanam on the auspicious occasion of Rama Navami.

Avathara Sthalam of Manakkal Nambi
It was here that Rama Mishrar was born. He went on to become one of the most prominent of the Sishyas of Uyyakondan of Thiruvellarai (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2016/10/thiru-vellarai-divya-desam.html). When Uyyakondan’s daughters found it difficult to cross the path from Cauvery as it was soggy, Rama Mishrar lay flat and asked them to walk over him.  So pleased was Uyyakondan with his service that he anointed him as ‘Manakkal’ Nambi and designated him as his successor.
Transforms Alavanthar
Similar to Kumudavalli transforming Thiru Mangai Azhvaar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2016/04/vedu-pari-thiruvali-thirunagari.html), it was Manakkal Nambi who reformed Yamunai Thuraivan. When Alavanthar immersed himself in his kingdom, it was Manakkal Nambi who resurrected him back to true the Vaishnavite way. When basking in power, Alavanthar refused him entry, Manakkal Nambi presented a special vegetable leaf to the kitchen. The food was so tasty that Alavanthar began to consume it every day. When Manakkal Nambi stopped this service, Alavanthar, on enquiry, came to know about the contribution of Manakkal Nambi and provided him a special entry anytime. It was then that Manakkal Nambi took Alavanthar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2013/07/kurugai-kaavalappan-koil.html) to Srirangam for a darshan of Ranganatha and transformed him providing him devotional enlightenment.

Avathara Utsavam on Maasi Magam
At the Varadaraja Perumal temple, the avathara utsavam of Manakkal Nambi is celebrated in a grand way on Maasi Magam with a Thirumanjanam and a street procession of Perumal and Manakkal Nambi. 10 day Gokulashtami is also celebrated at the temple.
Rajagopalan Bhattar has committed himself to continuing the archaka service that his appa and later his elder brother had performed at this acharya avathara sthalam. And that is commendable at a time when most traditionalists are moving away from ancestral locations to cities seeking greener pastures.

The temple is open from 8am-11am and 5pm to 8pm. Contact: Rajagopalan Bhattar @ 94883 91485

Venu Srinivasan Anbil Nambi Temple Restoration

A decade after the massive restoration of the Srirangam temple, Venu Srinivasan is back with another classy restoration - this time at Anbil Divya Desam
Those that had visited the Vadivazhagiya Nambi Divya Desam at Anbil, located 6kms east of Lalgudi, a couple of decades ago would remember and recall the dilapidated state of the temple. Before a battle, Sundara Raja Chozhan, the father of Raja Raja Chozhan, had sought the blessings of Vadivazhagiya Nambi. Emerging victorious, he is said to have come back here and built the temple in its current form.

A Deserted Temple two decades ago
In the not too distant past, there was a vibrant agraharam in Anbil. A Vedic Patshala was an integral part of the Anbil and a mimaamsa conference too had been held there. Historically, this had been a prosperous temple town, but by the turn of the century, hundreds of original inhabitants had left this Divya Desam seeking greener pastures elsewhere in bigger cities, reducing this ancient temple town to just a few traditional Vaishnavite families.  Things had turned for the worse and there were were very few devotees at the temple. Varadaraja Bhattar, the lone priest of the time, waited endlessly at the entrance for the next devotee to arrive. Many of the historical utsavams too had become a thing of the past. Joint procession of Vadivazhagiya Nambi with Purushottammar of Uthamar Koil to Coloroon on Maasi Magam had been the biggest festival of the year.

Thiru Mazhisai Azhvaar's praise
It was a real low phase for the temple praised by Thirumazhisai Azhvaar. While referring to Lord Vishnu in his reclining posture, Thirumazhisai Azhvaar talks about Anbil (Sundararaja Perumal) alongside Srirangam Ranganathar, Appaala Ranganathar (Koviladi), Thiru Kudanthai (Sarangapani), Thiru Evvul, Thiru Vekka and Thiru Paarkadal.

Venu is back in the Srirangam region
After the massive restoration at the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/11/venu-srinivasan-srirangam-temple.html) last decade, TVS’ Venu Srinivasan is back in the region taking up the restoration of the historic Anbil Sundararaja Perumal temple. While the consecration is still sometime away, there is already a positive vibration at the temple.

Revival of Brahmotsavam and the Chariot Festival
A couple of years earlier, Venu Srinivasan rebuilt the four sacred streets around the temple that too had been in a dilapidated state. This restoration enabled the new Chariot to run during the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam that had been revived after several decades.

As part of the current restoration exercise, the entire floor both inside the Sannidhi and around the prakaras, has been re-laid with traditional stones. One now finds a beautiful nandavanam similar to the one at Singar Koil, Srirangam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/10/srirangam-singar-koil-transformational.html). A new electrical system is being installed dismantling the old wires that were hanging all over.

Restoring the dilapidated Madapalli
There is a full time paricharakar to present daily Thaligai to Perumal but he has had to work under stressful conditions as the madapalli was in a dilapidated state. This too is being restored back to its traditional state. The Gopuram and Vimanams have been painted afresh and will be unveiled during the consecration.

From Uthamar Koil to Kandiyur via Anbil Nambi
To find salvation from Brahmma’s curse, Shiva went on a pilgrimage begging for food, with Brahmma’s skull as the begging vessel. Every time someone filled the vessel with food, Shiva found to his horror that it vanished immediately. At Uthamar Koil (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2011/12/tri-murthy-utsavam-in-uthamar-koil.html), Goddess Lakshmi filled the vessel with food, thus ending Shiva’s hunger. However, to Shiva’s dismay, Brahmma’s skull still lay fixed on his hand. Shiva is believed to have visited this place from Uthamar Koil before going to Kandiyur (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2007/04/108-divya-desam-kandiyur.html) where he finally got salvation.

In centuries gone by, devotees used to walk across the Coloroon from Koviladi Divya Desam, a distance of 2 kms.

The Name
Legend has it that Sage Durvasa cursed Mandaka Rishi for making him wait at his ashrama and turned him into a frog. Wanting to get back his human form, Mandaka Rishi underwent penance at this place and his prayers were finally answered, with Vishnu appearing before the Rishi and liberating him from Durvasa’s curse. Hence, this place is called Mandaka (Frog) Puri.
Varadarajan Bhattar was extraordinarily committed to this Divya Desam even though there was not much income during the time he served at the temple.  Unfortunately, he died young leaving the teenaged son to take over from him. He would have been happy at the current transformation at the temple, the pooja kramam and utsavam revival by his son Aravamudhan and the physical infrastructure to its traditional form by Venu Srinivasan.
                                           Aravamudhan Bhattar

The Maniyakaarar of Ranganathaswamy temple R Sridhar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/03/srirangam-temple-time-keeper.html) revived the padippu on the occasion of Kaisika Ekadasi at this temple a couple of years ago. While this Divya Desam is in a remote location, there is already a sizeable increase in the devotee turnout as the devotional feel is back at the temple. Following the consecration, it is likely this number will only go up and the temple will be back to its glorious past with more historical utsavams being revived.

The temple is open from 7am-1230pm and 4pm-8pm. Contact : Aravamudhan Bhattar @ 90034 69591

Kapali Temple one year Pushpa Kainkaryam stopped by HRCE

Last month, Kapali temple authorities ruthlessly and indiscriminately stopped the Pushpa Kainkaryam - Despite repeated promises made by the JC, the authorities have not given permission to restart the Kainkaryam inside the temple
Worshippers' representative 'tweets and meets' but HRCE unmoved
Temple JC cannot interfere in and restrict Devotees' Traditional and Pious Pushpa Kainkaryam inside the temple complex - TR Ramesh, President, Temple Worshippers Society
On March 4, this section featured a story on the year long Pushpa Kainkaryam that a team of around 30 devotees headed by GG Sivakumar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/03/kapali-temple-pushpa-kainkaryam-gg.html) had been performing sitting every evening at the Navarathri Mandapam of the Kapaleeswarar temple. Sivakumar also performs voluntary service as a senior member of the State Vigilance Committee managing crowds during the big utsavams at the Kapaleeswarar temple.

Chief Priests Venkatasubramanian Shivachariar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/07/kapaleeswarar-temple-jayakanthan.html) and Balaji Gurukal (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/04/kapali-temple-balaji-gurukal.html) too had played a positive role in the first phase of this Kainkaryam encouraging this team to perform the pushpa kainkaryam and present the flower garlands to be draped on multiple idols at the temple every morning.

A Bolt from the Blue to the Kainkaryapakas
Unfortunately, out of the blue, the then Maniyakaarar of the temple (who has since been suspended for 'not maintaining proper records of Ubayadarars') told Sivakumar that one of the trustees had asked for the Kainkaryam to be stopped with immediate effect and that they could no more continue this kainkaryam. When Sivakumar asked the reason, the Maniyakaarar told him that the trustee had said that the navarathri mandapam was left uncleaned!!!

Every devotee at the temple who has visited the Artha Jaama Pooja over the last year are eyes to the fact that this team keeps the mandapam 'spic and span' after the completion of their knotting work every evening. And how did the trustee suddenly find this as a reason after one year of service!!!

This came as a bolt from the blue to the set of Kainkaryapakas who had been devoting a couple of hours every evening for a year in this service of knotting the flowers at the Navarathri Mandapam and presenting the flower garlands. While a majority of the service personnel were mid aged women, there were also a few like IITian Shiv Priya Viswanathan who saw the pushpa kainkaryam as a great blessing of Kapaleeswarar and Karpagambal to be bestowed on her at such a young age. The pulling back of the permission by the HRCE has come as a great shock to all the Pushpa Kainkarya personnel.
Kapali temple Trustees Tirunavukarasu and Arumugam too had been great admirers of this selfless Kainkaryam ever since it began a year ago at the start of the Vasantha Utsavam in 2023. This year's Vasantha Utsavam for Singaravellar is currently on at the Kapaleeswarar temple but sadly for the set of Pushpa Kainkarya personnel who had started this sacred service in Chitrai of last year, it has been an endless wait of over a month hoping each day that the permission for resumption of their Kainkaryam inside the temple complex would come from the temple JC.

JC Promises to give permission to restart
Earlier this month, this writer met the temple JC Kavenitha to enquire about the reasons behind the stopping of the Pushpa Kainkaryam. She told this writer that she was happy with the way Sivakumar and his team had been performing the service since the time she had taken charge at the temple in June last year and promised to give them permission.

A week later, temple activist and President of the Temple Worshippers Society TR Ramesh (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2018/02/tr-ramesh-temple-activist.html) told this writer that he met the JC in her office reg the Pushpa Kainkaryam issue and that she too promised him that she will give Sivakumar permission immediately to continue the great work his team had been doing over the previous year.

Refusal to permit Kainkaryam against fundamental rights
When the permission was not granted, TR Ramesh tweeted on his X handle as to how the Kapaleeswarar temple authorities were not even allowing devotees to perform a pushpa kainkaryam inside the temple (https://x.com/trramesh/status/1779411464031261048?s=48&t=7YuQtV1XTGIFP11C5AgPMQ). On Sunday morning, he told this writer that pious and usable contributions by a devotee cannot be refused by a public temple. "Traditionally and piously strewn garlands within the temple precincts should be encouraged. Flowers are perishables and should be draped on the deities as quickly as possible. Such refusal would go against the fundamental religious rights of devotees guaranteed by the Constitution of India", Ramesh said.

JC cannot interfere in Pooja and Rituals
He added that the JC of the temple has no authority under the HRCE act to interfere in the poojas and rituals and that this selfless service of Pushpa Kainkaryam at the Navarathri Mandapam should be revived immediately.

When Sivakumar met the JC to check regarding the permission earlier this week, she asked him to perform this service sitting on the floor outside the side gate next to the Eastern Rajagopuram near the Pookadai. Sivakumar found this insulting and refused. He told this writer that his team comprised primarily of women members and that he could not ask them to sit between the two side gates on the eastern side to knot the flowers.

அள்ளி நீ வெண்ணை விழுங்க
அஞ்சாது அடியேன் அடித்தேன்
தெள்ளிய நீரில் எழுந்த
செங்கழுநீர் சூட்ட வாராய்

Ruthless and Indiscriminate use of HRCE Power
When the JC and the Board of Trustees should be encouraging such selfless service, especially this one involving presenting flower garland to the deities knotted within the sacred temple complex, they have been dismissive of this Kainkaryam and have ruthlessly used their power to stop this Kainkaryam.
Singaravellar - Will HE provide an answer?

The tweet of TR Ramesh last week that had reached the powers that be at the HRCE headquarters and the State Government too seem to have not had the desired effect of reviving this sacred Pushpa Kainkaryam.

The Greatness of Pushpa Kainkaryam
Vaishnavite Acharya Periyaazhvar refers to the greatness of Pushpa Kainkaryam in an entire decad of verses called ‘Poochoodal’(https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2015/09/krishna-poochoodal.html) and a ten day utsavam is exclusively dedicated to presentation of different varieties of flower garlands by devotees at the Srirangam temple every Chitrai (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/06/poochatru-utsavam-srirangam.html).

திரு உடையால் மணவாள

மருவி மனம் கமழுகின்ற
மல்லிகை பூச் சூட்ட வாராய்

Sivakumar told this writer on Sunday that till this morning he had not received permission from the temple to resume the kainkaryam within the temple complex.

After multiple representations and face to face meetings with the JC of the Kapaleeswarar temple, if the permission has not been granted for this sacred kainkaryam, one wonders as to what devotees of temples should do to serve the Lord selflessly.

Will the HR & CE minister PK Sekar Babu (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/05/hr-ce-minister-sekar-babu-on-roll.html) look into this issue immediately and direct the Kapali temple authorities to permit these sincere and committed devotees to continue the Pushpa Kainkaryam.

