Oothukadu Kalinga Narthana Temple Samprokshnam

Temple dedicated to Musicians wears a new look after 27 years
A Free Music Concert at what cost?


After a long wait of 27 years, Samprokshanam was performed this Monday (Oct 26) morning at the Nalankonda Chola period Kalinga Narthana temple in Oothukadu. The previous Samprokshanam took place in 1988, after 16 years of renovation efforts (renovation had started in 1972 and was completed in 1988!!!!). In the early part of this decade, the temple had worn a dilapidated look with falling walls, broken pillars and a dry tank (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2010/05/kalinga-narthana-temple-oothukadu.html)

After nearly three years of activity, the renovation that has been long overdue has finally been completed and the temple now wears a grand new look. Over Rs. 3crores has been spent in this current exercise.

Venkata Kavi’s contributions
The temple has a historical connect with the music world for it was here that the music .legend Venkata (Kavi) Subba Iyer composed many of his memorable and unforgettable songs including Swagatham Krishna, Alaipayuthey Kanna, Aadathu Asangathu, Thaaye Yashoda, Kannan Varukinra Neram Karai Oram, Paal Vadiyum Mugam, Pillai Piravi Venum and Enna Thavam Seitheno.

Venkata Kavi’s ‘Omkara Siddhaiga Kalinga Narthana’ is a specific reference to the Lord of Oothukadu. He also composed 7songs referred to as Saptha Rathna Keerthanai. A new sannidhi has been built in memory of this great poet. A new music cum dance stage has been erected next to his sannidhi.

Sore Point of the Samprokshanam
Musician Aruna Sairam who had contributed significantly to the renovation efforts (she had presented an exclusive concert in Madras a few years back whose proceeds were directed to the renovation of this temple) presented a concert at this new stage on Sunday Oct 25, on the eve of the Samprokshanam. This was watched by a huge crowd previously unseen at the temple for any Kutcheri.

While her acceptance to present a Kutcheri (free of charge) was welcome, the flight ticket (Madras- Trichy- Madras), the AC car from Trichy to Kumbakonam, the big VVIP stay (for multiple people) in a prominent high class hotel seemed a sore point for is this not a temple dedicated to music legends – is this not a temple where Venkata Kavi composed his legendary songs. Are we not seeing this as a temple where the God blesses musicians – upcoming as well as legendary!!!

It would have been a nice gesture to have taken care of the air travel and high profile accommodation expenses and not having the temple fund that (through the devotee’s contributions).

Arangetram for Music / Dance artistes
In centuries gone by, plays used to be presented through the night in front of the temple during Vasanthotsavam (May-June). The temple is looking to initiate similar concerts/plays at the newly erected stage starting with the Krishna Jayanthi festival in Avani next year. The stage is also expected to be a platform for arangetram for upcoming artistes.

This is an exclusive temple dedicated to Lord Krishna in his Kalinga Narthana Posture and relates to an episode of Krishna in his childhood days. 

Raja Gopuram and Vimanams
The Eastern temple tower that had been in a dilapidated condition sports a grand look with beautiful new sculptures depicting the Kalinga Narthana episode.  All the Vimanas too have been refurbished. The outer walls of the temple that had been completely damaged were brought down and new walls have been built. At the entrance on the main road off the Kumbakonam- Thiru Karugavur highway, a grand arch has been erected welcoming the devotees.

Child Krishna’s activities as paintings
An interesting addition to the temple is the presentation through a number of artistic paintings, in the Maha Mandapa, of Krishna’s childhood activities including his Kalinga Narthana episode and his flute recital that lured even the trees and plants, besides animals in the Gokulam neighbourhood (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2015/09/krishna-plays-flute.html)

The Madapalli too has been rebuilt. A grand ‘Anna Dhanam’ event is being planned during the Samprokshanam. Yet another new addition is the Yaga Salai where Prarthana Homams are being planned every month on the Rohini Star.

A renovated house for the Bhattar
As part of this exercise, the Bhattar’s house opposite the temple has also been renovated.

The Legend
Nandini and Patti, the children of sacred cow Kamadhenu, had made it a practice to offer milk to Lord Pasupatheeswarar in Avoor, about 2kms from here. Every morning, the two would graze here at Oothukadu. On one such trip, they listened to Sage Narada’s narration of the story of child Krishna taking on the poisonous asura snake (Kalinga) and performing the Kalinga Narthana.

To relieve them from the shock of listening to this treacherous episode, Krishna presented the Kalinga Narthana display here at the temple tank ( by emerging out of a spring) thus convincing them that this was nothing but a child’s play for him.

Unique Posture
An interesting feature at the Oothukadu Perumal temple is the unique posture of Kalinga Narthana. His left leg is seen on top of the Asura Snake but not touching the snake (there is just a small gap of the size of a paper). His left thumb alone is holding the tail of the snake with none of his other four fingers in contact with the tail!! His four fingers are in a Bharatanatyam Abhinaya Kolam.

His right leg is seen above the ground in a dance posture. On a close look, one can find the scars on his right leg below the knee, the result of his fight with Kalinga. His left leg is seen atop the Serpent. Here too there seems to be a small gap between the Lord’s feet and the Serpent hood, the size of a thread. Since Kalinga surrendered finally to the Lord, he was a little soft at the end and is believed to have not placed his full force on the Serpent’s hood.


Revival of Float Festival
It was here at this location (when Krishna emerged from the spring) that there used to be an annual float festival with an enactment of the Kalinga Narthana episode through a puppetry show. The Lord used to be taken to the Neeraata Mandapa (now defunct) at the centre of the tank and puppets would emerge out of the tank with their heads masked as hoods displaying a serpent with five heads and (puppet) Krishna would dance atop them.

This was a major celebratory event every year presented in memory of this historical episode and used to be watched by a huge number of devotees from across the region.

Phase 2 of Renovation
In the 2nd phase post the Samprokshnam, the temple is looking to rebuild the mandapa in the middle of the tank and to revive the float festival and the enactment of this episode. The temple is also looking to build walls around the sacred garden.

Prarthana Sthalam
The temple is a Prarthana Sthalam for upcoming music and dance artistes. Kalinga Narthana is said to fulfil all their prayers and bring them success in their art. This is also believed to be a Prarthana Sthalam for the unmarried as well as childless couples.

Krishna Rama Praising their Achievements

Periyazhvar showcases the Lord’s achievements in the Krishna and Rama Avatara

After great decads where Periyazhvar shares the emotions of a mother in great depth taking us through the feelings of a mother whose daughter is being lured by a handsome boy, it looked like he wanted a breather or wanted to give the devotees a breather and had it easy.

In these verses Periyazhvar extols his achievements of the Lord in two of his avatars and alternates through the ten verses between Krishna and Rama Avataras.

After well over 250 verses of Pillai Tamil describing the childhood of Krishna, he praises some of the achievements of Rama and Krishna.

Garuda brings Kalpataru for Satyabhama
Having killed Narakasura at the request of Indra, Krishna, along with Satyabhama came to meet him. Satyabhama was suddenly excited on seeing the flowers from Kalpataru but was refused by Indra’s wife. But the Lord’s vehicle Garuda simply uprooted the entire tree in anger and carried it to Satyabhama’s garden while Indra could only watch in silence (என்நாதன்தேவிக்குஅன்றுஇன்பப்பூஈயாதாள்..........வன்  வலியப்பறித்திட்ட).

When Parasurama arrogantly asked if he could wield his bow, Rama took it and sent a sharp arrow at Tataka that saw the end of the demon (This is once again endorsed in the Hanuman’s praise of Lord Rama in the last decad of the third canto)

Rukmini sent a message to her beloved about her impending wedding to Sisupala as ordained by her brother Rukmi and asked him to come there as early as possible to take her away. When Krishna was about to take Rukmini in his chariot, Rukmi stopped him only to be slain(உருப்பிணிநங்கையைதேரேற்றிக்கொண்டுவிருப்புற்றுஅங்குஏகவிரைந்துஎதிர்வந்து………….).

And then Periyazhvar moves into an episode in the Ramayana. He obediently followed the instructions of his step mother and left for the forest. When his own mother called out for him and cried, his step mother asked him to proceed without stopping (மாற்றுத்தாய்சென்றுவனம்போகியென்றிடஈற்றுத்தாய்பின்தொடர்ந்துஎம்பிரான்என்றுஅழ).

He played the role of the messenger and when that failed, he donned the role of a charioteer guiding the Pandavas to victory. He had earlier killed the deadly Kaliya and danced atop the Serpent.

When Baratha followed his elder brother to the forest and offered him the crown, the Lord gave him his sandals. Then at the Dhandaka forest, he cut Surpanaka’s ear and nose. Later, he created a bridge across the huge ocean, defeated the Lankan King, who is stated to have misjudged the strength of his enemy and gave the crown to his younger brother Vibheeshana.

Periyazhvar reminds us of the story (that we saw earlier several times in his Pillai Tamil) of the cowherd boy uprooting the twin Marutha trees and the melodious music that emanates from his flute.