Kanchi Varadar Vadakalai Thenkalai Fight Outcome

A Long Time devotee of Kanchipuram files affidavit in the High Court praying for Rights in Vedic and Prabhandham Recital
Instead of fighting amongst themselves, Vadakalai and Thenkalai Sects should come together in the fight against the HRCE- TR Ramesh
Matadhipathis and Acharyas have to intervene to stop this infighting- MAV

Exactly a year ago, this section had featured a couple of stories on the battle between Thenkalai and Vadakalai sects at the Varadajaperumal temple in Kanchipuram. This section had predicted then that the delay in an amicable solution could have repercussions for the two sects. And that is what has happened (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/05/kanchi-varadar-brahmotsavam-mav.html).

A share in the Recital Rights
This week, just under a month before the start of the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, Premnath Singh, a Rajput (he adds ‘Non-Brahmin) and a long time devotee of Varadaraja Perumal has filed an affidavit, a copy of which is available with this writer at the Madras High Court seeking rights in Prabhandham and Vedic recital. He says that he has been present at the Utsavams at the Devarajaswamy temple in Kanchipuram for a long time. Pointing to the fights between the two sects relating to recital of Vedas, Prabhandham and Stothrams, he says in the affidavit that non brahmins should not be prevented from performing these services and that Purana Recitals and Mantra Pushapam services should not be restricted to a select few. He also says that similar to the earlier HC order removing the discrimination in presentation of Theertham and Prasadam only to select people following the conclusion of the Ghoshti, the recital of the Vedas and Prabhandham at the Varadaraja Perumal temple during the Ghosti as well as services relating to Mantra Pushpam and Purana recital should be thrown open to people of all castes and gender.

Temple Activist and President of the Temple Worshippers Society TR Ramesh (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2018/02/tr-ramesh-temple-activist.html) has been actively involved in campaigns against the HRCE for over a decade and has focused all his attention on sending the HRCE out of TN temples.

Vadakalai and Thenkalai sects should come together to fight against the HRCE
On Thursday morning, he told this writer with a tinge of sadness in the way a conversation unfolded recently at the Madras High Court "Both the Vadakalai and Thenkalai sects were at the court recently and each of them came to me asking for my opinion and seeking solution to the battle between the two sects at Kanchipuram. I told them that instead of coming together in their fight against the HRCE, you are fighting amongst yourselves and that is the biggest disservice you are doing to the protection of temple Kainkaryam.”
Much to Ramesh’s shock, both the sects who came to him on their own seeking his opinion and advice, went away after hearing his views on trying to bring together the two sects for the larger cause. He bemoans the fact that in TN, there are only a couple of them fighting against the HRCEs and Sects like these are fighting amongst themselves and thus causing much long term damage to the traditions and practices.

Don't change historical practices - MAV
On Wednesday evening, former HOD (Vaishnavism), Madras University and long-standing leader of the Prabhandham Ghoshti at Thiruvallikeni, MA Venkatakrishnan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/05/ma-venkatakrishnan-thiruvallikeni-divya_16.html), who has no reservations in calling himself a Thenkalai fanatic, told this writer ahead of the ninth day procession of the Chitrai Brahmotsavam at the Parthasarathy Perumal temple that the historical practices relating to Vedic and Prabhandham recital as per the 1915 judgement which was followed till 2020 without any deviation should be continued as is at the Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchpuram and no changes should be brought into this practice.
Requests Matathipathis to intervene
MAV, who created hundreds of prabhandham students at Thiruvallikeni right from the 1970s told this writer that unless Matadhipathis and Acharya purushas intervene and prevent their disciples from quarrelling, he does not see a future for Sri Vaishnavism.

Ramesh is of the view that all temple traditions and practices that were in vogue in 1947 cannot be modified and new innovations cannot be brought it. Given this, he believes that petitions such as these will not stand the test of law.

It would be a step in the positive direction for the Vadakalai (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/05/kanchipuram-brahmotsavam-prabhandham.html) and Thenkalai sects to become united in protecting their services relating to the sacred recitals.

Chidambaram Divya Desam Brahmotsavam Revival

HR & CE Minister Sekar Babu is keen to revive the Brahmotsavam at Govindaraja Perumal Temple in Chidambaram but Temple Activist TR Ramesh is clear that the Utsavam cannot take place at the temple owned by Pothu Dikshithars
In early 2018, this writer was at the through the night procession from the Govindaraja Perumal temple in Chidambaram to Killai, 15kms away for the Theerthavari Utsavam on the occasion of Maasi Magam Utsavam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2018/04/chidambaram-maasi-magam-utsavam_13.html). It is the longest street procession at this Divya Desam , with Perumal leaving the temple at 6pm with the Theerthavari at Killai at 6am the next morning. The then 85 year old Theerthakarar Prof AV Rangachari had told this writer that he was delighted that this historical utsavam could take place and the night long procession could be continued at this point of time. Six months prior, in a long chat with this writer in front of the Thayar Sannidhi, he had also expressed as one of his life time wishes the revival of the Brahmotsavam that had not been conducted in the 20th Century.

Prof AVR has several accomplishments to his credit at the Govindaraja Perumal temple where he had been closely associated for over seven decades but the non-conduct of the Brahmotsavam has always remained a sore point for him. He had made several attempts but the Brahmotsavam did not seem to be in sight.

HRCE Commissioner order the Conduct of the Brahmotsavam
After several years of back and forth on this issue, the Commissioner of the HRCE (while the Sabanayakar temple is managed by the Pothu Dikshithars, the Perumal Koil is administered by the HRCE) issued an order, in February, for the conduct of the Brahmotsavam with the dates for the ten day utsavam being fixed for this Vaikasi (May 20 to 29).

Minister keen to revive the Brahmotsavam
HRCE Minister PK Sekar Babu has been at loggerheads with the Chidambaram temple (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/07/chidambaram-dikshithars-hrce-battle.html) in recent times including on the issue relating to public darshan at the Kanakasabhai. This section had featured a story on that issue in July last year. He has now taken special interest in the revival of the Brahmotsavam at the Perumal temple and is keen for this to be conducted from this year.
He told this writer on Friday morning that this is a temple praised by the Vaishnavite Saint Poets and the temple had seen glorious times in the past “Should a Brahmotsavam not be conducted in a Divya Desam like this. Is it not good for this historical temple? Devotees have asked me as to why the big annual utsavam is not conducted in this temple and that is the reason for my interest to revive the Brahmotsavam at this Divya Desam.”

The start of the Utsavam is just a fortnight away as per the order of the Commissioner but there are already several challenges including question marks over the very conduct of the Brahmotsavam.

Brahmotsavam cannot be conducted- TR Ramesh
Temple Activist and President of the Temple Worshippers Society TR Ramesh (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2018/02/tr-ramesh-temple-activist.html) was instrumental in securing back for the Pothu Dikshithars their ownership rights of the Sabanayakar temple over a decade ago. He has filed a case in the Madras High Court against the utsavam being commenced now and is clear that one point alone is enough for the Brahmotsavam to not be started now or anytime in the future “In 1918, representatives of the Govindaraja Perumal temple filed a case regarding issues relating to keys of the temple gates being with the Dikshithars and the resultant challenges in them being able to perform poojas during utsavam times. After hearing all the parties on this issue, the court issued an order in 1920 wherein it said that the Brahmotsavam had not been celebrated in recent memory. In fact, in 1860, the Perumal temple authorities had given up the right of celebrating the Brahmotsavam. This is mainly a Saivite temple and the Dikshithars would open and close the gates for utsavams as existing at that point of time (in 1920)."
As per this 1920 judgement, the festivals of the Perumal temple had been finalised and the civil right of both sides clearly demarked. At that time there was no Brahmotsavam and as per the judgement, no new utsavams involving long street processions that go into late night could be conducted. No one went on appeal for any length of time after this judgement. Matter had been finally decided in 1920 and this cannot be reopened now after over a100 years”, Ramesh told this writer on Friday.

As an additional point to strengthen his argument, he said that a temple practice that was not in vogue in 1947 cannot be started afresh now. "No new innovation is possible in temples and for that reason, the Brahmotsavam cannot be newly initiated now.”

The priest at the Govindaraja Perumal temple told this writer earlier this week that all the vahanas are at the Ramar temple on the West Street “We need a place for the Vahanas to be kept inside the temple complex and Pothu Dikshithars have to provide us that space.”

Why is the activist stopping the Brahmotsavam in a Divya Desam
Like he has in the past, Sekar Babu hit out at the temple activist when talking to this writer this morning “If we get the Brahmotsavam going at the Chidambaram Perumal temple, it will be seen as us working towards the welfare of the Hindu devotees as well as the development of the temples in TN. The temple activist does not want us to revive this utsavam as it will be an important positive development for this Divya Desam and a success for the HR & CE. But we will ensure that this utsavam takes place with the appropriate order of the High Court.”

Ramesh told this writer this week that this is Pothu Dikshithar’s temple and they hold all the rights at this temple.“Any activity within the temple can be done only with their permission" says Ramesh.

He is clear that the HR & CE cannot go ahead with the Utsavam as per the Commissioner’s order “They have no right to conduct the utsavam and I will not allow that to happen.”

The court case was slated for this week but has now been adjourned to May 10, just ten days before the Brahmotsavam is expected to begin.

While the recital of the Prabhandham and Vedas is an issue at the upcoming Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at the Varadaraja Perumal Divya Desam in Kanchipuram (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2007/11/108-divya-desam-thirukachi-athigiri.html), the very conduct of the Brahmotsavam at the Govindaraja Perumal temple in Chidambaram is an issue that will soon come up at the court. Both these issues are likely to see some decisions at the court over the next fortnight.

Ramesh willing to help Chidambaram Perumal Trustees
While the conduct of the Brahmotsavam is a specific pooja - utsavam related issue at the Chidambaram Perumal temple with the HRCE minister keen for the utsavam to be revived, Ramesh has a larger goal in sight. He told this writer that he is eager and willing to help the trustees of Govindaraja Perumal temple and free them from Govt control just like he had done a decade ago at the Sabanayakar temple. And then the Pothu Dikshithars and the Perumal Bhattars can work closely amongst themselves. While the immediate task for the Perumal temple priests and trustees is to see if the Brahmotsavam can be revived for the devotees to enjoy Vahana processions, Ramesh has given them something to ponder over and for them to see if they would like to take his offer to help them.

This section will track the developments at the Chidambaram temple.

TN's Moment of Glory in Umpiring
Long Term Commitment  and ‘Staying in the Game’ has led Madan to the top of the world in Umpiring
After a few frustrating years in the middle of the previous decade that he saw through with great patience and balance, he is now where he deserves to be and is one of the two umpires from India to be chosen for the T20 World Cup

Way back in 2011, the then TNCA Secretary, KS Viswanathan told this writer that JR Madanagopal was the best player turned umpire after Venkataraghavan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/04/venkataraghavan75.html). He had predicted that Madan would make it big in umpire, something that he was not able to do as a player. After some low moments in the middle of the previous decade, Madan (Maddy to his cricketing friends) has bounced back strongly and emerged as a top umpire in India in the last couple of years. This week he has been chosen as one of the only two umpires from India to officiate in the T20 World Cup that starts next month. It is a transformational moment for Madan as he makes the jump right to the top of the Umpiring World.

Had to slog it out and stay committed
Even though he had got into the IPL as a fourth umpire in its initial years, he did not get the right breaks and even opportunities in the Ranji Trophy knock outs remained elusive for quite a long time. In his mind, there could easily have been thoughts if umpiring was going the same way as his playing days. Not once did he complain or air his disappointment. Credit to his professionalism, Madanagopal (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2016/10/madanagopal-j.html) had answered with his bat as a player when given the chance!!!! While he performed extraordinarily as a middle order batsman for TN in the late 1990s and early 2000s topping the batting charts for a couple of years, he did not get the right opportunities at the next level and missed out of higher laurels as a player. In his debut season and the next, he topped 500runs in Ranji cricket, scored two centuries but had already been dropped twice from the squad!!

Lets go Coaching Opportunities to focus on Umpiring
He was a great mentor and had several offers as a coach and there was a lucrative coaching career in the offing. But he had made up his mind that his future was in umpiring and unmindful of the delay in moving up to the next level, he continued to give his best and waited his time out hoping that one day that the fortunes would turn around for him (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/03/umpire-madanagopal-ipl-call.html).

Has been a great student of the game
Former BCCI Umpire R Radhakrishnan was the one who mentored several umpires in the early 2000s before they took the BCCI examination in 2006. He had told this writer earlier that out of the all the umpires that he had helped prepare for the exam, Madan was the one who had the most thought-provoking arguments "Even at that very early stage, he craved for perfection and did not accept unless he was 100% satisfied. He has that ability and inclination to learn everything in its absoluteness and thoroughly. His focus as an umpire is something to be emulated.”

Very Balanced Guy, Not swayed away by Moments
National Selector Sharath (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/01/sharath-s-national-selector.html) is just back after selecting the Indian team for the T20 World Cup. He has known Madan for over three decades and the two played together both for TN as well as in the same team in the first division league in Chennai. He has watched Madan closely during the time he was a Match Referee. He credits Madan for his great professionalism “Even though we were close friends, he always maintained a professional distance as an umpire. He is a very balanced guy and doesn’t get carried away with good or bad days. That is a big differentiator and is a stand out character. He is calm, composed, committed and sincere to his profession that has made him get to where he is now. He has put in a lot of effort in domestic cricket over the last two decades to come to this level. He is respected for his decision making and is high on skills and knowledge. He has been greatly consistent and will be a big inspiration for youngsters to get to the next level. Watching him Umpire will raise the bar for youngsters.”

Madan's Qualities enhance the image of umpiring
Madanagopal has always been one of the most likeable characters in TN cricket and every upcoming cricketer in Tamil Nadu has looked up to him for guidance and they still continue to, though he is now fully immersed in umpiring. During his playing days, Madanagopal had stayed under the radar and away from limelight and tried to do his best in the opportunities that came his way.  He has been ‘silent’ and ‘off radar’ as an umpire as well. ICC Match Referee V Narayanan Kutti had told this writer in 2021 that Madan’s Qualities enhance the image of Umpiring.

Balanced and Sound, temperamentally
Former Kerala leg spinner KN Ananthapadmanabhan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2016/09/ananthapadmanabhan-kn.html) got into umpiring in the same year as Madan, in 2006 and the two have umpired many matches together in recent years. He has found Madan to be an excellent team man “He understands the game well, is well versed with Laws and the playing conditions. He is balanced and sound temperamentally. He has outstanding communication skills. He is a full package and deserves all the success that is coming his way”, Ananthapadmanabhan told this writer on Sunday morning.

Takes to Yoga - Strengthens Mind and Mental Fitness
The middle of the last decade tested his commitment and patience as he did not get the opportunities to move to the next level in umpiring. It threw within himself a lot of questions on his future. He internalized the thought process strengthening his mind to face the challenges of an uncertain life. Yoga became an integral part of his life and helped his fitness. He is easily one of the fittest umpires around.

Most Studious as a player and an Umpire
KS Viswanathan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2015/02/ks-viswanathan-tnca-bcci-ipl.html),  CEO, CSK, has seen Madan as a player right from his teenage days. Both his brother DJ Gokulakrishnan(https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/03/gokulakrishnan-j.html), who passed away last year and Madan had always been likeable characters in the dressing room.
KSV told this writer on Sunday morning that that Madan has been one of the most studious persons both as a player and an umpire. "His knowledge of the laws of cricket ranks among the Best. Being a cricketer turned umpire, he knows how to control a game on the field. He is rated one of the best umpires in India and has a bright future."

Madan's presence exudes Confidence
Match referee P Ranganathan, who played first class cricket for Kerala in the 1980s, told this writer three years ago that Madan exudes confidence when he walks out on to the field “He displays a great deal of confidence as an umpire. His communication skills are very good. In addition to decision making, what is important for an umpire is the match management. I have seen the manner of his interactions with players and officials to be very good. A clear advantage for him is that he has been a first class player and hence he knows the players’ psyche and the ways of taking control of a match.”
Ranganathan had told this writer then that it was critical for Madan to get the right exposure in the first half of this decade and his elevation in his late 40s would give him sufficient number of years to showcase himself at the highest level. This week Madanagopal has had that big elevation right to the top of the Umpiring World as his appointment to the T20 World Cup marks yet another important milestone in his umpiring career. As has been his trait, Madan doesn't exhibit too much emotions even at this big moment of glory. He told this writer from Mumbai on a rest day away from cricket that he is happy with the appointment to the World Cup and believes that it is a good recognition!!!

This section wishes him the Best for the World Cup.

Manakkal Vedic Patshala 130 years

36year old Lakshmi Narasimha Ganapadigal has committed his lifetime to the Vedic Patshala in this Avathara Sthalam of Vaishnavite Acharya Manakkal Nambi
A dozen Vedic students from different parts of the country are devotionally committed to learning the Yajur Veda from acharya Lakshmi Narasimha Ganapadigal. On the Rama Navami morning, they watch with excitement the Tejas Express speed past their building crossing the Lalgudi station that is walking distance from their Patshala. In their free time in peak summer, these students, most of them in their teens, spend time playing tennis ball cricket.

But their daily life is tough. They wake up early at 4am for their morning class. Each of them have a strict schedule and follow a routine that is high on discipline and process. They are all enjoying this way of life founded on tradition in the company of their friendly acharya. All of them function as a family sharing jokes and chit chatting on different topics while they are away from their studies.

At the Avathara Sthalam of Vaishnavite Acharya Manakkal Nambi (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/04/manakkal-nambi-varadaraja-perumal-temple.html), this almost 130 years old A Ramaswamy Iyer Vedic Patshala continues to thrive. Manakkal is a remote town 1km east of Lalgudi very close the Vadivazhagiya Nambi Divya Desam at Anbil (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2007/11/108-divya-desam-anbil-vadivazhagiya.html).

36year old Lakshmi Narasimha Ganapadigal has been anchoring the Patshala as the acharya passing on his Vedic learnings to the next generation of students. Having learned at the Ramanashrama Patshala in Tiruvannamalai for a dozen years from 1999 under Senthinathan Ganapadigal, he was roped in by Mahalinga Ganapadigal who at that time had created scores of vedic students at this A Ramaswamy Iyer Yajur Veda Patshala in Manakkal.

10 Generations in Vedic Tradition
Lakshmi Narasimha Ganapadigal told this writer that 10 generations of his family have been serving as Ganapadigal focused on Vedic teachings. “With the situation turning sour in the second half of the previous century, my appa was forced to get into the corporate world. But my parents were keen for me to revive the family tradition of being a Vedic Acharya and hence sent me to the Patshala after I completed my class VII”, he said.

“After the completion of my patshala education, my acharya wanted me to spread Vedic messages in remote towns and hence sent me to Manakkal to this patshala.”
Unmindful of the remoteness of the location, Lakshmi Narasimha Ganapadigal is committed to continuing his service at this historical Patshala run by Trustee Vijayakumar, the great grandson of the founder of this Patshala. His parents and wife are great support encouraging and inspiring him into donning the role of a Vedic Acharya that his forefathers had so successfully performed over the last few centuries.

At a time when most Vedic Pundits are looking to monetise their knowledge by moving to top cities, it is commendable that this young Ganapadigal has been happy to be residing in this remote location spending time with these young kids passing on his Vedic Knowledge to them.

Rameswararam Temple EO Sivaram Kumar anchors removal of unauthorised Shiva Lingam and Nandi idols near the historical Kothandarama Temple in Dhanushkodi where Rama performed Pattabhisekam for Vibheeshana
HRCE removed, on Thursday (May 9) morning, the unauthorised installation, by devotees, of Shiva Lingam and Nandi idol on the sea shore near the Kothandaramaswamy temple, Dhanushkodi. It was here that Rama performed Pattabhishekam for Vibheeshana. The Aani Utsavam is the big day in the year at Dhanushkodi. A day before Hastham, the utsava deity of Rama makes his way to this temple for Vibheeshana Pattabhisekam. On the fourth Saturday of Puratasi Rama makes his way on the Garuda Vahana for Pancha Deepam at this temple.
The EO of Ramananathaswamy temple, Rameswaram, S. Sivaram Kumar told this writer on Thursday soon after the removal that these local residents and guides misled visiting devotees that this was the historical Shiva Lingam that Lord Rama performed Thiru Aradhana and collected money from these devotees.

“We secured the permission of the Tahsildar and the Police Chief to remove this unauthorised new installation of these idols. Under their supervision, we have this morning removed these idols and placed these in safe custody in Rameswaram”, he told this writer.

Sivaram Kumar, who was the EO at the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam, for a brief period last year has taken a number of welfare initiatives at the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram including keeping away touts and agents misleading devotees from the North of the country. He has also taken new initiatives for the construction of bathrooms, toilets, chappal stands and lockers outside the temple complex, each of which were previously manned by private personnel who fleeced unwary devotees.

Devotee Welfare Initiatives
It is refreshing to see the new EO taking positive devotee friendly steps soon after his taking charge and there has been a transformation at the temple over the last 6 months or so. He has put paid to agents fleecing the devotees for darshan with a process inside the temple complex that is now keeping the agents away. The queue system has been streamlined and devotees are having a new experience and a relief for the first time in year from the fleecing agents. He has also ensured periodic announcements  through a public address system to alert the devotees from not falling prey to the agents.

A 30000 litre purified water tank has been installed to supply free water to the devotees. Across the temple complex, new fans have been installed this year for those standing in the queue for darshan.

Toilet Block and Locker Room
The toilet block at the North Gate is nearing completion as well as the locker room. 850 mobiles can be kept for Rs.  5each compared to the Rs. 20 that was being charged previously by the private shops. At the new free slipper facility, 1000 pairs can be kept at any point of time.
450 Dormitories for Devotees
Very soon, a huge guest house measuring over 10000 sq ft will be ready near the reconstructed Rameswaram Railway station. Through this facility, the temple will be able to provide dormitory accommodation to 450 devotees.
The next time you visit the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram and the Kothandaramaswamy temple in Dhanuskodi, it could be altogether different experience for devotees, thanks to these initiatives of EO Sivaram Kumar.

Anbil Sathya Vageeswarar temple Hereditary Priests

This family of priests have been performing service for several generations at this Thiru Gnana Sambandar and Appar praised temple
94 year old Appadurai Gurukal is still active making it to the temple for the big utsavams in the year and guiding the next generation in the traditions
For several decades, during a phase when remote temples in TN went through severe challenges, Appadurai Gurukal stuck it out at the Sathya Vageeswarar temple, on the banks of Kollidam in Anbil, one praised by Saint Poets Thiru Gnana Sambandar and Thirunavukkarasar.

He is now 94 years old but those dark days in the second half of the previous century at this historical temple is still fresh in his memory. He began performing archaka service from the time he was in his mid 20s  in the 1950s and for a long time his monthly salary did not top Rs. 30 “There was no income at the temple. There were minimal devotees. We were a big family and it was a financial struggle. We have been performing hereditary service for many generations and hence wanted to continue this despite the lack of income”, he told this writer at his house in a long conversation looking back at the decades when priests in TN faced severe challenges.

Chitra Pournami - Big Celebrations
Chitra Pournami was the one big day in the year at the temple with devotees coming in bullock carts from surrounding villages for the Pancha Moorthy procession and the Thiru Kalyana Utsavam. It was the day when the entire temple town turns completely festive.
In the not too distant past, there had three vibrant agraharams in Anbil but almost all of the original inhabitants have left this temple town seeking greener pastures elsewhere leaving only the temple priests and a few service personnel as the only remaining traditionalists in this town.

Pradosham brings in devotee crowd
Appadurai Gurukal popularised the traditional utsavams. Pradosham gained traction and devotees flocked to the temple on these days every month. Big devotee crowd gathered on the occasion of Guru and Sani Peyarchi. He proudly says that he brought in Ubayadarars from across the state for the utsavams and that lifted the devotional spirit at the temple. He credits JC Munuswamy Naidu for increasing the salary of the archakas from the real low levels that existed at the time he joined the temple. He also receives a solid pension now for the decades of service he rendered at this temple and is happy that Sathya Vageeswarar has rewarded him with financial security in the second half of his life.

Son Muthu Swaminathan Gurukal takes over the reigns
His son Muthu Swaminathan Gurukal has been in charge over the last couple of decades at a time when the devotee crowd has increased on the back of the devotional wave that is sweeping TN temples. With plans to continue the hereditary service, he quit school after 7th class in the mid 1970s and began learning the agamas by cycling 6kms every day to Manakkal (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/05/manakkal-vedic-patshala-130-years.html). The family also performed pooja at the Sivan temple in Manakkal.
                                          Soundarya Nayaki

He recounts the troubled times during his childhood "It was a financially challenged childhood. The uchchi kalam prasadam was our food every day. Despite the challenges, I never thought of leaving the temple and exploring opportunities elsewhere as we wanted to follow in the footsteps of our forefathers. Temple service was our way of life and had complete faith in God that he would take care of us. We lived a contended a life keeping the expenses to the minimum. Once in a while, the outstation devotees would visit the temple and surprise us with a good Sambhavanai.”
“When my two sons were born, I dedicated them to this temple and was keen for them to continue our hereditary service. Both of them have shown great interest in temple service and I am grateful to God for taking this service into the next generation” says the 60 year old Muthu Swaminathan Gurukal.

He says that the Paadal Petra Sthalams have gained popularity once in recent times with devotees looking to visit the temples praised by the Saint Poets. He is happy with the trend of those visiting the Anbil Perumal Divya Desam making it to this temple. That has added to the devotee crowd at this temple in recent years, says Muthu Swaminathan Gurukal.

Financial Transformation over the last decade
With temple Kumbabhisekams and Homam gaining momentum, he has seen a surge in income over the last decade or so and there has been a positive financial transformation for the family so much so that he now owns a ‘Scorpio’ car and multiple cows at home. He says that the faith in God and the archaka service with unflinching devotion has borne fruits for the family and they are finally well settled now, a far cry from that phase in the 1960s and 70s.

Restoration Exercise to start this year
It has been over a couple of decades since the last Kumbabhisekam at the temple. Srirangam temple JC Mariappan has just visited the temple to finalise the repair works and renovation activities. TVS Motors’ Venu Srinivasan is currently in the process of completing the mega restoration exercise the Vadivazhagiya Nambi Perumal Divya Desam in Anbil (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/04/venu-srinivasan-anbil-nambi-temple.html).

Nonagenarian Appadurai Gurukal is hoping that he will take this up as well after he completes the consecration at the Perumal temple, which is half a km west of this temple. "If Venu Srinivasan takes up the restoration activity, the temple will be in safe hands and the repair works will take place as per tradition in the same way as the Perumal temple in Anbil", says Appadurai Gurukal with a twinkle in his eyes.