Through the verses, he asks the devotees to clap and sing praise of the Lord who destroyed the evil forces for the sake of the survival of the good and the noble.

Following this decad and the next, in the last 150verses, he is at his devotional poetic best trying to relate to God and providing practical prayers to devotees to try and reach God. 

Paripatal Maliruncholai Balarama

Balarama as a Deity was prominent at Thiru Maliruncholai in the Sangam Age
Nalayira Divya Prabhandham ( which followed Paripatal) offers similar description of the animals, flowers and trees around the Divya Desam
The 6th Paripatal on Tirumaal by Ilam Peruvalootiyar of the Pandya Clan is in a sweet rhythm. Typical of a resident of the Pandya Kingdom, the poet has shown great devotion to the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai and praised the greatness of the Lord there ( similar verses of praise on Maliruncholai have later been presented by Periyazhvar and his daughter Andal in the Nalayira Divya Prabhandham).

The entire theme of this poem is the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai (referred to as Malirun Kunram) and the greatness of the hill.

While there are very many great mountains in the world the poet says that the Solai Hills is the holiest among them.

Praising Balarama and his ornaments
Silver cascade of flowers that flow down the hill looks like white Katampu Garlands adorning Balarama’s mighty chest. It is a rare reference to Balarama’s chest ornaments. He also praises Balarama as having a beautiful single ear pendent. Balarama is referred as Lord’s elder brother and of white complexion.

Images of two gods of Thiru Maliruncholai - Krishna and Balarama - are mentioned. They were believed to have divine powers and devotees prayed to them for relief from cycle of birth and death. The poem brings out the worship of Balarama at Thiru Malirunkuram. Clearly this is yet another indication of the then prevalence of workship of Balarama in the Pandya region in that period. Surprisingly, one rarely finds a Sannidhi for Balarama in any of the temples these days.

The poet compares Tirumaal to a dark mountain bathed in the gentle morning sun.


Animals at Malirun Kunram
The poet find excited female monkeys leaping from rock to rock with their young ones clutching their bosom ( similar reference is found in Periyazhvar Thirumozhi in the decad relating to Krishna holding the Govardhana Mountain).

Beautiful peacocks call each other from everywhere. The Kuyils are seen making sweet noises all around.

Wide range of Flowers
The poet praise the jasmine vines as being covered with blossom buds that he describes as ‘bright and chaste’ as wives!!!! The Kurukkati trees are seen shedding their leaves on the ground.

The devotees who throng the roads to the hill are advised to worship the hill itself as it is seen as the seat of the God who removes all worries and destroys the sins of devotees.


From this poem dating back to the Sangam Period, one gets a real feel of the scene around the Thiru Maliruncholai temple. The most fascinating description though is of Balarama and the extent of worship dedicated to him at Thiru Maliruncholai. One wonders as to how that worship got dispensed with at the temple. 

Paripatal Iruntaiyoor Madurai

Streets of Iruntaiyoor were full of shops with honest traders
People were religious and lived in harmony – There was happiness all around

The last of the now available 7 Paripatals on Lord Vishnu (Tirumaal) is on a place referred to in the Sangam Period as Iruntaiyoor, on the outskirts of Madurai. (later identified as the place of Kutalakkar temple).

This final poem is by an unknown author and is in a rather easy style of description. It has a certain poetic grace to it.


Iruntaiyoor’s Description – Trees and Ponds
The poet praises the Lord of Iruntaiyoor as one who is seen in a sitting posture. He describes the Lord as being bright and beautiful like the Sapphire. Iruntaiyoor had lofty trees that were seen on the slopes of the hill.

He specifically refers to Venkai trees as blossoming in a lovely way. The Venkatampu tree is described as being tall and Makila tree as being very fragrant.

He describes a cool fragrant pond near the temple where Lotus bloomed in big numbers. Swarms of bees lined up and buzzed at the new blooming. Schools of fish swam in the pools and were seen in countless numbers like the stars in the sky.

Trade in Madurai
The poet praises the people of Iruntaiyoor as being always happy and prosperous.  They were engaged in brick trade in addition to dealing in a wide range of goods. There seemed to be a high level of social activity in this region.

The streets of Iruntaiyoor were full of shops. All the traders seemed honest. Food stuff, cosmetics and edible were sold. Fragrant pastes, clothes, jewels of all kinds, cleansing powder, diamonds, gems, glittering stones, gold and silver and other precious items were traded.

These seemed to be produced from around the hills and mountains and from the sea for the benefit of the devotees congregating there at Iruntaiyoor.

Elsewhere in the town, there resided wise Brahmins who were well versed in Vedas. All around people were steadfast in following the Dharmic path.

Adisesha Temple

At Kullavaay near Madurai, there was an exclusive temple for Adisesha.  Men and Women of all ages flocked there carrying fragrant fumigants and flowers offered to the Lord in worship. The greatness of Adisesha is described.

He ends the poem with a prayer to bless everyone to adore this Lord who has 1000 awesome heads enshrined in Poomooti Nagar temple at Kullavaay.

Conclusion
 From all the 7 Paripatals ,it is clear that people here in Tamil Nadu especially in the Pandya region were religious. They were devoted to God. There were no fights on religious grounds. Worship of Supreme Lord in his various forms was almost universal in the Sangam days.

Nachiyar Thirumozhi Return the girls’ garments

We are not your mother’s daughters’ in law that you can do this to us!!!!
 - Andal to Krishna seated atop the Kurundu Tree
In the 2nd decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal presented Krishna’s mischievous act of breaking the sand castles lovingly built by the young girls of Gokulam. She continues showcasing her beloved Lord’s playful activities into the 3rd decad. This time his mischievous play is a lot more personal and embarrassing.

While in the previous decad, she questioned his intention of dismantling the castles made of sand, here she turns a little more aggressive and asks if it is fair on his part to indulge in acts such as deceitfully taking away the clothes of the women.She gives a background to this to explain their hardship – both physical and mental.

It is interesting that she expresses both anger and love in the same verse. While they are furious at his act of trying to dishonour them, they are still not able to take away their eyes from him for he is always adorable.

Good to Bathe in the Pond before Dawn
Rising to the call of the cocks early in the morning, the girls woke up and walked a long way to the lake for a bath pre dawn. As one can imagine, it was pretty chilly and cold and dark. With the clothes off, the young girls entered the lake confident that no one was around on that dark morning. And they began enjoying their bath.
கோழியழைப்பதன்முன்னம்குடைந்துநீராடுவான்போந்தோம்

We will never enter the lake again!!!
As they were thus having a ‘cool bath’, it was time for the Sun to rise. And as the light began to hit the moving waves of the lake and they were at the end of their bath, they found to their horror that their clothes had gone missing. She accepts their ignorance of not guessing his likely presence and promises that they will never enter the lake again for a bath, if he returns their clothes this one time!!!!
She seems to indicate that they have forgotten him just for a moment in the joy of their cool bath and says that along with her friends, she offers her sincere and devoted prayers to him and pleads with him to return their clothes.

ஏழைமையாற்றவும்பட்டோம்இனியென்றும்பொய்கைக்குவாரோம்
தோழியும்நானும்தொழுதோம்துகிலைப்பணித்தருளாயே

In this decad, Andal sings praise of Lord Krishna and his very many brave acts but questions if he considered this particular act as one such (act of bravery) for this seemed to her to be a little demeaning!!! While they were suffering in embarrassment, this mischievous boy was there up on the Kurundu tree with all their clothes.

She explains to him the severe consequences that might arise if they were to return without the clothes.

She asks the Lord who is happily enjoying from the tree as to whether he realises the embarrassment he has caused.  How would they be able to come out of the water in this current state. Further, she is worried as to how the parents will react. And she is certain that they will have to face wild reaction from the mothers that morning if they were to go back without the clothes.

எம்மனைமார்காணிலொட்டார்
பொல்லாங்குஈதென்றுகருதாய்
பூங்குருந்தேறியிருந்தி

What job does he have around the lake?
She then enquires as to the reason he came to the lake this early in the morning. And she acknowledges their ignorance in not noting his presence around the lake. She wonders as to how he actually made his way to this far off lake that early in the morning with darkness all around.

Bribes Krishna
Seeking a quick solution, Andal says that the young girls are ready to give him anything he wants provided he returns their clothes. This she now sees as the only way that will help them return home unnoticed.

நீவேண்டியதெல்லாம்தருவோம்
பல்லாரும்காணாமேபோவோம்
பட்டைப்பணித்தருளாயே

From inside the lake, all the young girls of Gokulam are looking around with their eyes wide open to see if anyone (the residents of Gokulam) is around. Andal describes the sadness in the young girls that morning. ‘It is a public pond and we have to look all around to ensure that others do not know our current plight’. There is fear in their eyes. As one looks at their eyes, tears have started rolling down in shock of what might happen if anyone finds them in their current state.

பறக்கவிழித்துஎங்கும்நோக்கியபலர்குடைந்தாடும்கனையில்
அரக்கநில்லாகண்ணநீர்கள்அலமருகின்றவா  பாராய்

Having tried to psyche him by questioning his embarrassing act and then trying to bribe him, Andal also uses the threatening technique to see if her beloved would move. She says that their parents and friends are likely to come striking at him if they come to know of his acts.