Srirangam Vasantha Utsavam 2024

The final day of the 9day Vasantha Utsavam was meant to be a grand finale to the year’s events at the Ranganathaswamy temple but the evening turned out to be a damp squib
No Chitrai Veethi procession, No Theerthavari in the Chandira Pushkarani and yet the Utsavam ended at 2.15am well over 9 hours after Namperumal left his abode at 5pm on Thursday evening
Celebrated in Vaikasi, the 9day Vasanthotsavam festival in Srirangam sees Namperumal, the Utsavar deity of Lord Ranganatha temple, enjoying the evenings at the Vasantha Mandapam in the middle of the water pool in the beautiful Nandavanam created by Thondaradi Podi Azhvaar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/01/thiru-mandangudi-thondaradipodi-azhvaar.html). The Nandavanam was so beautiful that when Thirumangai Azhvaar was in the process of building the now famous ‘Mathil’ of Srirangam, he slightly changed the direction of his construction on the Western side so as to not destroy any part of the Nandavanam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2009/12/dasavatharam-temple-in-srirangam.html).

Speciality of Vasantha Kaalam
Vasantha Kaalam is a period that brings in a nice breeze in the evenings, flowers including the colourful Vritchi blossom and a time that is neither too hot nor too wet with rains. It is believed that Namperumal's stay amidst the breezy trees and in the middle of the tank in the Nandavanam gave Lord him a lot of happiness. The belief is that one will be liberated from his curse if he drinks the sacred water of the Lord during the Vasantha Utsavam. For this reason, it is said that those who visit and offer their prayers to Lord Namperumal during this festival will find a new sense of happiness.
enroute to the Vasantha Mandapam - A forlorn look on Thursday night

Daasi Community- Dance Performance
In centuries gone by, people belonging to the Daasi Community were honoured during the Vasanthotsavam with a garland of the Lord. They were believed to have lit the lamp and performed a special dance in front of the Lord at the Vasantha Mandapam. They resided on the VOC Road in Srirangam, but do not anymore and hence this special performance during the Vasanthotsavam does not take place these days.

Vasantha Utsavam - The Final Day events
The original programme on the last evening of the Vasantha Utsavam was for Namperumal to go on a procession on the golden horse vahana around the Chitrai Streets, experience the Thiruvanthikaapu at the Thayar Sannidhi before continuing on the Chitrai street procession. Coming back to the temple via the Therku Vasal, Theerthavari was to be performed at the Chandira Pushkarani before he makes his way to the Vasantha Utsavam Mandapam for Thirumanjanam.
Rain dampens spirit
A light drizzle in the evening led to the cancellation of the Chitrai Streets procession much to the disappointment of the devotees who gathered in good numbers. Namperumal, atop the Golden Horse Vahana, left his abode at 5pm with the Prabhandham Thodakkam taking place by the side of the Ranga Vilas mandapam and he made his way alongside the Nandavanam on the Western side to the Ranganayaki Thayar Sannidhi for Thiruvanthikaappu.

Shatari protected by two canopies
A short burst of rain while he was in front of the Thayar Sannidhi meant that the Theerthavari could not be performed at the Chandira Pushkarani and Namperumal made his way alongside the 1000 pillared mandapam and the Ramanuja Sannidhi to the Garuda Sannidhi. Harish Bhattar, the hereditary archaka of the day who carried the Sacred Shatari, was escorted with a twin canopy so as to protect the Shatari from the drizzle.

Temple Maniyakarar R Sridharan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/03/srirangam-temple-time-keeper.html) told this writer late on Thursday night that since the seventh prakara procession  could not take place because of the rain, Namperumal made his way a full circle around the fifth prakara.

Theerthavari in front of Garuda Mandapam
Theerthavari was performed in front of the Garuda Sannidhi even as the Prabhandham Ghosti members continued their presentation of the Ramanuja Nootranthi Verses. It was past 8pm when after the satru murai of these sacred verses Namperumal made his way to the entrance of the Garuda Sannidhi.
It was 9pm when the Rakshana Bandana Bhattar Sridhar began a highly devotional two hour Thirumanjanam for Namperumal in front of the Garuda Sannidhi watched by about 50 devotees. It was to be a glorious night of Thirumanjanam at the Vasantha Mandapam amidst the tall trees on this Pournami Night. The full moon gave a glimpse of herself once in a while before going into hiding behind the clouds.
Veda Vyasa Bhattar's elaborate Kattiyam
With the Thirumanjan performed and completed just after 11pm, Veda Vyasa Bhattar, in his loud and strikingly clear voice, began an elaborate 45minute Kattiyam presentation that included several verses from Azhvaar’s paasurams. And then he was back again for a detailed Veda Vinnappam that sent the clock ticking well past 1am.

It was 1.30am when Namperumal began his return trip to his abode  led by the tunes of Pilot Araiyar Baradwaj Krishnan with his cymbals (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/01/barathwajan-araiyar-srirangam-goair.html) but it was not over yet. As seen in a story a few months in this section, Padippu Sridhar began a 25minute presentation highlighting the greatness of the Ranganatha temple and the utsavam in his Padippu in front of the Dwajasthambam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/02/srirangam-brahmotsavam-padippu-sridhar.html).
After over 9 hours, Namperumal made his way through the Naazhi Kettan Vaasal reaching his abode at 2.15am bringing to end the nine-day Vasantha Utsavam and also an end to the year’s utsavams at Srirangam.

The sign board detailing the schedule of the evening at the entrance of the Ariya Bhattal Vaasal indicated that Namperumal would be back at the Moolasthanam at midnight but even without the 4 streets procession and the Theerthavari at Chandira Pushkarani, the final evening’s events at the Vasantha Utsavam took over 9 hours and a return back past 2am!!! The temple authorities should look into the reasons for such a late return to the Gayathri mandapam.

The next big street procession will be to mark Aadi 18 when Namperumal makes his way to Amma Mandapam.

Kanchi Varadar Brahmotsavam Thenkalai Vadakalai Issues

The two Vaishnavite Sects came to knocks again on Friday during the Brahmotsavam reminding one of the remarks of the Muslim Judge in 1967

It is Friday (May 24) afternoon and the 7th day of the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at the Varadaraja Perumal temple in Kanchipuram. This writer, who was just back after experiencing a set of issues on the final evening of the Vasantha Utsavam at the Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/05/srirangam-vasantha-utsavam-2024.html), receives a video from a Kainkaryapaka at the Varadar temple that is highly disturbing. In the video, one of this writer’s favourite Prabhandham members at Thiruvallikeni is seen using foul words obviously at a Vadakalai who is likely to have instigated him into losing his temper and  making a gesture to kick him before he was calmed down by his team members. Irrespective of the right and wrong of the two sides, it was saddening to see a Prabhandham member who recites with great devotion at the highest tone at the street processions at Thiruvallikeni use such language to take on the other side.

An hour later, another video from Kanchipuram shows a Vadakalai member grabbing the mobile phone from a Thenkalai who was recording the sacred recital of the Vadakalai group and throwing it down on the ground.

Muslim Judge makes an important observation
These two incidents took one back to the judgement in September 1967, interestingly of a Muslim judge Kamaluddin on the Mantra Pushpam issue that was the subject matter of the hearing that year.

While he gave a specific order relating to that issue, he ended his order raising a very important matter that bears resonance to the above two incidents on Friday. The Judge in his final remark said “Before I conclude, I observe that it is sad and strange that in these days when great philosophers think and talk of one world community and one world religion, these two sects of a great religion should continue to fight over small differences in rituals over such a long time. Such disputes can and should be easily resolved by amicable settlement between the parties.”

Don't fight physically on the ground - MAV
Leader of the Prabhandham team for several decades at Thiruvallikeni and former HOD - Vaishnavism, Madras University MA Venkatakrishnan (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/05/ma-venkatakrishnan-thiruvallikeni-divya_16.html) told this writer on Friday evening that he does not endorse on the ground physical fights and abuses on this issue. “One should go the legal route to resolve this issue and not make a public scene on the ground allowing videos to go viral all over the world”, he said.

He reiterated the point he made to this writer earlier this month that instead of a legal recourse, the heads of the Thenkalai and Vadakalai Mutts should discuss and resolve this issue. The Mutt Chief should also restrain their disciples from abusive conduct on the ground in full public view.

MAV reminded this writer of the 1967 judgement and said nothing had changed in over 55 years and ‘we are still fighting over the same issues’

Mantra Pushpam Issue at Kanchipuram in the 1960s
Way back in the 1960s, the issue that came up before the Judge was about the duration and the tone of the Mantra Pushpam recital. The issue was brought to the attention of the court that when the Prabhandham recital was going on, the mantra pushpam kattiyam was being presented in a high tone and without a time restriction in a way to disturb the Thenkalai Adyapakas.

In that order in 1967, Judge Kamaluddin directed that the mantra pushpam service by its very nature should be restricted to a maximum of 15 minutes and the recital should take place in a low tone and pitch.

The current Brahmotsavam at the Varadaraja Perumal temple has seen another year without the presentation of the Nalayira Divya Prabhandham. But the fight between the two sects has continued on the ground like it did in the 1960s with each sect trying to showcase the wrongs of the other with the assistance of the modern gadgets by capturing the acts on the video (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/01/pazhaya-seevaram-battle-for-vaishnavite.html).

MAV concluded his conversation with this writer fearing that the impact of such public acts was likely to impact the two sects adversely in the long run.

Rajiv Lochan Sundaram Finance MD

In his three years at the helm of this NBFC, Rajiv has silenced his critics with an outstanding performance on all metrics achieving unprecedented growth momentum
Disbursements more than double, Profit up over 60%, Record Dividend, Stock at its all time high
Rajiv is a Professional you would like to be on your side - K. Balaji, Former MD, The Hindu
It was 2pm on Wednesday January 20, 2021. This writer the then PR for Sundaram Finance sent out a press release to announce the taking over of Rajiv Lochan as the MD of the company from April 1 that year. Most of the journalists were shocked – some said he would not last, a few asked if it was a 'April Fool' prank played on them (for he was to take over on April 1!!), others remarked that the staffers would have to gear up for a round of lay offs. A fortnight later, a journalist asked him on the face at the quarterly (Q3) presser held for the first time in the company’s history as to what experience he had to lead such a legendary company.

In that early phase, many journalists questioned his leadership qualities, only for this writer (the PR of the firm then) to challenge them that he would succeed beyond expectations and that most of them would have to eat their words. One Editor with great humility and professionalism said that if indeed he did, he would be happy to showcase the success (when it happened).

As luck would have it, Wave 2 of the Pandemic hit its peak soon after he took over as the MD and he was not able to meet his team members across the country for several months given the travel restrictions. He also lost his appa just ahead of his 80th birthday celebrations that Rajiv had planned for. His appa had been a  big guiding force in his life and his passing away all of a sudden was a big setback for him in that early phase as the MD. His phenomenal achievement over the last three years assumes even more significance against this backdrop.

Stand out personality even as a teenager
Even as a young boy and a student of PSBB Nungambakkam, Rajiv was unfazed with criticisms and largely ignored his batchmate friends at Singaram Street (T. Nagar), those that would often pull his legs and imitate his distinctive English slang. In those early years, he rode BSA Mach 1, a racing cycle. In the recent decade, he has taken a liking to the Bullet. He was a cut above the rest and stood out in the gang. Unlike many of those friends on that street, he did not take a liking to cricket and with his height preferred sports such as Basketball.

South Zone cricketer and classmate through the schooling days LU Arun (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/06/psbb-lu-arun-state-schools-south-zone.html) recalls Rajiv from those days in the 1980s "He was a brilliant student and a true all rounder -  Good in studies, played Basketball well, was terrific in debates and could deliver extempore speeches."
With LU Arun, his classmate at PSBB

But this was a large shoe to step into. TT Srinivasaraghavan (TTS) had taken the company on a steady growth path over the previous two decades and had earned the respect of the large team, nationally. Questions were being asked if he was good enough to take that chair.  However, he had the big backing of his Vice Chairman Harsha Viji, the grandson of the founder of the company. It was also Harsha who took on the journalist at the presser that afternoon when asked about the credentials of Rajiv to lead a NBFC.

The Most Academically Qualified MD in SF's history
This writer (the then PR for the company) had told the outgoing MD in that phase in 2021 that Rajiv was easily the most academically qualified professional in the history of the company with his engineering degree at IIT, and the MS and MBA degrees from Prestigious Universities in the US.  But it was also a first for the company for in his time TTS had repeatedly spoken to journalists in his interactions as to how historically the leaders in this company did not have fancy overseas degrees and certificates and grew the business by 'wetting their feet' engaging closely with customers in remote locations. In a completely different context, Rajiv had told this writer during that one year period that there is always a first in life.

He certainly did not have on the ground experience in the NBFC sector though he had been a  consultant in the financial sector for a few years and had also had a consulting engagement with SF. His appointment was indeed a first of its kind at SF.

But this was a phase when the next gen in the family Harsha Viji, who was taking over as the Executive Vice Chairman, made a bold move to appoint a leader with no hands on experience in the NBFC space and interestingly against the historic precedence in the company picking someone with overseas degrees and Big Five Consulting experience!!! Harsha knew Rajiv inside out having worked with him in the US and believed that he had it in him to take over the reigns from TTS (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/08/tt-srinivasaraghavan-tts-sundaram.html) and to take this company into the next phase of growth.

As a person, Rajiv has always had great respect for elders and tradition and now sports the sacred ash, something both he and the boys his age were shy to wear in the 1980s.  He also places a premium on values and those at SF are also close to his heart. When one of the senior staffers at The Hindu came to him to bid goodbye after his retirement, Rajiv fell at his feet seeking his blessings.

The Hindu Experience
Rajiv valued every firm he worked for. He was the first non family member to be inducted into The Hindu Board. Prior to that, he had stints at McKinsey, American Express and US Airways after having started off as a summer intern at the World Bank. In his early media interactions in 2021-22, he stressed on how blessed he was to have worked for firms with great history and now this NBFC, one of the oldest and certainly the most respected in the country.