Physical Pain inside the lake
In successive decads, Andal describes the physical pain that they are experiencing.They express their distressed state of their extended stay inside the pond. The fishes are biting their legs. The lotus stalks are rubbing against their legs and that is pricking their legs. She compares this feeling to one’s pain when one would be stung by a poisonous Scorpio.
காலைக்காதுவிடுகின்றகயலொடுவாளைவிரவி
வேலைப்பிடுத்தேன்னைமார்களோட்டில்என்னவிளையாட்டோ

தடதவிழ்தாமரைப்பொய்கைத்தாள்கள்எம்காலைக்கதுவ
விடத்தேளெறிந்தாலே  போலவேதனைஆற்றவும்பட்டோம்

Praising his various playful acts such as tossing up the pots and his exquisite dance, she says that this particular act is beyond their game. This one is too difficult for them to bear. They accept that have been deceived by this game and want him to save any further embarrassment.

She explains that their bodies have become tired standing inside the chilly early morning water. She calls his current deeds as being very unfair. With their homes far away from the pond, how would they return in their current state with the Sun shining bright on the streets of Gokulam. She says that there is a very angry feeling to shout out at him. And yet they love him as he is just so adorable.

But that aside if their mothers see their current situation, all the girls are going to be shouted at and given a verbal beating for their careless act.

நீரிலேநின்றுஅயர்க்கின்றோம்நீதியல்லாதனசெய்தாய்
ஊரகம்சாலவும்சேய்த்தால்ஊழியெல்லாம்உணர்வானே
ஆர்வம்உனக்கேயுடையோம்  அம்மானையார்காணில்ஒட்டார்


She says that he is looking at this only as a sport but unfortunately their mothers will not look at it in a similar vein. For him it is only a simple mischievous play.

Praising his Valarous Acts
It was valorous to escape that treacherous Kamsa who was looking to kill him on birth, but this act even Yashoda, who normally is very supportive of him, will rebuke and will not gain her approval. Andal prays with folded hands asking him to return their clothes.

It was a great act to jump on the deadly serpent and dance atop him. She tries to make him feel bad asking him if he is not feeling bad about his embarrassing acts.With him atop on the kurundu trees she calls him the king of monkeys. Not only are they down mentally, even physically it is hurting inside the lake.

An angry remark
In a beautiful verse, she says that ‘we are not your mother’s daughters-in-law that he can play around like this (Interestingly in the earlier decad, she had praised him and suggested that him becoming his mother’s son in law would solve all the problems). The fact that they are all fond of him does not entitle him to such a mischievous game. She tells him in no uncertain terms that what he is doing is not right.

மாமியார்மக்களேயல்லோம்மற்றும்இங்குஎல்லாரும்போந்தார்
சேமமேலன்றிதுசாலச்சிக்கெனநாம்இதுசொன்னோம்
And wants him to return their clothes!!!

Srihari Parthasarathy Prabhandham Acharya

Significant Contribution in taking forward our traditions into this new Century
The Sr. Sports Journalist at The Hindu has gone about creating the next generation of Divya Prabhandham Experts in a quiet unassuming way 
His best student of the last three decades, P Sundararaman (Chartered Accountant and Dy. Finance Manager at Ashok Leyland) calls him a unique Acharya. He says with a great deal of confidence that it is unlikely that there will be any Prabhandham Acharya of his dedication in the city today. He knows better than most for 25 year old Sundararaman joined the Prabhandham class of Srihari Parthasarathy at Vedanta Desikar temple in Mylapore when he was just 7years old in the mid 1990s.

As a young enthusiastic school boy, Sundararaman would wake up early and very often stand at the entrance of the Desikar temple before the clock had ticked to 6am. On most days of the week Sports Journalist Srihari (The Hindu) would drive back home well at 1.30am after the sports pages were finalized. And yet, throughout the decade following the commencement of his first organized batch, he would be at the temple at 6am compromising on his sleep primarily because he was excited to share his knowledge with an enthusiastic set of boys who showed true devotion in wanting to learn the Nalayira Divya Prabhandham.

To this day, Divya Prabhandham Acharya Srihari remains his disciplined self. His presence in the Ghosti infuses a sense of discipline and commitment in the entire group.

Hailing from an orthodox family in the Ahobila Mutt tradition, Srihari,  son of renowned Bruhaspathi and Vedic scholar Natteri Parthasarathy, learned Nalayira Divya Prabandham from Vaikuntavaasi Sevilimedu Srinivasacharya and later from his maternal uncle Esayanur Sridhara Satakopacharya (presently Aradhakar, Ahobila Mutt) and completed the course at the age of 17.

Srihari had the fortune of undergoing Aahnikam and Grantha Chathushtaya Kalakshepam from Maha Vidwans Vaikuntavaasi Purisai Nadadhur Sri Bhashya Simhasanam Krishnamacharya Swami and Azhisoor Srinivasacharya Swami.

Having learnt from such stalwarts in the 1970s, Srihari was keen to share his learning with the next generation of students and began his Divya Prabhandham tutoring in the mid 1980s initiating the sacred verses of the Azhvaars to a small group of students.

When an organized and formal daily tutoring on Nalayira Divya Prabhandham was contemplated at the Vedantha Desikar temple in the mid 1990s, it was Srihari’s services that the Veda Parayana Sabha sought. Since then, he has been tutoring the students (free of charge) for almost two decades.


His first batch of 20 most devoted students graduated in 2007. With these students he adopted different techniques to get them to imbibe not just aspects relating to the recital but also to understand the essence of the verses through a secret process (read Box Story).

He is now well into the 2nd batch of about 25 students comprising both youngsters as well as elderly people. This batch is expected to complete the course over the next 12-18months.

During this period, he has also taken classes on Thiru Aradhana Kramam.

Founder Editor of Website
End of 2006, when the temple was planning to launch a website, Srihari was entrusted with the task of creating a strong content to propagate the time-tested values of the rich tradition of Sanathana Dharma and important tenets of the Visishtaadvaita philosophy.

As the Founder Editor of the website, Srihari has been conducting online quizzes and contests on varied topics relating to this philosophy. Over the last decade, participation has expanded manifold and now includes contestants from across the globe. As part of this engagement, he has also been writing commentaries, online, on Vaishnavite Philosophy.

Idly Venpa @ School
Srihari was proficient in Tamil right from a young age. Even as a school student, he used to write poems that featured in school magazines. Once when his Tamil teacher wanted the students to try out a Venpa, Srihari came up with one on IDLY that brought out its benefits, its attributes and the special taste. He was singled out for appreciation by his teacher who spotted the poetic potential in Srihari. He also wrote a few sonnets in Tamil that were published in different magazines.

He has the distinction of being the district topper in Tamil in the Class X examination.

Several decades later, when a souvenir was being launched as part of the Samprokshanam Celebrations of Vedanta Desikar temple in 2013, Srihari came up with another Venpa- this time on the Lord.

Commentary on Tiruvoimozhi
When a book was brought out in 2006 as part of the 80th Birthday Celebrations of 45thJeer of Ahobila Mutt, Srihari wrote a ten page commentary with his own interpretation of each of the decads of the 10th Canto of Nam Azhvaar’s Tiruvoimozhi including praising Lord’s Kalyana Gunas, describing the way in which Azhvaar has shown us the noble path and about how Prapatti’s five Angams have been showcased in this last canto.

A year earlier, in 2005, he had compiled and edited the special book brought out as part of the centenary celebrations of Veda Parayana Sabha that had been launched in 1905 under the auspices of the Vedanta Desikar temple.

A Significant Contribution

One of his significant contributions to the Vaishnavite Literature came when he co-authored, in 2013, the English translation of Volume Two of the treatise on Ahnika Grantham from the original Manipravaalam text of the 45th Jeer of Ahobila Mutt. The 2nd volume dealt comprehensively with the Aachaaram that is required to perform the Panchakaala Prakriyaas during the days of Suddhi and Asuddhi caused by different Tittus. Working non-stop for a few months to meet the very short deadline, he put together the English version of the treatise.
                                            
In June this year, Srihari had the honour of being invited to write a commentary on Desikar Prabhandham as part of the special magazine that was brought out on the occasion of the 60thBirthday Celebrations of the 46th Jeer of the Ahobila Mutt.

While the idea has been for youngsters to learn and become proficient, he has also encouraged older people to take up to learning the Divya Prabhandham. Some of those who have learnt from him have now graduated to taking classes on their own.

Srihari has, in a very quiet way, kept our tradition going creating the next set of Prabhandham experts. One can easily note the reverence that the entire group has for him when he walks into the Ghosti. One can hear his voice only during the Prabhandham recital, otherwise he rarely talks. In fact, as an Acharya, he proactively discourages any chit-chat in and around the temple and has never compromised on the devotional aspects!!! His first batch of students are particularly proud of this uncompromising approach of their Acharya for it has helped them enormously in every walk of life, especially as they now set foot into the corporate world.