Early into his stint, he told Raghuvir Srinivasan, Business Line's Editor in an interaction on his experience at The Hindu "It was very enriching and my most character building experience was there. It prepared me for life. It taught me the importance of having the trust of the target audience. Imagine sending the paper by an aircraft to reach it on time to your readers. It takes hell of a lot of effort to keep your readers. The importance of the employee connect and them being the most precious resource was a big learning. The art of motivating people, treating them the right way was a massive learning and the constant quest to keep improving."

"The Hindu was the first on many things. Similarly SF has been the first on many things (EMI was first introduced by SF, Credit scores/ assessment was first done by SF). There are a number of commonalities with Sundaram Finance. There is always a quest for the next new innovation difference that we can make. The mindset of doing things that would outlive one. Then there is the philosophy of ensuring that everything is for the customer and for the long haul", he told BL in September 2021.

A Balanced Approach grounded in reality
TN Ranji cricketer from the 1970s and former MD of The Hindu K Balaji (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/09/a-blossoming-cricket-career-was-cut.html) has known Rajiv for almost a decade and a half having also watched him from close quarters during the latter's stint as the MD of The Hindu through the middle of the last decade.
Balaji says that Rajiv has a sharp intellect and a capacity to understand the nuances of any proposition quite quickly. "He brings to bear a balanced approach to work and life that is grounded in reality. He speaks and acts with a strong conviction but is ready to listen to the other point of view. Rajiv's work ethic and value system are qualities that I am able to relate to very well. He is a professional you would like to be on your side", Balaji told this writer on Sunday evening.

Straight Forward and a Disciplined Leader
"He was a nice, straight forward person, who was very vocal in his views"says Arun, who worked at Infosys for over two decades, recalling Rajiv from the 1980s. Rajiv has remained so into his Sundaram Finance days. He has not held back from expressing his views on topics that are close to his heart. He is on your face and blunt with his feedback as most of his team members would have found out by now but he is also a very honest and friendly man.

There is also a certain discipline about him and the way he goes about his work, a characteristic that his school mate and now a successful global entrepreneur Promodh Sharma (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/05/promodh-sharma-cricketer-turned.html) distinctly remembers as a distinguishing feature of Rajiv's childhood and a reason for his outstanding success "He was an ardent NCC Cadet and a leader there. He was very disciplined and well regarded among his mates, features that led him to gaining acceptance as a Sergeant."

Pacing up the Disbursements Growth
During the first year of his stint as the MD, Rajiv repeatedly spoke about taking the company into a faster pace of growth and a trajectory of  at least 18% from the 12% or so that had existed previously. He was tech savvy and saw data analytics as an important factor in identifying growth opportunities for the business.

Strengthening and Expanding non South markets
TTS had laid a strong foundation during his stint expanding the company North of the Vindhyas. In 2005, he had (in)famously shot back at a journalist who asked as to why the company continued to remain South based ‘If having a branch 50 kms off the Pak border is South based, then so be it’, he retorted in his typical style.

Rajiv has consciously focused on markets outside of the South, and the contribution especially from the North and West has gone up during the last three years (the last story that this writer did as the PR for the company was one of him pushing the pedal on the non South markets and getting the disbursements up in those regions).
May 30, 2022

Unprecedented Growth
The company annual results for FY24 were out on Friday and Rajiv’s three year performance has been outstanding. From just over Rs. 800crores, the net profit has shot up to Rs. 1454crores (Rs. 1334cr without exceptional profit), a significant jump indeed. The receivables under management has gone up almost 50% from just over Rs. 35000cr to over 51000cr. AUM has touched almost Rs. 44000cr, again registering a strong growth from 2021(just over Rs. 30000cr).

Disbursements, which has always been a key metric, has grown leaps and bounds in his tenure to over Rs. 26000cr from around Rs. 11000cr at the time he took over. During the one year that this writer engaged with him as the PR, Rajiv repeatedly spoke about gaining market share as one of his prime objectives. And he has done that remarkably well increasing the market share in all the asset classes. From an investor’s point of view, the dividend percentage has shot up in the last couple of years as has the stock price which has more than doubled taking it new highs.

Interestingly, the staff count has gone up to over 7000 much against the predictions of his sceptics.
Not many would have given him a chance to take Sundaram Finance on such an unprecedented growth path having also taking over at the peak of the Pandemic (Wave 2) when everything seemed to be working against you but Rajiv is a silent achiever and has always been one. He has scored extraordinarily on almost all counts during these three years. He is a hard task master and high on technology as his team mates would have come to know by now but that is to be expected of one who has always raised the bar in his life right from his schooling days. It has been a great journey for him from being a Consultant in a big five firm (he was one of the founding members of McKinsey's Chennai Practice) to being a hugely successful leader at this legendary NBFC.

In this short period of three years, he has catapulted this traditional and historically cautious firm into new highs on every front.  In his first year as the MD, he spoke about the company @ 75 and what he needs to plan and do on different fronts ahead of that big year that will come up at the end of the decade.  He is an ambitious man and it is likely that he would have set his sights far and high for that milestone year. And knowing him, he will do everything within his fold to  take Sundaram Finance on a strong growth path leading to the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.

(This writer handled the PR for Sundaram Finance for two decades from the early 2000s including for a year after Rajiv took over as the MD)

Therazhundur Aamaruviappan Brahmotsavam 2024

Vasan Bhattar anchors a revival of the Brahmotsavam to its historical grandeur
Vennaithaazhi and the Chariot Procession as praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar take place with great devotee interest
'Voyali on Wheels' as part of the Horse Vahana Procession is a new trend

It is a hot summer's day in May and the revered Vasan Bhattar is seen with a turban on his head as sweat beats down on his body in the sweltering heat during the Chariot Procession. He has at his outstanding best once again with his leadership and people management skills coming to the fore at the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at the Devathirajan Divya Divya in Therazhundur.

Way back in 2008, this temple was in a bad shape. The physical infrastructure was in a dilapidated state. It was a phase when the temple did not have money to pay even the electricity charges and the connection was even disconnected for this reason. Vasan Bhattar had an internal drive to revive the fortunes of the temple. In the 1980s, his appa, Kannan Bhattar, who passed away a few years ago, asked him to take care of the temple and took a promise that he would perform Kainkaryam with sincerity and devotion and without financial returns in mind. That early phase in the 80s and 90s were challenging for Vasan Bhattar but he was determined to around the fortunes of the temple at the turn of the century.

He began training and mentoring teenagers Venkatesh Bhattar of Thiru Cherai (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/08/thiru-cherai-venkatesh-bhattar-next-gen.html) and Srikanthan Bhattar of Sirupuliyur in addition to his son Hari Sundara Bhattar. The three of them have turned out to be outstanding students and have developed into specialists in specific areas in the temple space.

On Wednesday morning, standing in front of the Chariot, Vasan Bhattar told this writer that Srikanthan Bhattar has turned out into an alankaram specialist “I initiated him into alankarams and found him to be taking great interest in decorating the Perumal. Throughout this Brahmotsavam, he does the decoration of the Utsavar and each of the Thiru Kolams that one sees through the Utsavam is Srikanth’s work.”

Venkatesh Bhattar has turned into a Thiru Aradhanam and Homam specialist. Through the seven hours of the Chariot procession on Wednesday on the 9th day of the Utsavam, he was atop the Chariot performing archanai for devotees. Venkatesh Bhattar has been the right hand man for Vasan Bhattar for many years and has been a pillar of strength at all utsavams at Therazhundur.

Hari Sundar, who learned the agamas at Velukkudi Krishnan’s Patshala in Srirangam, is a specialist in Thirumanjanam and Samprokshanams. Every year, Vasan Bhattar performs consecration in at least 10 temples jointly with these three mentee priests.
These three were not the only support personnel for Vasan Bhattar. He roped in his 83 year father in law, Lakshmana Dikshithar, from Mannargudi to take care of the darshan at the Moolavar Sannidhi. With ‘Babu Dikshithar' as he is popularly known in the temple circles at the Sannidhi both in the morning and evening, Vasan Bhattar has been able to focus on the strenuous Brahmotsavam and all the challenges that come along with it.

On Wednesday morning for example, the optic fibre overhead wire on the East Street was not cut until 945am, a full 45minutes after the Chariot began its procession. Despite the presence of HRCE authorities and local politicians, it finally needed phone calls from Vasan Bhattar to get the desired result and for the Chariot to move on.

Srikanthan Bhattar and the Vennaithaazhi Alankaram
Its well past midnight on Monday. Soon after Devathirajan returned from the evening procession, Srikanthan Bhattar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2019/08/sirupuliyur-divya-desam.html) began a night long alankaram of the Lord that is one of the highlights of the festival.
Srikanthan Bhattar told this writer on Tuesday morning even as scores of devotees looked in awe at the beautiful Vennaithaazhi alankaram that he owes it to Vasan Bhattar for mentoring him and giving him opportunities to decorate the Lord “With repeated presentations year after year, I have begun to like performing the various alankarams. Vasan Bhattar has reposed complete faith in me to decorate Aamaruviappan each day of this utsavam and I feel blessed to be the one assigned with this opportunity every year now for many years.”

Early in the morning, the one legged Srikanthan Bhattar heads back in his special TVS Scooty (presented to him last year by a Chennai based devotee) to Sirupuliyur to perform his daily archaka Kainkaryam at the Kripasamudram Divya Desam and he comes back after his service there for the late night alankaram.

Vasan Bhattar’s elder brother and Pancharathra expert Raman Bhattar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/08/pancharatra-agama-temple-administration.html) too made his way to the Utsavam on this 8th day and he was there through the Chariot Procession as well. So too was his son Balaji, a Robotic expert, who performs Kainkaryam at the Utsavams at Therazhundur, Thiru Cherai and Thiru Nagai outside of his professional work.

Vasan Bhattar’s 2nd son has joined a global IT firm in a WFH model. He too performed Kainkaryam at this utsavam being part of the procession.

8th Morning of the Brahmotsavam- The Lord with the Butter
It is just past 6am on Tuesday as Aamaruviappan makes his way from the temple displaying his Vennaithaazhi alankaram. At every house on the north side of the temple tank, devotees present butter in good quantity and each of them just cannot away their eyes of the Lord

At the Thiru Mangai Azhvaar Sannidhi on the Sannidhi Street, the Prabhandham members begin the presentation of Therazhundur Paasuram of Thiru Mangai Azhvaar’s Thirumozhi. On this 8th day of the utsavam, it is customary for the Ghosti to begin with the verses on Therazhundur. The members are also presented with a brand new book comprising the verses of Desikar Prabhandham.

Through the three hour procession, devotees welcome Aamaruviappan at the entrance of their homes with butter.

Differences within Vadakalai Prabhandham members
A sour event of this morning’s procession was the difference of opinion within the Prabhandham members half way into the North Street. Only last week, this writer had featured a story on the ugly fight between Thenkalayars and Vadakalaiyars at the Brahmotsavam in Kanchipuram (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2024/05/kanchi-varadar-brahmotsavam-thenkalai.html). Just after 8am, one set of Vadakalai Prabhandham members wanted to take a detour to the newly built Andavan Ashram off the North street while another set of Vadakalai members refused to join and continued with their recital on the North street!!! The members who went to the Andavan Ashram stopped their recital and joined the other group a little later. Of course, Perumal did not make it to the new Ashram and he continued on his procession along the North Street.
Vasan Bhattar told this writer on Wednesday morning that he was not for any innovations during procession and HRCE’s instructions to him has been that no new routes should be added to the procession.

It is the day of the utsavam when Aamaruviappan stays at the Ahobila Mutt through the day after the morning procession. Just past 11am, a Thirumanjanam was performed.

Horse Vahana - A Distinctive Posture
Late on Tuesday afternoon, Srikanthan Bhattar was back at the Mutt for the Raja Alankaram atop the Golden Horse Vahana. A distinctive feature of the alankaram is that Perumal is seen facing the devotees to the right of the horse as against the horse vahana processions in non chola regions where Perumal is facing forward in line with the horse.
Hari Sundar Bhattar who was the archaka on this late night procession told this writer that in the padippu that takes place on the last day of the utsavam, the Lord is described as providing darshan solely for the devotees and that he wants them to have a full display of his alankaram. This is the reason Hari Sundar Bhattar says that Aamaruviappan has historically been facing the direction of the devotees during this Horse Vahana procession.

Tradition continues
Another historic tradition in remote villages continues to this day in Therazhundur. It is Tuesday and the day of the weekly Santhai. It is almost 9.30pm as Aamaruviappan majestically strolls around on to the South Street, those in several hundreds from the Vibrant Santhai have darshan. The wholesale market is abuzz and business is at its peak as the Lord makes his way past this business center on Tuesday night.

Voyali on Wheels!!!
Just after 9pm, a very interesting event took place at the East end of the Sannidhi street. Voyali on the Horse Vahana evening is popular across Divya Desams. Of course, in remote temples in Tamil Nadu, Perumal has over the last decade been carried on wheels during the street processions. But this one was indeed different. The Sripatham performed real fast paced Voyali on Wheels!!! After Perumal had been mounted on to the wheels and following the Prabhandham presentation of Thiru Mangai Azhvaar’s first set of verses of the Periya Thirumozhi, the Sripatham made three fast paced 200 meter laps back and forth from the Ahobila Mutt to near the Ther. It was a stunning exhibition of Voyali on Wheels that left Vasan Bhattar holding his breath for the Sannidhi Street is still a mud road!!!

The Prabhandham Ghosti move far too ahead
The Prabhandham members gather from different parts of the state for this utsavam and hence are not regulars at the temple through the year. Given this background, they went on to the North street during the Horse Vahana Procession even while Perumal was still in the South Street!!! Even right at the end, they had made their way back to the temple completing the Thirumozhi verses when Devathirajan had not yet turned on to the Sannidhi Street near the Ther. Throughout the morning and evening procession, there were those leading the recital, then a few of them behind leaving a gap of a few yards and then another third set of members even farther behind and constantly talking amongst themselves leading to no sync between the lead group and those far behind - such was the devotion of this Prabhandham group on the two street processions on the eighth day!!!

Interestingly, given their diverse backgrounds and joining together just for this utsavam, it was left to Vasan Bhattar to remind the Prabhandham members at the start of the Horse Vahana Procession that following the Vadinen Verses, they had to continue the Thirumozhi verses from where they had left off in the morning (i.e after the Thiru Kurungudi Paasuram)!!!

Past midnight - Raja Alankaram for the Chariot Procession
It was well past 11pm when Devathirajan made his way back to the temple on the Horse Vahana.  There were just a few hours to go before he was to make his way to the Chariot. After Venkatesh Bhattar dismantled the Lord from the Horse Vahana, Srikanthan Bhattar got to the Raja Alankaram well past midnight on Tuesday.
After just an hour’s sleep, Vasan Bhattar is back at the temple at 3.30am on Wednesday ahead of the Chariot procession. He has got such a well oiled machine running in this Divya Desam that every Kainkaryapara is on time including the Sripatham personnel, the nagaswaram troupe and the Theevatti.

Sharp at 5am, Aamaruviappan makes a majestic march to the Chariot led in the front by the Prabhandham members reciting the Madal. At 5.45am, the Chariot takes a symbolic step forward before retiring for a few hours. Soon after, the Prabhandham members complete their presentation of Thiru Kurunthandagam and Thiru Nedunthandagam and Vasan Bhattar calls for Satru Murai. He had told this writer last year that the Chariot procession signifies the completion of their presentation and the final set of Tiruvoimozhi verses later in the evening is presented by his team as the Prabhandham members would have moved on by then.
      Srikanthan and Vasan Bhattar

A century ago, people from 18 villages around Therazhundur landed up in the town on the day of the Chariot Festival to pull the Chariot along the four big streets during the Brahmotsavam to the beating of drums and the blowing of trumpets. It was a grand affair similar to the one narrated by Thirumangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi.

70 Year old TK Kannan who is now into farming and has been residing at the North end of the West street recalls his appa telling him that there were years when the Chariot would take four days to complete its procession “It was all muddy streets full of pits and holes. The Chariot would get stuck at many places during the procession. And would remain there through the night with the archaka standing guard. People came in from Melaiyur, Raghupathy Kattalam, Sennai Nallur And Thozhalakudi for the Chariot Festival. One person from every household was assigned to participate in the festival and each to make some contribution in terms of service during this festival. We used to be paid half a rupee for Sripatham service and were also provided sacred prasadam.”
He is happy that those days are behind us and that the Lord makes his in 4-5 hours around the four streets. Kannan has nostalgic memories of the good old days “The Sannidhi street was vibrant with 100s of Vaishnavite family. The North Street too was full of the traditional families who performed Kainkaryam at the temple. However, in both these streets, this has come down to about two families for all the traditionalists sold their homes and went away to bigger cities in search of jobs. It is only now that they are wanting to make a comeback.”

The Popularity of the Chariot Festival
Even a 1000 years ago, the Chariot Festival was popular at Therazhundur. Thirumangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi says that big dust rose from the movement of the chariot along the wide streets of Therazhundur. The women were all excited as they lined up the porticos of their homes to watch the Lord in procession. They even used the smoke as perfume for their body.

To invoke the blessings of the Lord for good rain ahead of the monsoon season, young Vedic Seers were seen performing fire sacrifices three times a day. It seemed as if the smoke from the fire sacrifice clouded the high sky. There was non-stop chanting of the Tamil and Sanskrit works by these Vedic Scholars. The conch blew on auspicious occasions almost as an alert to the devotees.

Vasan Bhattar told this writer that the EB folks had to disconnect the line across the four streets before the Chariot could start on its full procession and that the usual time from the East street was around 9am. In yet another new development, the Chariot was pulled out on to the East Street by two tractors.
However, on this Wednesday morning, after the EB personnel had cut off the lines, everyone found to their dismay that the fibre optic cable was hanging overhead at two points on the East Street. It was 9.45am when these two cables were brought down for the procession to continue. It was a hot and sultry day but the devotees had gathered in several hundreds to pull the chariot with great devotion. On the South street, the Chariot got locked into the Electricity post and the EB personnel had to intervene once again. It was past 11am when Devathirajan made his way on to the Mela Veethi.

After almost a seven hour procession, he came back to the Sannidhi Street well past 4pm on Wednesday. It was a long day for the devotees but all of them found great joy in pulling Aamaruviappan around the four streets.
     Vasan and Venkatesh Bhattar

For Vasan Bhattar and his team, it was great relief that the challenging Chariot Procession had been completed without too many scars though it took longer than expected today. For several decades till the start of this century, the big Chariot hadn’t run. The restoration of the Chariot was anchored by Vasan Bhattar and this has now become one of the popular days in the year with people all the nearby villages joining in large numbers to show their devotion.
It has been a great turnaround at this Divya Desam, one that has been fashioned completely by Vasan Bhattar with the help of his mentees. Vasan Bhattar reminds this writer that those like Venkatesh Bhattar and Srikanthan Bhattar are not paid any Sambhavanai for their Kainkaryam through the ten days of the utsavam, such is their devotional commitment to the Lord of Therazhundur.

Over two decades ago, it was this writer (the PR for Quintant/ iGATE for over a decade) who woke up Phaneesh Murthy at 3am US time with a call to alert him about the court case and a presser announced by Infosys the next day following his exit. That night he was unfazed on being told about the upcoming event and has always been cheerful in his conversations and positive in his outlook to life. He has had multiple setbacks in his life each of which coming at a time when he was at his prime in his corporate career. At Infosys, he was the 'Golden Boy' and a favourite of Narayana Murthy having taken the company global and was the one instrumental in building the Infy Brand. At the turn of the century, he was touted to become the next CEO but he had to face a sudden exit. He took over as the CEO when iGATE was in a mess and achieved his revenue target of $1billion. But at both these companies he had to face exits at inopportune times. This writer had worked very closely with Phaneesh for well over a decade and was surprised with the positivity he brought to himself and to those around him even at a time when most others would have been crestfallen. So was he shaken by the turn of events in his life and how did he handle all the challenges in his life and how has he continued to remain so positive about life despite all that it has handed him. Phaneesh Murthy looks back at his life in a long conversation with this writer on this last day of May.

This story follows the one written on Phaneesh in January this year.

Rattled at the Infy Exit
Phaneesh was on a roll and a glorious growth path beckoned him at Infosys when he exited the firm. So was he rattled in that phase and how did he manage to come out of the shock “It is difficult to say that I was not rattled. The news came as a huge shock to me.  I was quite rattled, really.  But I had the inner strength to face it for I knew that what someone was accusing me of was completely false. When you have that confidence that you are intrinsically good and you know injustice has been done, you will be able to make a strong comeback. You can feel outraged as you knew a lie was being spread around but I had an inner calm. There were many who stood by me in that phase including the family and friends. While I appreciated all of that and it meant a lot at that time, finally the strength had to come from within. Without that inner strength, I could not have survived”, he told this writer as the clock ticked past 10pm.

One needs to be optimistic about life and its offerings
He says that he is an eternal optimist. "When you are falling off the 60th floor and 59 floors have passed, I still say ‘so far so good’. In the 1990s, I worked as hard as anyone in the company. My belief is that hard work and smart work will pay off in life. That is the belief I have grown up with.”

To start off a new business in that scenario of what was happening around him was very demanding. To put that behind and to go forward with confidence needs great strength. Phaneesh always saw what was ahead "I perpetually live in the future. You think of what can be and not what could have been. Yes, the Infy exit was disappointing but I have not spent time and energy pondering over it in the last two decades or so.”

He would have been on top of the World had he become the CEO of Infosys and could have been there for many years but Phaneesh says that iGATE was an altogether different experience and something that he enjoyed greatly “When I came in as the CEO, iGATE was in a mess on all fronts - organisation, markets and the services. There had been multiple CEOs in the previous years and I was shocked to see that most of the employees believed that I too would be another one in that list of outgoing CEOs.”

“Solving a mess is an Engineer’s and a Business Man’s dream. iGATE was an enriching experience and very high in terms of learning. While I had a fantastic time at Infy in the 1990s, iGATE was even better for I played a transformational role and turned around the company far beyond anyone’s expectations” says Phaneesh.

He has a profound view on where life takes you “Somethings go your way and some don’t. You strike some deals by sheer luck. At iGATE, I wanted to buy Satyam but that didn’t go my way. My core strength was marketing and customers but this was all legal (with all the problems there) and I was unprepared for it. When I pitched for Patni much later, I was much better prepared.”

Impact of the External Noise?
How much did the negative noise from some of the senior management folks at Infy impact him in that early phase soon after his exit. It must have been tough to hear not so sweet words from those with whom he had worked closely over the previous years “The reality is I cannot control others – both what they think about me and what they say about me. I simply moved on in that phase and made peace with myself. I have always reminded myself of the famous saying in the Christian Wedding – 'Speak Now or hold that forever'. I have never had regrets at the way it was handled at Infosys and have never looked back with the slightest tinge of negativity at any point of time over the last two decades.”

How people change - Life is all about 'context'
But how were the initial months after the exit from Infosys after having been the blue eyed boy of Narayana Murthy “I was in shock at that time for it was the first time I had to encounter such a case. And I knew there was no truth to it. For them too, it was probably the first time they had faced such a scenario. We were not in a good decision-making mindset at that time. I was down for 3-4 months, but I also realised that everything in life is within a context. The clients respect you for the value proposition and the employees respect you for the growth opportunities you provide them. If you remove the context, you will see how differently they behave. What did hurt me a lot in that phase was the fact that all those who used to come home in the US and have dinner and understood me well were comfortable with the decision taken (by the company) at that time. Most of them said that they had no options but I believed that there could have been different outcomes.”

From MES to IIM - views about him changed!!!
“I was the same guy when I was at the MES college in Bangalore but when I moved to IIT Madras, many more became my friends. And even more after I joined IIM A. They suddenly believed that I could solve World’s hunger and poverty!!! Without that label, I would have been the same person but people see it very differently.”

Bums on Seat to iTOPS - he was preaching against what he had propagated
So what was this new thing about iTOPS that he wanted to create at iGATE having pitched for a decade with the customers of Infy with the rate per hour and bums on seat model. How did his view change so suddenly that throughout the stint at iGATE, it was all about the Output based model “In my mind, right from the beginning and forever, I worked hard to create a differentiator. It was the reason why I insisted on building a brand at Infosys. The iTOPS differentiator was a natural evolution of my ongoing interactions with customers. Many of the things they liked at Infy but the one thing they didn’t and that was often brought out in my conversations was the fact that the company put juniors on the job, they took longer to do the job. These conversations led me to thinking about a solution.”
When you go to a car mechanic, would you be happy if he said he would charge a per hour fee to identify the problem and then a per hour rate to find the solution or would you want to know the approximate cost for getting the car back on its wheels. Why is it that in an organisation alone there isn’t a change possible. I wanted to show that organisations need to change and that they need to charge for outcome and not just the efforts.”

Narayana Murthy's iTOPS advise to Phaneesh in 2004
Phaneesh is happy and grateful that the other Murthy opened his eyes to a tweaking of this model and approach “Narayana Murthy met me in 2004 as he was curious to know about the iTOPS model that everyone was talking about at that time. He said there was so much noise around it. After listening to me, he asked me to simplify it. He told me that I was falling into a typical trap that the smartest people get into. The fact that you understand this concept does not necessarily mean that everyone else will, as easily as you. And don't assume that they will be as passionate as you are.”

Phaneesh did simplify his description of iTOPS and in the coming years was able to convince people that this was a model that would gain acceptance globally with the customers over a period of time "Overall I think it had become successful and a lot of what is done now is based on the output model. I tell the entrepreneurs of the companies that I am mentoring and consulting with that once they become passionate about a model, they should put all their efforts in that direction to make it successful. If I had continued at Infosys, it is likely I would have pitched that there as well.”

From a messy company to $1billion in revenues
After clearing the initial mess and having gained the confidence of the Board and his team members, Phaneesh Murthy had set his sights high on the $1billion revenue for iGATE. He achieved this with the acquisition of Patni, India’s oldest IT company. So what was next in sight for him at iGATE and did he expect to continue in that firm even as he turned 50!!!

“Yes, I expected to take iGATE into the next phase of growth. I was looking to double the revenues to $2b in the next 3-4 years and was confident of achieving that. We had increased the EBIDTA by over 35% in the previous 18 months. I was gearing up for my next phase at iGATE when I was called in for a meeting one morning by the two founders along with a couple of directors. They had come to a certain conclusion and it is usually difficult to change a human mind when it has already made its conclusion. Hence I let it go and was out of that meeting in just 5 minutes!!!!”

Infosys was a big shock for he was cut out in the middle of a glorious growth path. At iGATE, he had achieved a lot including taking it past the $1b mark.  But Phaneesh was moving into a new phase in life and though he did not see this coming, the iGATE exit did not impact him as much as the one over a decade earlier “I was older, at 50, and financially a lot more secure."