At a time when the new gen is being swarmed with a wide range of technology gadgets, Srihari has managed to instill a sense of discipline and devotional ethics in his students keeping them away from distractions that seem to be the order of the day everywhere. His outstanding efforts to share his knowledge with them every morning over a long three decade period despite his odd office hours has been a great act of selfless service that he has rendered to our society.

Srihari's Best Prabhandham Student 
Sundararaman is one of the rare personalities in Madras. He has combined outstanding academic achievement with complete knowledge of our traditional scriptures. By the time he graduated in Commerce, he had completed his CA with very minimal coaching!!! And much prior to that, even before he completed his schooling, he had completed his course on Divya Prabhandham. It is no wonder that his Acharya Srihari considers him the best student when asked to single out someone from the last 30years.


He credits his Acharya Srihari for guiding him right through his teenage years.  Sundararaman wonders if there would be another Acharya like him. ‘Who would come back from office at 130am and then wake up every morning before 6am to teach his students for zero monetary benefit. And my Acharya did that for an entire decade just for the joy of seeing his students succeed and to spread the message of the Azhvaars.’

Sundararaman says that his Acharya was special in more ways than one. He had intricate knowledge of the Tamil language and was especially strong in grammar. And this really helped in the phonetics which is so important in the Prabhandham recital. His understanding of the meaning and the features of the entire 4000verses was very deep. Often, he went out of the way to explain the intricacies and nuances of different sets of verses. 


‘For example, I can never forget the way he taught us the Periya Thirumozhi verses relating to Therezhendur. One of the decads of Thiru Mangai Azhvaar’s praise on Therezhendur had him describing both the location of the agraharam as well as the paddy fields and lakes. My Acharya provided us great insights into how to identify the verses describing the streets and differentiate them from the ones describing the fields and ponds. I do not think any other Acharya in this age and time would go into such minute details to educate his students. We would have all been more than happy had he taught us just the recital of the Prabhandham. But he went way beyond simple recital and wanted us to become real experts.’

Sundararaman also remembers the unique manner in which Srihari taught them the Periya Thirumozhi verses on Thiruvali. ‘He shared some subtle points in identifying and remembering the verses. It is unlikely that any other Guru in this modern age would share such insights on the Prabhandham with his students.’

Throughout that period between the mid 90s and the mid 2000s, Srihari engaged all his students in introspection of the Prabhandham so much so that these students began loving his classes. He would not stop with the students just memorizing the verses. In between, he sent the students to Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur temples to expand their horizon. Almost everyone looked forward to the early morning class.

Sundararaman says with pride that his first batch of students can rank-up with any in the city in the understanding and recital of the Prabhandham and that any of them in his batch can recite the entire 4000 verses at any point of time. And for this, he says he owes it all to Srihari. He truly is one of a kind teacher.

Sundararaman’s mother remembers the way her son would wake up on his own and run to the class well before his Acharya arrived. Such was his love for the Prabhandham class.

His father S Padmanabhan, Sri Karyam at the Ahobila Mutt and HOD- Sanskrit, Madras University credits Srihari for his son’s progress on the Prabhandham front.  He says that his son was blessed to have been tutored by Srihari.


Srihari was a disciplinarian and very committed to sharing his knowledge with his students. He was a perfectionist. That helped a great deal in my son imbibing the same values. He would always be on time for the class and expected the students, too, to show the same kind of commitment. And that really had a positive effect on my son. The objective was to make him love the subject and my son began loving it right from the first instance of the subject. We never had to force this into him.’ says Padmanabhan.

Broken Walls, Falling Azhvaar idols, Shattered Vimana and Rats inside the Madapalli symbolize the current state of the temple

It is an ancient Divya Desam near Nagapattinam where interesting events marked Saint Poet Thirumangai Azhvaar’s stay. The Damodara Narayana Perumal Divya Desam in Thiru Kannangudi is part of the Pancha Krishna Kshetram and is seen as a South equivalent of the Pancha Dwaraka of the North.

The Lord of Thiru Kannangudi has been praised in each of the verses by Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Periya Thirumozhi as one who is seen in a grand standing posture. Also, from these verses, one gets to know the prosperity of this place in centuries gone by. Thiru Mangai Azhvaar describes Thiru Kannangudi as a place with huge mansions with walls that were so igh that they seemed to touch the moon. He praises the temple as being surrounded with ripe paddy fields, water tanks that were filled with different kinds of lilies, lotuses and many varieties of flowers and lush orchards that produced fruits such as bananas, jack fruits and mangoes among others. He also describes the place as being home to peacocks that flocked in big numbers and danced around the Lord.

Interesting Events
On his way back from Nagapattinam, a tired Thirumangai Azhvaar, who was carrying back gold to Srirangam, lay under a Tamarind tree at Thiru Kannangudi. Placing the gold in the pit there, Thirumangai Azhvaar asked the tree to wake him up if someone came there. The next morning when the owner of the plot arrived to resume work, the tamarind tree dropped all its leaves on Thirumangai Azhvaar to wake him up prompting Thirumangai to praise it as the ‘sleepless tree’.

When the two argued about the ownership of a land, Thirumangai Azhvaar defended himself in the local court saying his papers were in Srirangam and that he would leave in a day or two to get his papers. To this day, disputes in Thiru Kannangudi are believed to be unduly delayed and don’t find a quick solution.

Later when a thirsty Thirumangai Azhvaar walked up to the ladies near the well to ask for water, they refused as they were worried that he would get into a fight over the ownership of the well.  An angry Thiru Mangai Azhvaar pronounced a curse that the water would not fill up in the well. To this day, wells in Thiru Kannangudi are seen dried up. Even when it fills up, it tastes salty.

The Name Kannan Gudi
Pleased with Sage Vashista’s penance, Lord Krishna appeared before the sage in the form of a kid. While the Sage was immersed in thoughts of the Lord, Kannan picked up the butter kept in pooja, swallowed it in one go and gave Vashishta the run. With Vashishta giving him a chase, young Kannan ran fast until he came upon the rishis undergoing penance here. Explaining his hurry, Kannan wanted them to ask for one wish. By this time, Vashishta too had caught up with the Lord and realizing his true avatara, the sage fell at his feet and invoked his blessings to provide darshan in a standing posture at this place. Hence this place came to be called ‘Kannan Gudi’.

Unlike in other Divya Desams where Garuda is seen with folded hands, he is seen here with his hands across his chest.
Another unique feature at this temple is the similarity of the face of the Moolavar and Utsavar idols of Goddess, not seen in any other Divya Desam.

Pitiable state of the temple
The renovation activity of such a historic temple has been stalled for almost three years now. HR & CE had earlier sanctioned Rs. 50 Lakhs for the renovation. Private participants / devotees who had expressed interest and come forward to take up the renovation efforts have now stepped back as a result of the callous attitude of the Government officials.

Festivals including the 10 day Brahmotsavam in Chitrai, 10 day Maasi Maagam Utsavam, when the Lord goes on a long procession to the Sea and the Ramanuja Utsavam have been stopped pending the renovation.

The Perumal Vimana with beautiful sculptures is now in a dilapidated state with few of the exquisite sculptures falling off. 

The scenario at the Azhvaar Sannidhi is deplorable with the idols of the Muthal Azhvaars coming off the ground. Similar is the fate of Thiru Mazhisai Azhvaar and Nam Azhvaar. There are cracks on the walls of the Manavala Mamunigal Sannidhi and this could fall off anytime soon.

Similar is the state of Ramanuja’s Sannidhi where a 10 day Avathara Utsavam used to take place. Huge mound of mud has been lying in front of the sannidhi for many months now but there is no inkling of the resumption of the renovation activity.

There is also a plan to build a compound wall around the huge sacred Tank west of the temple. Measurements have been taken recently and one hopes that work will start soon.
                                                                                   
Rats inside the Madapalli
The sacred kitchen (Thiru Madapalli) is probably the worst hit. With the flooring caving in, it is shocking to see a big pit made by huge rats. These are seen running around all over the kitchen. Smaller rats have made this their ‘residence’ and are seen in large numbers, such is the state of the area where sacred food is made for the Lord every day.

Velukudi Krishnan’s Kinchitkaram Trust is taking care of the Nandavanam. However, there are challenges relating to that as well with the entry of goats causing damage to the garden.

There are private donars ready to support the renovation in full but they have been put off by the delay caused by the HR & CE officials.With the effort of the priest, a new silver coated Simhasana for the utsava deities has been organized, one that looks grand but that is the only Silver Lining.

Like the Pancha Dwaraka in the North, Thiru Kannangudi is one of the Pancha Krishna Kshetrams in the South. Such a historic temple is now in shambles and one hopes that the Government will release the requisite funds for the renovation exercise that has been long due. Also, it is hoped that they will take the support of like minded devotees and donars to complete the renovation that was kicked off three years ago.