He knew inside him that his relationship with an iGATE staffer would backfire one day and would bounce back on him but he continued to see the positive side of it. And he paid the price for it. He wanted to start a new life at that point of time but it did not finally materialise.

iGATE founders come back to Phaneesh after a decade!!!
Interestingly, the two founders, Sunil Wadhwani and Ashok Trivedi, for whom he had created such wealth at iGATE, have reached out to Phaneesh this year with a request to revive Mastek, a staffing firm that had been hived off from iGATE in 2008 and that is now in the same mess as iGATE had been in 2003-04. “What you did for us at iGATE two decades, we would like you do for Mastek”, the founders told Phaneesh.

This was yet another example, Phaneesh points out, of context in life. The same founders that wanted to see Phaneesh out were seeking his professional help again, almost forgetting the five minute meeting they had in the Board room!!!

Phaneesh is one who does not carry too much to heart and has accepted the offer and is now playing the role of consultant to Mastek in an effort to revive the firm that is absolutely low on revenue.

Wanted to reconnect with his two sons
Within two weeks of his iGATE exit, he revived Primentor, a consulting firm that he had founded after his Infy exit. In a month, he bagged his first client. There were multiple offers for the CEO role both from private and listed companies but it was a phase he wanted to reconnect with his two sons“For long, travel on work had come in the way of my relationship with my two kids and I did not spend enough time with them when they were growing up. I wanted to reconnect and better my relationship with them. Over the last decade, I have been able to do that and am at my closest with them now.”

The elder son is in an engineer role in a hot growing company while the younger one is an entrepreneur in the US. Would Phaneesh charge his son consulting for him. He is all smiles and says that he is delighted that his son has taken to entrepreneurship and is finding his feet in the corporate world.

Phaneesh in the 60s - For the Humanity
Phaneesh turned 60 year last year. So what’s in store this decade given that he does not want to be engaged in a full time role in a company as a CEO “I want to achieve as much as possible for humanity. I insist with the entrepreneurs that I consult with that the top 20 people should be given stocks that would make them millionaires and that 4-5% of the profits should go towards a charity of their choice.”

Phaneesh is not a big cricket buff but on the eve of the Indo Pak World Cup match he is organising a Charity Dinner with legends Zaheer Abbas and Sunil Gavaskar in New York. The funds raised there would go towards heart surgeries for kids (in India) with holes in their heart.

Phaneesh does not visit temples for he believes that God resides within. He says that the superior being is within and you need to connect with that inner self.  For decades, Phaneesh has been into at least one event every year that is out of his comfort zone. Bungee Jumping and Sky Jumping have probably given him a fearlessness to face all the challenges in life.

Feeling helpless in the corporate world
For all his inner strength and the way he has handled the challenges, did he ever crumble under the corporate pressure. His mind goes to a period just before his Infy exit “Following 9/11, there was a meltdown in the telecom sector. Telecom was a big segment for Infy. The markets were collapsing in front of my eyes and I just felt helpless. I was shaken out of bounds for I realised how quickly the world and the markets could change. The company had grown exponentially and for the first time in that phase it was registering slower growth. Customers had hit a wall.”

Phaneesh's exit soon after meant he could not see them through that phase.

The global financial crisis in 2008 was another phase that challenged him big time as a leader. iGATE had revived and was on a growth path when the global crisis hit the markets “I worked doubly hard for half the revenues. It was a crazy year at work and it showed the kind of unexpected things life could throw at you all of a sudden stumping all your great corporate strategies and five year plans.”

These were the only two events that caused a bit of stress but even these he says he handled with positivity “I had slogged both at Infosys and iGATE for I have enjoyed the challenges that life throws at you. Hard work and Smart work always bring results.

After over three decades, Phaneesh separated from his wife last year but he says they remain the best of friends.

Its well past 11pm in the night and his 10 year old daughter (through the former iGATE staffer - that relationship did not go through) is fast asleep by his side. Phaneesh has got into an informal understanding that the daughter would be with him for a certain period every month and he enjoys her company a great deal.

It is a phase when he is having his best engagement with his three kids. And that is currently providing him with the greatest joy.

Therazhundur Aamaruviappan Madapalli Raghu

Thittai Raghu has been a dependable cook at the Devathirajan Divya Desam in Therazhundur for over two decades and has committed himself to a lifetime service at this temple
This is a phase in TN temples where madapalli paricharakars are hard to find and those that do come act pricey. In many remote temples including Divya Desams, the priests double up as the madapalli cook as well. The Aamaruviappan temple in Therazhundur is an exception. Srinivasan Bhattar, who has played a major role of the revival of this Divya Desam over the last 15 years, has been blessed to have a dependable and traditional cook for well over two decades.

A relative of TS Rajagopalan Iyengar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/06/tsr-co-legendary-enterpreneur_19.html), the founder of TSR & Co, Thittai Aravamudhan Srinivasan completed his graduation at the National College Trichy having schooled at the Boys High School, Srirangam. As a water proof technician, he went across the country including to Bombay and Orissa carrying out this professional work for a decade till the late 1990s.

His appa had been in the military and participated in the second world war and later worked in the Railways. Even as a child, Madapalli Raghu, as he is now popularly known in the temple circles, was interested in cooking.
A threatening injury arising out of a fall led him to quitting the job and he decided to spend the rest of his life performing service to a Divya Desam Lord. His aunt resided in Therazhundur and he moved here.

For over two decades, his service at the madapalli has been of immense value to Vasan Bhattar for he has been to focus on archaka service and Thiru Aradhana instead of doubling up as a cook like the priests in many other Divya Desams.

Venkatesh Bhattar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/08/thiru-cherai-venkatesh-bhattar-next-gen.html) who performs archaka service at Saranatha Perumal temple in Thiru Cherai has been experiencing challenges at the madapalli there over the last decade. He told this writer during the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at Therazhundur that for a long time the priests at the Divya Desam in Thiru Cherai had to double up as the cook at the madapalli leading to extended hours of service. It is only recently that the cook who has been appointed by Venu Srinivasan of TVS (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2020/07/venu-srinivasan-historical-temples.html) to perform service at the Srinivasa Perumal temple in Kudavasal has agreed to make the sacred food early in the morning and evening at Thiru Cherai ahead of his daily duty at the Kudavasal temple (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2009/12/kudavasal-srinivasa-perumal.html).

58 year old Raghu is bubbling with energy and the big utsavams like the ten day Brahmotsavam excite him no end. Ahead of the Chariot Festival, he was at the madapalli at 1am this Wednesday to make Chakkarai Pongal Thaligai for the early morning Vishroopam followed by the 5am procession to the Chariot. During Margazhi, he is at the madapalli every morning at 2am through each day of the month. Through the year, he makes food specific to the occasion like for example Upma on Ekadasi. Every evening, he makes Dosai, Vadai and Sundal much to the delight of the devotees who are happy that regular prasadam is being presented to Perumal every day of the year at this remote location.

Lifetime commitment to Aamaruviappan
Given the tough working conditions, his relatives have been pitching with him to quit this service as he also does not take a salary from the HR&CE and performs this purely as a Kainkaryam. He manages to run his life based on the Thaligai Sambhavanai he gets from the devotees for making the sacred food and he is more than happy with that. And he has kept his relatives at bay.

“While I worked hard and earned a lot of money as a technician in the corporate world, the joy of preparing food for a Divya Desam Perumal is unmatched. The love and care of Vasan Bhattar as well as the happiness I find on the faces of the devotees when they taste the prasadam has kept me going here. This is where I intend to spend the rest of my life serving at the feet of Devathirajan and under the care of Vasan Bhattar and now his son Hari Sundar”, says Raghu, with a big smile.
Vasan Bhattar - in the hot sun on the Chariot day this week

Vasan Bhattar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/09/therazhundur-vasan-bhattar.html) is delighted with the service that Raghu has rendered over the last two decades “My madapalli has been in safe hands for Raghu is very dependable and gets the sacred food ready ahead of time at all utsavams. This has taken away a lot of the anxiety relating to Thaligai away from my thoughts and I have been able to focus on my Kainkaryam.”

Those who perform kainkaryam with commitment and devotion will be forever blessed is what Kannan Bhattar told Vasan Bhattar in the 1980s when his son took charge of archaka service. It is that sincerity of service that has handed Raghu as that dependable cook to this historical Divya Desam, praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar.
Not in too many remote Divya Desams do you hear of a madapalli paricharakar who has been in service for over two decades. The Aamaruviappan temple in Therazhundur is an exception on many fronts and the Madapalli Kainkaryam is another service at this Divya Desam that has bucked the recent trend of archakas frantically searching for that elusive cook.

Raghu has been a great asset to this temple and his commitment to perform lifelong service gives great confidence to Vasan Bhattar that one important daily Kainkaryam is in safe and responsible hands.

Kudos to Madapalli Raghu for this  Kainkaryam.

Thiru Velliyankudi Brahmotsavam Revival Garuda Sevai 2024

Ramamoorthy Bhattachar and two devotees play a big role in the revival of Brahmotsavam after over half a century
The Garuda Sevai alankaram turns out to be a big hit as Kola Villi Ramar strode out majestically on to the four big streets with glittering jewellery and huge flower garlands on Tuesday evening
In September 2021, shortly after the second wave of the Pandemic, this section had featured a story on the possible revival of the Brahmotsavam at the Kola Villi Ramar temple in Thiru Velliyankudi, one praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi verses.  On Tuesday evening, the Garuda Seva procession around the four big streets provided a glimpse of what the revival of the Brahmotsavam meant for the local residents. Two devotees, Uppili and Sriram, whose ancestors lived in this historical Divya Desam along with the Chief Priest Ramamoorthy Bhattar have played a big role in the revival of this annual utsavam in Vaikasi and to helping this temple return to its old glory.

Thiru Mangai Azhvaar begins his praise of Thiru Velliyankudi describing its location as being south of the Manni River (Cauvery) with one hearing the loud noise of the river flowing through in full force.

Two Devotees and Chief Priest anchor the Revival
Just under a decade ago, this writer had featured a story in The Hindu Friday Review on the restoration exercise at Thiru Velliyankudi and the temple wearing a fresh look. Sriram, a resident of West Mambalam and now a staffer at the IT division of StanChart, played an important role in that restoration closely monitoring the repair works and also identifying the donors for the renovation works.
                Devotee Sriram

Way back in September 2017, this section had featured a story wondering if like minded devotees would come together to revive the traditional utsavams including the Brahmotsavam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/09/velliyankudi-sukra-sthalam.html). And it has been through the devotees and the priest that the utsavams are being revived now.

Similar to his role in the physical infrastructure restoration exercise last decade, Sriram has once again played a role in the revival of the Brahmotsavam along with another devotee, Uppili, both of whose roots belong to Thiru Velliyankudi. While the Brahmotsavam was revived last year after well over half a century, the vahanas were sourced from the perumal temple in Senganoor, the birth place of Vaishnavite Acharya Periya Vachan Pillai (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/09/periya-vachan-pillai-senganoor.html).
Over the last 12 months, the two have worked together to get new vahanas organised for this Divya Desam and thus this week the processions are taking place in vahanas belonging to this temple. Sriram told this writer on Tuesday that only the Garuda and Hanumantha Vahana were in good shape in the temple previously “All other vahanas have been newly done over the last 12 months. We are happy that we now have all the vahanas of our own for the annual Brahmotsavam processions.”

He also told this writer that Andavan Ashram has bought 5 pieces of lands East of the temple and construction could begin sometime in the future.

Uppili had been caught up in corporate work around the previous consecration in the middle of the previous decade and hence Sriram had taken the lead role in the renovation work. But with Uppili now residing in Kumbakonam, he has been instrumental in engaging closely with the requirements of the temple and getting the vahanas ready ahead of this utsavam. He has been involved in the process of organising the Prabhandham Ghosti members, the Thathiyaradhanai and taking care of other minute details relating to the Brahmotsavam as he is now located within 15kms of the temple.
                     Devotee Uppili

A Grand Garuda Sevai Alankaram
It is just past 3pm on Tuesday and Gopinathan Bhattachar from Nachiyar Koil Divya Desam in Thiru Naraiyur(https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/08/nachiyar-koil-gopi-bhattar.html), who has just finished a big Moolavar Thirumanjanam for Srinivasa Perumal,  arrives in Thiru Velliyankudi in his car. He has been roped in by Ramamoorthy Bhattachar for the Garuda Sevai alankaram. He told this writer on Tuesday evening that Nachiyar Koil is now renowned for the Kal Garuda Sevai and hence he thought it fit that with his experience of Garuda Vahana alankaram, Gopi Bhattar would do a good job and delight the devotees. Indeed he did with support from a few young Kainkaryapakas including a Student at Tirupathi and one from Nandipura Vinnagaram Divya Desam.
Ramamoorthy Bhattar- The Priest behind the Revival

Devotees delighted with Brahmotsavam revival
Well past 8pm, a devotee lady who walked along with Kola Villi Ramar through the entire procession asked as to who decorated the Perumal as she was delighted with the minute attention paid to alankaram. On getting to hear as to who had performed the decoration, she pointed out that the left leg of Perumal was on top of the Garuda while the right leg was placed near the right ear of Garuda and said that it was no surprise then that Perumal looked so beautiful atop the Garuda Vahana. The jewels were glittering, the colourful silk vastrams caught the fancy of the devotees and they simply could not take their eyes away from the Lord.
Thirumangai Azhvaar refers to the huge mansions at Thiru Velliyankudi. The pillars were studded with glittering gems so much so that it was even difficult to make out if it was day or night!!!

Another local resident and a devotee who was present last year at the Garuda Sevai found some thing different this year. The Bhattar, of Senganoor Perumal temple, who is here through the utsavam told him that it was the size and quantity of the garland “This year, Perumal has been decked with 11 huge flower garlands and that is what has made him look even more attractive.”