How to reach Thiru Kannangudi
Thiru Kannangudi is about 10kms from Nagapattinam and just over 15kms from Thiruvarur. Buses ply every five minutes between Nagai and Thiruvarur bus. One can get down at Azhiyur, about 8 kms from Nagai. From there, auto will cost Rs. 30 to the temple.

Andal Good Omen Nachiyar Thirumozhi

Andal looks for the Good Omen to be united with her beloved and asks the 'Angel' to get the 'Final Formation' of the dotted lines in her favour!!!!

The fourth decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi provides insights into the astrological predictions referred to as 'Koodal Iyizhaithal'. Andal presents to us a historical system that was in vogue during her time where one looks at a set of lines to decide the fate of the lovers.
Historical Games and Life Predictions
Historically shells were used in a game through one of the two processes – either by putting them together in small groups or by drawing a number of concentric circles and seeing them in twos. If the final result ended in even number, it was seen as a Good Omen and the wishes of the lover was said to be fulfilled.

Andal in these verses addresses the angel and asks if the omens are good for her to unite with her beloved.

Koodal Iyizhaittal is a historical game played by young girls who were looking to be united with their beloved. By the end of the game based on the result, they get an indication on whether they would unite with their lover. This is a game of dots and lines drawn to see if the final formation ends in a good omen.

Andal begins with a description of the true devotees. She praises them as those who offer worship with folded hands to the Lord of TMC.

She says that if the Lord accepts her, she will be ever ready to offer service at his lovely feet. She invokes the blessings of the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai to ensure that the lines drawn will form the right concentric circles so it ends up as a good omen. Referring to the Lord as the bridegroom of Thiru Maliruncholai, she wonders if she will find a place in his bed room!!!

Praises the Bachelor Lord
In two of the verses, Andal refers to him as the handsome bachelor in his earlier Vamana Avatar who attended the sacrifice of Bali and then measured the earth and sky in easy strides. She tells the angel that if she deserves to be united with her beloved Krishna, it is the duty of the angel to join the lines in such a way so as to result in a good omen.
‘வாட்டமின்றி மகிழ்ந்துறை வாமனன்’

‘கொண்டக்கோலக்குறளுருவாய்ச்சென்று’

She refers to Thiru Venkatam as being amidst a forest and Thiru Kannapuram as a city. She asks if her Lord will come running and take her by the hand and if would come to embrace her. To this end, she calls upon the angel to ensure that the lines drawn total up to even numbers.

Valiant Acts one after another
Periyazhvar repeatedly described the valiant acts of Krishna in his Periyazhvar Thirumozhi. Andal too through this decad describes the many different acts of bravery of Krishna.

She praises him as one who even as a child chased the poisonous serpent Kaliya, then climbed the tree with ease and danced atop the hood earning him the praise of the divine dancer.

வாய்த்தகாளியன்மேல்நடமாடியகூத்தனார்

She also praises him as the one who killed the mad elephant Kuvalaya. She praises his achievements of uprooting the Maruda trees even while still learning the first steps to crawl, killing Kamsa using his own wicked tactics, the evil Sisupala as well as the killing of the bird, the 7 bulls - all in public view leaving everyone stunned as to his achievements even as a young child.  She says that it was her beloved who protected and saved elephant Gajendra at the time of distress.

About Mathura
She refers to Devaki as being beautiful and having lustrous eyes and Krishna’s father Vasudeva as being noble.

Mathura is described as a place with huge mansions. She wonders if her beloved will come to her house through these big buildings and grab her hand. With the hope of Krishna, who she describes as the ruler of Dwaraka, coming to Mathura and entering her house, she asks the angel, who she sees as the one who brings lovers together, to ensure that the lines end up as Good Omen. ‘It is you who brings together the lovers and hence help complete the lines in such a way that it ends up as a good omen.’

Anger and Love at the same time
She praises him as one who grazed cows without the slightest hesitation. She says that he is elusive to most but never thinks twice of residing in the hearts of lovers.
ஆவலன் புடையார்தம்மனத்தன்றி

He is the favourite among the beautiful cowherd Gopis, who adore his handsome personality, especially his curly locks. Through this decad, Andal recounts the songs of the cowherd girls who she says fight in anger with him but very quickly reconcile and fall in love with him again. She wants the lines drawn to fall in place and result in a good omen so as to unite with the beloved.

Andal Cuckoo Messenger

I haven't slept for many days - My Bones are melting, the Smile is gone, the red lips have become darker - Only you know the Pangs of Separation 


In the previous decad, Andal looked out for positive omens to see if the indications are right for her to unite with her beloved. Now in this fifth decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi, she calls on the cuckoo to take her love messages to her Lord. 

Andal dedicates an entire decad in the Nachiyar Thirumozhi to showcase the role of cuckoo as a messenger.Through these verses, she has a personal communication with the cuckoos directing them to pass on her love message to her beloved.

For long she says she has been longing to unite with him but he has evaded her. She has been bubbling with excitement and her entire body had risen with energy but in recent times her soul has been tormented with fading hopes. She asks the cuckoo to not go into hiding too just like her Lord and directs the cuckoo to call her lord who she identifies as one with conch and chakra and mace. In return for this effort, she says that the cuckoo will earn her lifelong gratitude and promises to place her head at the cuckoo’s feet.

She narrates to the cuckoo as to how she lost her bangles in her love life with her lord. And she finds this unfair. She is focussing solely on the Lord but the cuckoo stands in front of her pulling her remaining bangles.

Praising the Cuckoos as ones residing in Punnai, Kurukatti, Nalal and Serundi Groves, Andal wants her beloved Lord to be informed of her love plight. She compares her current state of mind to the Koel’s mind and states that it is the Koel who will be able to understand the pangs of separation from the beloved. 

புன்னைகுருக்கத்திஞாழல்செருந்திப்
பொதும்பினில்வாழங்குயிலே

She  provides clues to the Cuckoo to locate her Lord. Shes says that her Lord can be identified as one with beautiful coral lips in Sapphire hue, with a Garuda banner and with a white Conch (Andal describes in detail the greatness of the Conch later in the Nachiyar Thirumozhi).

She goes on to describe further her current state of mind in the next verse. She is losing patience and has now become a bit angry as well as her beloved is simply enjoying her dying dance and not responding to her cries.  She is saddened that he does not appear before her.

உள்ளம்புகுந்துஎன்னைநைவித்துநாளும்
உயிர்பெய்துகூத்தாடும்காணும்

She turns her attention to the cuckoo and wants the cuckoo to sing songs inviting her Lord to come soon. She asks the Cuckook not to continue to sip the honey from the Shenbagam flowers. She asks the cuckoo not to evade her with sweet little talk and directs her to go immediately to the Lord of Venkatam.  However just when the cuckoo was seemingly ready to leave, she found the buzzing bees sucking honey from the flowers and lost herself in that sight.

What Love does to one!!!
Describing Srivilliputhur as a place with huge swarm of swans that graceful flap in pairs, Andal recounts her story of the past few days. She cannot find her Lord coming from any direction. Her bones are melting in anxiety. She is in total sorrow.  She has not slept for many days. She showcases her misery as being as large as the ocean and says that she herself is like a small life boat in that large sea.

துன்பக்கடல்புக்குவைகுந்தனென்பதுஓர்
தோணிபெறாதுஉழல்கின்றேன்

She describes her fading personality inflicted by the endless wait for her lover. She has lost her smile, her red lips have become darker, her soul is agitating in grief and her breasts have become less beautiful and are rising yearning for his loving touch. 

She questions the Cuckoo as to what she gains by thus hiding and not reaching out to her Lord and passing on her Love message to him. And says that it will indeed be a virtuous deed carried out by the Cuckoo if she helps this Lover unite with her beloved.

Bribes the Cuckoo
Having requested and pleaded for a while, Andal lures the Cuckoo with an incentive. Reminding the cuckoo of her lack of sleep, she says that she has been yearning to see the golden feet of the Lord. She bribes the koel that if she does this helping act, she will be friend her like her parrot and will give her milk and sweet morsel.

Praising the cuckoo as one that rests in a corner of the bunch of flowers, she promises to bow in respect if the cuckoo helps her unite with her beloved.

தலையல்லால்கைம்மாறிலேனே

You will get to know our love secrets
Andal reveals to the cuckoo that she is sharing many of her love stories. He is the one with the special Saranga bow and an ideal match for her and that that the two of them share many secrets. She addresses the cuckoo that is currently sipping nectar from the mango tree and asks her to go and call her Lord quickly. As a reward for the helping efforts, Andal promises to allow the cuckoo to watch her secret engagements with the beloved perched atop the tree.

From request to bribe to threat
Having requested and motivated the cuckoo through the initial set of verses, Andal seems to have lost her patience towards the end as she moves on to now threatens the cuckoo providing him with just two choices for him to survive in those groves –

'Bring the Lord to me and secure back my lost bangles or else there will be no place for you in those beautiful nectar sipping groves'.

She is shocked that even the moon light and the breeze are beginning to hurt her in her times of separation when she is being denied the opportunity of service to the Lord. And to add to her fury the Cuckoo continues to remain seated in front of her without taking her love message to the Lord. 
'If he does not fly to her beloved she warns the cuckoo that he will be driven out of those groves.'

Will Abhinav Mukund Step down as TN Captain?

Bowled out twice in two days for sub 70 score at Dindigul, Tamil Nadu has been knocked out of this year's Ranji Championship 

Earlier this year, after losing the final to Karnataka in a miserable way, Captain Abhinav Mukund pointed out that it was no shame losing to a side like Karnataka. It was one of the most disappointing comments made by a TN captain especially given that TN v Karnataka for many decades has been one of the battles that players from both sides have fought with pride.

TN was supposedly a strong team on paper and while Karnataka were on a roll, this kind of a comment from a TN captain was poor.

Just over 6months later, TN has had a shocking season with a 5 session loss to Punjab at home knocking them out of the Ranji season this afternoon.  Turning tracks from day one combined with two wash outs have sent TN packing.

Nevertheless it will be worth looking back at the contributions made by the stars in the team. Abhinav Mukund who kind of stayed away from the captaincy to focus on his batting has had a terrible first full year as captain with several single digit scores including many ducks!!!!

Dinesh Karthik  has struggled as well except for a couple of big knocks. Prasanna, as has been his role, has tried his best to pull together the middle/ late middle order. Some of the newcomers into the side Indrajit, Vijay Shankar and Malolan have had their share of good knocks but consistency has been missing overall.

The bowling unit has largely depended on turning tracks but that has backfired on a couple of occasions including the one this week in Dindigul.

Coach M Sanjay has gone on record hitting out at the TN batsmen for their failure at Dindigul in the last league match that concluded this afternoon with TN crashing to defeat.

It is co-incidental that far away in Patiala (the home town of Rajwinder Galu who picked up 6wickets in the 1st innings) the TN U 19 team crashed to a huge innings defeat being bowled out for below 100 in both innings after conceding over 500runs. The seniors have met with almost a similar fate just a day later being bowled out in the 60s in both the innings in just one session in each innings.

A former TN all rounder and coach has been saying for a few years now that the system of first division league cricket has to be reviewed and made really competitive so it stands them in good stead when they go into the Ranji season.

Around the same period, Bombay has registered a couple of amazing come back wins fighting their way through tough times. Karnataka has not depended on doctored pitches to win matches.

It is time that TNCA took a serious call on the way it looks at its league system and makes it an enabler to get quality cricketers into their fray. Like Badrinath said a few years ago, a lot of them have had it far too easy in the last few years.

Flat tracks and runs and turning tracks and wickets have been two extremes but all too familiar scenarios in both local league cricket and Ranji cricket for TN.

With the poor season that he has had, it might be time for Abhinav to resign as captain taking the responsibility for the loss both as a batsman as well as the captain. It might be a call too soon but he might be better off focusing on his batting and getting some runs back. In hindsight he may have done well to postpone the acceptance of his captaincy by a few more years!!!!

Build the team for the Future
Soon after Tamil Nadu's shocking defeat in the final league match, Former Ranji Captain VB Chandrasekar ( TN and Goa), in his typical belligerent style, spoke candidly to prtraveller on the way forward for TN cricket and 'why we are missing the bus'.

VBC watched the first match of the season from the commentary box makes an important observation. He wanted the team to stop this thought process of 'desperately want to qualify' / 'want to win the Championship'.  STOP THE THOUGHT OF QUALIFYING, he says.

VBC suggested that the team should instead focus on playing good quality cricket and the score board will automatically take care of itself. He says currently the scoreboard pressure is clearly telling on the players.

TNCA should focus on building the team for the next 2-3 years and away from the qualifying mindset. Based on what he saw in the first match of the season, he says the team has potential to build on but wonders as to how one could lose after a lead of 100+. It is all in the mind. And if you perpetually have such rank turners from the first morning, you are taking away the opportunity for your batsmen to build their patience which is such an important ingredient for a quality batsman.

Also, he is keen that the team plays on quality pitches that offer everyone an opportunity to showcase their talent. Currently, on turning tracks, the TN players are losing out on building the patience levels with the batsman not knowing if they will last the next over. And even players like Dinesh and Abhinav are becoming a casualty in this spinner friendly tracks.

One of the important facets of batting is to have the ability to build an innings. That aspect is sorely missing and he attributes that to the kind of pitches that are being prepared.

He says that in his four decades of watching /playing cricket he has rarely seen Bombay prepare such wickets. Neither has Karnataka. Also, he says that in his time very rarely did matches end in under two days which is kind of becoming a normal phenomenon here these days.

VBC has a strong message for the cricket administration in TN -Prepare Quality wickets, build the team for the long term, take your eyes away from Qualifying and the Championship. Let that be the outcome of the cricket played. And you will suddenly see the players fulfilling their potential
(VBC should know that well for in his playing days, he helped groom and bloom the inherent talent  in several TN players).

Quality of Batting at Dindigul was Shocking - Chairman of TN Selection Committee

One can sense the frustration in S Shararth. For a 100 matches, he gave his life for the state in the 90s and 2000s. And to find his state side being bowled out twice for 60s is something he is just not able to digest.

Hitting out at his players, Sharath told prtraveller that it is time to stop blaming everyone around and to take the onus on themselves. 'You cannot blame coach, selectors and administrators all the time.'

It is time for some soul searching among the players. They have to take accountability and responsibility and take pride in bringing laurels to the state.The Mindset has to change. Where are the fighting qualities, he asks.

A disappointed Chairman of Selectors said 'I am just too shocked in the way they got out in both innings. This is just not on. We have to pull up our socks.' 

On Abhinav Mukund, Sharath said that he has had a pretty dull season with the bat. He will be the first person to agree that they have played poor cricket. The team generally looked up to him as a star player but he did not get the runs this season that we all expected him to get. I still back him.and  am confident he will come back. He has just gone through a bad patch. He is too good a player. Otherwise he cannot average 50+.'

He pointed out that J Koushik has been one plus point for TN. He also had words of praise for DT Chandrasekar, Aswin Crist and Mohammad. But he refused to name a single batsman when asked if he was happy with the performance of any of the batsmen.

When probed further, he said that 'his silence answers the question.'

The most popular decad of the Nachiyari Thirumozhi provides insights into the typical happenings at a wedding event with bride Andal sharing her wedding dreams with her friends visualising the likely sequence of events.

At a Vaishnavite Wedding, ‘Seer Paadal’ is one of the important events during which these sacred verses from Varanam Aiyaram are recited. The Bride and Bridegroom sit opposite to each other with the relatives from both the families around them. While they roll the sacred coconuts towards each other, the relatives from both the families are formally introduced.

About the mood in her town
Andal is all excited. She visualises her beloved making his entry. The entire town is in festive mood, decorated all around. Everyone seems to be carrying golden vessels. It is time to welcome the handsome bridegroom into her city.

Andal describes the bridegroom (her beloved) entering the town in a most majestic way – to the beat of the drums and accompanied by 1000s of mighty royal elephants- through the streets in a lovely procession. She finds him like a roaring lion under a canopy.

Are they a suitable match?
It is all getting ready for the bridal ceremony tomorrow. Indra and celestials also land up from their heavenly abodes for a discussion with her parents. They find this a suitable match and stamp their approval to make her the bride. And the in law Anthiri then comes forward to adorn the bride with heaps of flowers and the beautiful wedding saree as well as the sacred garland.

The Sacred Prayers
It is time for the Prayers. The sages are present and start chanting the rituals on a high pitch that sends positive vibrations all around. The sacred water brought from the ‘Four Quarters’ is sprinkled and hymns recited with purity and devotion. And the event was now almost upon her, thus visualised Andal. The moment of tying the sacred thread on the wrist and exchanging the garland, of flowers with the pure and chaste Lord had arrived.

The noise levels in the entire town picked up. Drum beats, blowing of conches signified the festive mood of the people in celebration of her impending wedding.

To welcome him into her town, many young girls went out with divine lamps. Canopy was put up at all corners. It seemed to be studded with pearls and gems. And then she heard the earth tremble and knew instantly that the king of Mathura had arrived for the entire place resonated with the resounding steps of his sandaled feet.

The First Touch
And then she at last had a chance to have a glimpse of her lord who was to hold her hands shortly. To the huge beat of drums and the blowing of conches (she later in Nachiyar Thirumozhi dedicates an entire decad praising the greatness and speciality of the Conch), Lord Madhusudhan came to hold her by his hand that sends exciting love waves all over her.

And then she played out the next wedding ritual.

Around the Sacrificial Fire and the first touch
It was now time to be at the sacrificial fire. Learned priests chanted the sacred Vedas that seemed to vibrate in great harmony. They spread out the sacred darbhha grass and laid out the figs and firewood on it to light the sacrificial fire. And her lord came there like a raging elephant.

Her joy knew no bounds when he held her hand to go around the sacred fire. She was all excited by this first touch of his.

After having held her hand, her beloved who she praises as one with red lotus hands and as the sole refuge in our lives, now sent her into rapturous love as he held her leg with his soft red hands and placed it on the sacred grind stone.