Fire crackers and rockets were burst through the entire stretch of the procession that went past 9pm. Residents of Thiru Velliyankudi decked the streets with beautiful white pulli kolam and presented coconuts and flowers to Perumal as he made his way around the four streets.
The Prabhandham Ghosti, that had presented the sacred verses of Andal in the pallakku procession on Tuesday morning, now presented Naanmugan Thiruvanthathi leading the Lord in the front. CUB staffer Madhavan, who resides near the Oppilliappan Koil and a cousin of Ghoshti member Sundar Raman of Desikar Temple, Mylapore (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/01/vedantha-desikar-srinivasa-perumal.html) too joined in for both the morning and evening recitals.

Vedic Presentation
Following the Lord was Varadarajan of Madurantakam Eri Kaatha Ramar Koil and elder brother of Rangarajan Bhattar (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/11/villiyambakkam-rangarajan-bhattar.html) formerly the priest of the Madurantakam and the Desikar temple in Mylapore reciting the Vedic verses. He told this writer that while he had served at the Madurantakam temple and later at the Papanayakkam Palayam Perumal temple in Coimbatore in the past, he was now dedicating his life to rendering the Vedic Verses at remote Divya Desam utsavams. He was present at the Therazhundur Brahmotsavam as well last week. On his TVS 50, he travels 60 kms from Kumbakonam and back for these two street processions each day of this utsavam. During the morning and evening processions on Tuesday, he was joined in by a Vedic student and his acharya from the patshala in Senganoor.

A Sea of Yellow at Thiru Velliyankudi
A special feature of this Brahmotsavam is the fact that the entire Sripatham team have been provided with a uniform that includes a yellow veshti for each of them. It was indeed a positive move by Ramamoorthy Bhattachar to get them to wear the traditional attire. It was a sea of yellow at Thiruvelliyankudi on Tuesday as all the priests too sported the yellow veshti.

Sumptuous food at the Madapalli
A cook has been sourced from Kumbakonam for the entire utsavam and he presented Dhadhyonam and Chutney to all the Kainkaryapakas in the morning following the street procession. For over an hour, the Prabhandham Ghosti members sat in front of the Perumal and presented the third and fourth cantos of Periya Thirumozhi ending with the local Paasuram on Thiru Velliyakudi. They also presented the Neerattam verses of Periyazhvaar while the Thirumanjanam was being performed following the procession in the morning.

Later in the evening, they return to present the fourth canto of Tiruvoimozhi as well as the verses from the Desikar Prabhandham even as Kola Villi Ramar was being decked up for the Garuda Vahana procession. Over a 1000 years ago, Thiru Mangai Azhvaar found devotees in huge numbers offering worship to the Lord seen reclining on a serpent and holding a discus in hand.

A delightful Voyali by Sripatham
The biggest cheer of the day came at 9pm after the Garuda Vahana Street procession. Testimony to the revival of this Divya Desam to its golden days was the fact that several hundreds of devotees including young kids gathered inside the temple even as Perumal made his way back in front of the Maragada Valli Thayar Sannidhi to watch the special Voyali presentation. The Sripatham delighted them to a presentation of Voyali as Kola Villi Ramar danced to the nagaswaram tunes of Raghupathi Raghava Raja Ram. It was a fitting finale to a long day at Thiru Velliyankudi Divya Desam.
Clearly the residents are quite happy with the revival of the Brahmotsavam and they are once again able to have darshan of Perumal atop different vahanas something that this generation and the earlier one had not witnessed. It is a new experience for all of them and there is a new found vibrancy in this historical Divya Desam.

Chariot Procession - The next big task?
One has to be grateful to Ramamoorthy Bhattachar, who has been for over 25 years (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/09/thiru-velliyankudi-ramamoorthy-bhattar.html) and to Uppili and Sriram for bringing back memories from the past. And in the next few years, it would not be surprising to see a new Chariot move around the streets of Thiru Velliyankudi.

How to reach
From Kumbakonam, one can get down at Sholapuram (on the Madras Highway) and take an auto 6 kms East (Rs. 150). From Aduthurai, take a Sholapuram bound mini bus to get down at Thiru Velliyankudi. From Thirupananthal, auto costs Rs. 150 to the temple. Call auto Shanmughanandam @ 9843345436/6380268005

This Octogenarian Priest is still active with his Kainkaryam and was recently at the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam at the Devathirajan Sannidhi in Therazhundur
Lakshmana Dikshithar, popularly known as Babu Dikshithar, is well into his 80s but unmindful of his age, he made a trip recently from his home town of Mannargudi to Therazhundur on the invitation of his son in law, Vasan Bhattar for the Vaikashi Brahmotsavam. While his two grandsons support their appa Vasan Bhattar at the Brahmotsavam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2021/09/therazhundur-vasan-bhattar.html), Babu Diskhithar is the one who was at the Devathirajan Sannidhi helping out devotees with the darshan of the Moolavar. He has seen Therazhundur from a very young age and recalls Chimney lamps burning all over this historical temple town in those years in the 1950s and 60s.

Trained under Shona Dikshithar
He quit school after class IV and pursued Patshala education at Singam Iyengar’s patshala in Srirangam where he learnt Kaavyam. He then learned the agama from Shona Dikshithar for a decade. With only 16 days Archaka Kainkaryam at the Rajagopalaswamy temple in Mannargudi and 22 days in the Ramar temple in Vaduvur, Babu Dikshithar also performed Sripatham Kainkaryam, Sannidhi Paricharakar and Madapalli service in Mannargudi, in the decades gone by to keep his engagement with the temple right through the year.

A contented life
He is philosophical about the way this life has gone for him. He told this writer at the Rajagopalaswamy temple in Mannargudi (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2023/03/mannargudi-rajagopalaswamy-panguni.html) in September 2021 about the contentment he has had in life "Whatever is required to lead a peaceful and happy life, God has given me. Rs. 10/- to Rs. 15/- was big money in those days and we were happy with that.. We depended on Thattu Kaasu but we led a contended life performing service to the Lord accepting whatever Rajagopalaswamy and Shenbagavalli Thaayar gave us. I never asked a single devotee to place any money in the Thattu. I learned early on in life that God will make the decision for you and will present to you what you require in life.”

Will be at Ahobilam for Jeer's Birthday Celebrations next month!!!
His commitment and devotional service came in for special praise from the Jeers of Ahobila Mutt and successive heads of this Mutt have had great regard for him. A month from now he will be at Ahobilam on the special invitation of Azhagiya Singar for the latter’s birthday celebrations in the ancient Divya Desam. He is not sure if son in law Vasan Bhattar would like his travelling all the way to Ahobilam (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2010/10/singavel-kundram-ahobilam.html) at this age but he says he has to respect the personal invitation of the Jeer and make it to the Mutt headquarters in the second week of July.

During the Brahmotsavam at Therazhundur, there were scores of devotees visiting the Moolavar Sannidhi through the morning and evening. Babu Dikshithar displayed great patience to serve each of these devotees presenting the Sthala Puranam of this Divya Desam, describing each of the idols inside the Sannidhi and answering their queries with great patience, much to their delight.
His grandsons come to the Sannidhi at the turn of the hour to check if all was well with their Thatha only to be sent away asking them to focus on the utsavam. He inspired confidence in them that he would take good care of the devotees at the Sannidhi.

His has been a tale of unflinching devotion despite financially challenging times for several decades in the previous century. He believes that Shengamala Thayar resides in him and she gives him the strength and confidence to perform this devotional service even at this age. Truly Babu Dikshithar is an inspiration to all the young Bhattars on keeping one’s Kainkaryam going through an entire lifetime.

Thiru Velliyankudi Next Gen Sundararajan Bhattar

This 26 year old Bhattar has committed to a lifetime Kainkaryam at the feet of Kola Villi Ramar

While a good number of the next generation priests in remote temples in Tamil Nadu have been moving away, over the last decade, from the temple space into academics and subsequently the corporate world, there are a few who are bucking the trend and committing to a lifetime service in temples. The Kola Villi Ramar temple in Thiru Velliyankudi, a Divya Desam praised by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar, that had been in a deserted state in the 1980s and 90s, is seeing the next gen Bhattar taking over responsibilities from his appa and that augurs well for this temple.

Original inhabitants of this historical temple town had made their way to larger cities in the second half of the previous century. With the passing away of long standing priest, Veeraraghava Bhattar, most of the utsavams too had come to a halt. It was Krishnapremi Anna (he passed away last year), who roped in Ramamoorthy Bhattar in the late 1990s as the Chief Priest at this Divya Desam as well as for the Srinivasa Perumal temple in Senganoor(https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2017/09/periya-vachan-pillai-senganoor.html), a couple of kms from here.

As with most remote Divya Desams in TN, the traditionalists, who formed an integral part of the Agraharam bringing vibrancy to the temple, have remained away for a large part with only a handful of devotees visiting their ancestral location even now. Ramamoorthy Bhattar has been the one who also doubles up as the cook at the madapalli through most of the year, except during the three big utsavams for as seen in many other temples full time cook has been hard to find in these times. Against this backdrop, the decision of Sundararajan Bhattar to take on the mantle from his appa Ramamoorthy Bhattar is commendable.

No second thoughts
Right from a young age, he was keen on a life around the two temples. As a 7 year old, he performed Kainkaryam at the Pandurangan Sannidhi in Senganoor on directions from Krishnapremi Anna. Given the trend of the time, his family asked him to focus on academics but he was keen on letting go of the school education and moving to a Patshala at the earliest. And that he did after he completed his Class VI in the school at Thirupanandal.

For eight years, he learned the Krishna Yajur Veda at the centuries old Raja Veda Patshala in Kumbakonam even as he watched with great happiness his appa managing the Divya Desam all alone all through the year. That he says was a big inspiration for him to continue this Kainkaryam at this temple.

எங்கும் ஆம் பொழில்களின் நடுவே
வாய்த்த நீர் பாயும் மண்ணியின் தென்பால்
திருவெள்ளியங்குடி அதுவே

Around the completion of his Vedic Education, he presented Veda Parayanam at sacred events and went on Vaideeham activities for a year. He later learned the Vaikanasa Agama Kramas from Sampath Bhattar of Konerirajapuram (https://prtraveller.blogspot.com/2014/05/konerirajapuram-varadaraja-perumal.html) and trained under him. He received the Vaikanasa Rathnakara certificate from Raja Bhattar, Madurai.

Brief Stint Overseas
Soon after the morning street procession on the fourth day of the Vaikasi Brahmotsavam, 26 year old Sundararajan Bhattar told this writer that for a brief period, he performed archaka service at the Rama temple in Singapore but did not like the overseas stint and hence returned (Ramamoorthy Bhattar too had had an archaka engagement in the US for a few years) “I continue to get lucrative offers for archaka service from the UK, Australia and Singapore but am not keen on a long term engagement with overseas temples as my heart is with Kainkaryam at this Divya Desam where my life has centred all through right from my childhood.”

At Senganoor and Thiru Velliyankudi, he has been the ‘Raksha Bandhana’ Bhattar during the Brahmotsavam this and he sees that as a great responsibility and honour. He says he is proud of his appa’s efforts to revive three big utsavams at this Divya Desam – Pavitrotsavam, Adyayana Utsavam and the Brahmotsavam “From the time when most utsavams had stopped in the not so distant past, this is a great revival for this temple. It will be a big moment for us when the Chariot runs again around the four streets in a couple of years.”
While the Brahmotsavam was revived last year after over half a century, Sundararajan Bhattar is particularly pleased with the devotee participation this year"While we sourced a lot of the vahanas last year from Senganoor, we now have our own Vahanas. And that is another big development. The happiness on the faces of the devotees during the vahana processions and the Voyali serves as a great motivation for us to continue our Kainkaryam at the feet of Kola Villi Ramar."

ஊற்றிடை நின்ற வாழையின் கனிகள்
ஊழ்த்து வீழ்ந்தன உண்டு மண்டி
சேற்றிடைக் கயல்கள் உகள் திகழ் வயல் சூழ்

Unlike the early years when his appa took over the archaka service here, things have improved financially at this temple. "The financial challenges are behind us and devotees are coming back to temples in good numbers. This being a Sukra Sthalam, we are seeing a steady stream of devotees coming in for Parikaram, adding to the devotee crowd. We have been taken care of well and that has helped us focus on our kainkaryam without having to worry about managing the family like it was a few decades ago in remote temples."

As presented in Thiru Mangai Azhvaar's verse, devotees came in good numbers during the Brahmotsavam to seek the blessings of the Lord of Velliyankudi

அரி அரி என்று அவை அழைப்ப
வெள்ளியார் வணங்க  விரைந்து  அருள் செய்வான்

In addition to performing service at Thiru Velliyankudi and Senganoor, Sundararajan Bhattar has also participated in consecrations at other Divya Desams such as Thiru Kannamangai and Nachiyar Koil over the last 12 months.

His commitment to a lifetime Kainkaryam at this Divya Desam is a positive development. At At a time, when many remote temples are short on archakas, this appa-son duo's presence at Thiru Velliyankudi is likely to help get this historical temple to its good old days of grand utsavam celebrations.

In his hey days at Infosys in the 1990s, he was known for signing large deals after a game of golf in the US, such was his networking ability. He is now using the huge network he had built in the US over his two decades in the IT space to raise funds for charitable causes.
A cricket fan himself, Phaneesh told this writer shortly after he watched India win a close encounter that he is starting to do such events for various social causes mostly in the health space "This was with Sunny for heart to heart foundation which does surgeries for babies born with defective hearts. There is a 99% chance of survival with the surgery being so really good."

He said that with the funds raised, the lives of 150 children with heart ailments will be saved through these surgeries. All these heart surgeries will be done at the Sai Hospital in Muddenahalli, in the outskirts of Bangalore.