Her brothers who she describes as being bright faced and with bow like eyebrows came up and took her around and made her stand the kindled fire. They took her hand and placed it over the Lord’s hands that she describes as being huge like the lion (an avatar that he had taken earlier). And the moment her hand touched the Lord’s, she went into a tizzy. And then they got ready grains to be poured into the sacrificial fire.

Beautifying the Bride
And she visualises the activities surrounding the beautification process. They are likely to smear her with saffron and sandal paste ahead of the pompous ride through the city streets. As she dreams of this ride, she says there are no words to describe the event of the two jointly mounting the elephant.

The couple go around for the blessings
Seated atop the huge elephant alongside him, she was on an unmatched high in life, a state of mind that she had never before encountered.  And finally the two had a holy bath through the sprinkling of sacred water on them as part of the consecration.

The story of the Conch is a great message to the devotee that with purity and sincerity of devotion one can gain a share in the Lord’s heart

Andal praises the Conch as being Pure (white) in personality, Great in achievements, Noble in character and Big at heart

In the Nalayira Divya Prabhandham, Azhvaars have praised the Lord in his various Avatars, his personality and his achievements. Thirumangai Azhvaar has praised his presence in many different temples and provides insights into those locations as it existed 1000s of years ago (i.e during his period). The Lord’s personality and valour have seen praised and described.

The 7th decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi is unique in that it is the only one in the Divya Prabhandham where an Azhvaar has dedicated exclusively to one of the Lord’s weapons. Andal envies the Conch’s position of being ever present with the Lord, especially in light of her not being able to unite with the Lord. Through this decad, Andal brings to us the special relationship between the Lord and the Conch Panchajanya. Given the conch’s close association with her beloved, she makes detailed and probing queries about the Lord.

Andal praises the Conch as being Pure (white) in personality, great in achievements, noble in character and big at heart. 

Andal begins by praising the pure personality of the Conch as signified by the (white) colour. Andal enquires about the Lord’s lips as to whether it will really taste sweet and if his mouth smells of camphor and has the fragrance of Lotus.
 (At the Srirangam temple, camphor is thrown on Lord Namperumal on Kaisika Dwadasi morning in a special event on his way back to his sanctum after the Kaisika Ekadasi Utsavam).

Despite being born at the lowly ocean and being brought up in Panchajana’s filthy body, Andal praises the conch’s astounding rise to the top of the world to be ever present in the left hand of the lord. There have been many who grew up alongside the conch in the ocean. They have all remained unsung and unheard. But the conch has had the special privilege of being on the lord’s lips. The roar of the conch is enough to shake the entire world. It is the Conch’s announcement with his deadly noise that shakes the spirit of the Asuras leaving them dumb stuck.

We have an opportunity in this life to rise above the filth and follow the Dharmic path.
  
She then compares the beauty of the Conch to the full moon that has risen tall behind the clouds and high above the Udayagiri Mountain. Andal says that his presence on the hand of Lord Vasudeva of Mathura places him on a special status and gives him a towering personality.  Is that not enough to show the nobility of the Conch?

Secret chat with the Lord?
Conch is the symbol of sound. If one needs to reach out to the lord, it is the Conch that we need to approach for he is the closest to the Lord’s ears. One always gets the feeling that the Conch is ever whispering a secret into the Lord’s ears and that our messages are conveyed to the Lord by him on our behalf.

He is ever present in the shoulder of the Lord and there seems to be no space in this world where he is not present. Let alone mere mortals like us, not even the great Lord Indra would envy the  Conch’s fortune. Even Indra cannot equal the conch and his proximity to the Lord.

சந்திரமண்டலம்போல்தாமோதரன்கையில்
அந்தரமொன்றின்றிஏறிஅலன்செவியில்

மந்திரம்கொள்வாயேபோலும்வலம்புரியே
இந்திரனும்உன்னோடுசெல்வத்துக்கேலானே

There were many others with different features and personalities born in the sea – some friends and others foes. But none has the resplendent feature of the Panchajanya. Though born in the same sea, this conch is special because of his association with the Lord.

மன்னாகிநின்றமதுசூதன்வாயமுதம்பண்ணாலும்

The conch is indeed privileged that he does not have to travel a great distance for a sacred bath (in the 2nd decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal describes the distance she and her friends have to travel to have a bath every morning before dawn). Being ever present in the Lord’s Lips, the conch is ever bathed. The conch has no reason to go on sacred pilgrimage for a permanent place has been found with the Lord. Instead of going around like mere mortals for a sacred bath the conch because of the permanent residency in the Lord has the sanctified sacred holy water from the Lord’s nectar mouth.

Praising the Lord’s Conch as being the best among Conches, Andal calls them a beautiful lot.

Comparing the conch’s presence on the shoulder of the Lord to the Swan, she says that just like a swan that gracefully rests on a lake after sipping nectar from the fresh lotus flowers, the conch’s ever residing stature on the Lord’s shoulder gives it a glowing personality.

And then she turns envious of the conch!!!!

Conch’s Food every day

To sustain himself, the conch consumes the nectar from the Lord’s lips every day. And when it is time to sleep, the Conch finds the Lord’s hands as the resting place. Is this not far too difficult for the young and beautiful girls to digest for they are ever longing to be with the Lord. Will they not rise in protest? They too want a place in the Lord’s heart but this beautiful conch has a place of rest in the Dark Lord’s Palm.

16000 girls are in the queue and you enjoy exclusivity!!!!!

There are 16000 (6000 celestial beauties+10 thousand other damsels) beautiful young girls awaiting their turn to taste the Lord’s lips. While they are all wondering as to whether they will ever get their chance, the conch is enjoying an exclusive share of the Lord’s Lips. Andal questions the conch if this is not unfair and whether this will not result in them quarrelling with the conch. Girls are jealous of his special status accorded by the Lord. Feeling aggrieved, the young girls are likely to find faults in him for this exclusive rights.

செல்வப்பெருஞ்சங்கே

In this 9th verse, Andal refers to the episode relating to Narakasura. When the mother of the asura pleaded with the Lord, he let go Narakasura’s son and handed over the entire kingdom to him. During the process, he drove out all the elephants except one. The 16000 ladies who were under captive pleaded to be freed from the Asura and sought to be united with their beloved Lord. Krishna took them all to Dwaraka and married them.

The story of the Conch

After completion of tutelage under Sage Sandipini, Krishna paid his Guru Dakshina by restoring to the sage his long lost son in the same form when he was lost years ago. For this, he had to undertake a battle with the demon inside the ocean. Out of the bones recovered from the battle was born Panchajanya, Krishna’s famous conch that he used through the war as his trumpet.

Thus born to a demon in the ocean, Panchajanya had grown to this high privileged status of being with the Lord. It is a clear message to the devotee that with purity and sincerity of devotion one can gain a share in the Lord’s heart. True devotion to God is a link between our path of action and knowledge.

Panchajanya is unique in that it is separated from all others in the huge seas and found a place in the Lord’s hand. Panchajanya is different from all other conches living eternally in peace resting in the Lord’s palms. The conch has the privilege of ever enjoying the nectar for food from his lips. In his hands, the conch sleeps.  Thus, the wealth of the conch being with the Lord is just unmatched.

Taking her message to the Lord through the Clouds
First it was the Cuckoo, then the Conch and Now its the Beautiful Dark Clouds

Having earlier addressed the Cuckoo seeking help to attain her beloved and then praising the special position of the Conch and making enquiries with him about the Lord, Andal now engages with the cloud. Through the Nachiyar Thirumozhi verses, Andal showcases the different modes of communication adopted in those days to reach the Lord.


She enquires if the Lord accompanies the dark cloud that spreads the entire sky like a canopy. With her breasts swollen out of anxiety she poses a question to the clouds if the Lord finds pleasure in destroying a lady’s beautiful personality. While the dark clouds are bringing in streams of water at Venkatam, tears of sorrow are rolling down her cheeks one to her bosom. She asks if seeing his beloved in such a sorrowful state will bring him any fame!!!

Cool Breeze of the night impacting her
Praising the clouds as raining precious pearls, she enquires on the latest news about her beloved and his well being. She is waiting for the cool breeze of the night to come and give her some comfort. And then the fever of love has beseeched her entire body and through the night the cool breeze is adding to the vigour of the flame that has been lit by the oil. However, she stands waiting for him unmindful of this torrid chilly state looking for solace in him.

Losing her physical features
Andal provides insights into how women can lose their personality as a result of the unresponsive attitude of their beloved.

She has been missing the Lord so much that she informs the clouds that she has lost her lustre, colour, bangles, senses and ever her sleep. Her longing for the Lord and the absence of communication from him have all of a sudden taken away her beautiful personality. The grief caused by the Lord has resulted in a lot of her physical assets deserting her one by one.

Her special features in her body, bangles, bracelets and her peace have all gone. She asks the clouds if she can hold on to her soul singing his praise for a little while longer and if the clouds will share her current state with the Lord and help them unite.

She wants to know from the beautiful rain bearing clouds as to how much longer will she have to keep up her high flying spirits that seem to be slowly fading.

Praising her beloved as one whose chest is resplendent with the presence of Sri, Andal directs the clouds to inform her Lord that her breasts are waiting for his embrace.

Heavy Rains as a communication message
Andal directs the dark clouds to hover over Venkatam and share this message with her Lord. And then getting a little angry and a bit frustrated, she wants to use the rain as a communication tool to pass on the message of her anxiety. She asks the clouds to gather dark over Venkatam and pour in buckets there so the Lord understands her woes.

What about my bangles that he took
Praising the clouds as one congregating in big waves and rising high in the sky and then resulting in torrential downpour, she wants the beautiful dark clouds to ask her beloved if he will return the bangles that he took away from her (like she did with the cuckoos). The remaining bangles are sliding down as the hands have become thinner. With the sadness that has been gripping her of late. And the only reason she has managed to survive is because of the fact the she continues to recite his names.

She compares her current dry status to the wood apple that has been dried by fruit flies hovering over them. Praising the cloud as covering the entire landscape of sky, she requests the clouds to share her current deplorable state of ailing with her Lord.

நலங் கொண்ட நாரணற்க்கு என் நடலை நோய் செப்புமினே 

Seeking the Lord’s Love
She wants the clouds to share her desire to achieve complete surrender at the Lord’s feet. And she is seeking union with him just for a day so his loving embrace will erase the saffron smeared on her breasts. She wants the clouds to communicate to the Lord that her breasts are still young and yearning for his loving embrace.

Spring Goes, Monsoon Arrives
And then months pass. It is now monsoon time. Referring to the clouds as dark monsoon clouds, she says that her hopes have fallen apart in recent times like a withered leaves that fall to the ground following a heavy rain. Similar to the falling leaves of Erukku plant that are lying scattered in dust on the ground, Andal shares her sadness with the clouds saying that her hopes too are fading and that her body has drooped in recent times due to the tiredness of waiting for his arrival. She asks the clouds if there is any hope for her at all.

With the monsoon having arrived, Andal now compares the magnitude of the clouds to a huge mad elephant that is roaring and raging in anger. Hitting out angrily at the Lord, she threatens him that the world will lose the reverence for him if he continues his current attitude. He had promised refuge to his true devotees but has failed to keep his word. He will be seen as the one responsible for her death arising out of misery of not being able to attain him.

What happens to Devotees' belief in Him
She shares her lonely feeling with the clouds stating that she seeks refuge only in him. And how then can he let her down. The blame that he deserted a loving girl will ever be cast on him by the people of this world. Despite her sincere meditation, she has not heard from him. She has not received even a word of solace. His message that he offers protection may be deemed as untrue in the future, if she commits suicide. And that will bring him a bad name from his devotees across the world.

In several of these verses in NT, Andal showcases the different approaches that can be adopted to reach out to the Lord and instils confidence in us that even birds and clouds can be addressed to communicate our messages to the Lord provided we have true devotion.

Lures the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai with 100 pots of butter and sweet morsel if he accepts her love
In memory of Andal’s promise, on the 27th day of Margazhi, 100 pots of Akkarai Vadisil is spread out and offered by Andal to Lord Sundararaja Perumal at Azhagar Koil 


Both Andal and Periyazhvar had special devotion to and closeness with the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai. In the ninth decad of Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal praises the garden of Thiru Maliruncholai, presenting the scenario there during her days of waiting patiently for the Lord to arrive.

It is a joyful mood all around in the huge groves. Red insects fly everywhere. Elephants are playing happily with each other. Mullai creepers and Pata flowers are enjoying a fully bloomed state.

But she bemoans the fact that her desire for her Tulasi garland has left her in this unbearable state while insects and animals and even flowers are enjoying thus in the groves of Thiru Maliruncholai.

The dark Karuvilai flowers bring her memories of the dark Lord. And for the third time in Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal once again brings the point of her beloved taking away her bangles.

The 5 Sinners of Maliruncholai!!!!
She refers to the singing Cuckoos, dancing Peacocks, the beautiful Karuvilai, the fresh Kala Fruits and the multi-coloured Kaya Flowers as the 5 sinners of Thiru Maliruncholai for they are enjoying life there in all happiness while she is in a troubled state waiting restlessly for her Lord.

Lakes were deep with Red Lotuses found in large numbers reminder her of the Lord’s Lotus eyes. Dark Beetles that were sitting in big numbers in the tall groves reminded her of the Dark Lord. She is unable to bear these reminders and is missing him badly.

Thiru Maliruncholai was abound with Kongu trees but unfortunately like the drooping strings of Konrai flowers, Andal's hopes too are fading and she wonders if she will ever again hear the twang of the Saranga bow and the conch.

100s of 1000 of Pots
She promises 100 pots of fresh butter that same day and 100 pots of morsel cooked in milk and special ghee and will fill it to the brim. Will he accept these and unite with her.

And then excited at the prospect of being with him, she lures him with more. If he accepts to come immediately and consume the butter, she promises to offer him one hundred 1000 times more of these and also promises to serve all of these to her beloved with her own hands

As has been her state in recent times, she wonders if the Lord would come and meet with her for he is enjoying his own fragrant state in the huge groves of Thiru Maliruncholai. Will he find time to reside in her lonely heart?

Early Morning Signals
And then as she wakes up the next morning, she is enlightened with some positive coos. The black birds sung tunes of the Lord of mountain groves, the king of dwaraka and the Lord who slept on fig leaf during the deluge. Was this an indication of the things to follow, she wondered in happiness, for birds are believed to foretell a likely event. And this sent positive vibes in Andal and renewed her hopes of uniting with the Lord.

Andal shares her grief with the Flowers, Koels, Peacocks, Rain and the Ocean

Like her father’s praise in the Periyazhvar Thirumozhi of the different flowers adorned by the Lord, Andal too praises the flowers. But she addresses them with sorrow. Through the verses, she follows the praise of the flowers with an expression of disappointment at not being able to meet with her beloved.


Starting off with the Dark Kodal flowers that she compares with her dark hued Lord, she continuously makes enquiries about her Lord. She wants the Kantal flowers to take her to the Lord. Else she will be left alone in the company of the dead and consigned to the place where He is not remembered!!!!

மேல்தோன்றியபூக்காள்மேலுலகங்களின்மீதுபோய்
மேல்தோன்றும்சோதிவேதமுதல்வர்வலங்கையில்

TWO TONGUED!!!
She compares the Kovai flowers and the red berries to the red lips of her Lord. She says that she feels dreaded of the Lord’s red lips and of the shame that she has shed!!! She complains that  since the time of her birth, her Lord seems to have become two tongued referring to him not reaching out to her despite promising to take care of the sincere prayers of the devotees.

The Mullai flowers she says are ones with a beautiful white smile. She tells them that if his promises are not being fulfilled and turning out to be false, then even her birth in this world may be considered a fictitious one ‘I too was never born in this world’!!!!

சொல்லும்பொய்யானால்நானும்பிறந்தமைபொய்யன்றே

Positive with the Koels
With the koels, she turns a little positive. While she currently finds their songs dull and gloomy given her mind set, she promises them that if the Lord comes back to her on his Garuda Vahana, the two of them can sit at this same place and sing happy soul stirring songs.

I am a Pauper now without the Lord
Addressing the Peacocks she praises them as beautiful dancers with appealing feathers and finds their steps to be quite graceful. While she is in such tearful state missing him, he is happily reclining and relaxing on the Serpent hood. Further appreciating their dance, she says she has nothing to offer them for their beautiful performance as the Lord has looted everything from her and left her a pauper. And then she provides a beautiful comparison of her current state.

MELTED (IN LOVE) LIKE A WAX
She has become empty just like a metal caster casing his model with clay and melting out the wax inside. Her beloved has melted her life by entering her mind and heart and she is feeling like a wax inside an earthen mould.

Addressing the dark rain cloud, she asks if she will pour all over her and cast the Lord’s image in her heart for ever.

மழையேமழையேமண்புறம்பூசிஉள்ளாய்நின்று
மெழுகூற்றினாற்போலூற்றுநல்வேங்கடுதுள்நின்ற
அழகர்பிரான்தம்மையென்னெஞ்சத்தகப்பட

She then turns her attention to the ocean and explains that the Lord has taken over her completely similar to how he churned the ocean and took out the nectar. She wants the ocean to communicate her love and her current state of life of sorrow to the Lord as he is her only solace in life.

Thiruvarur Thyagaraja Temple

Foremost and Largest among Saivite Temples
Praised by all Four Great Saint Poets
The Birth place of Somaskandar and the foremost among the temples praised by Saivite Saint Poets, the Thyagaraja temple in the heart of Thiruvarur is the largest Saivite temple in Tamil Nadu with 9 huge Gopurams, 5 Prakaras 108 Lingams and 54 Vimanas.  The temple tank and the temple chariot are both huge and special features at the temple. The temple represents Sand among the Pancha Bhootha Sthalams.

It was here at this temple that the famous Saint Poet Sundarar got his right eye (He got his left eye at Kanchipuram). It was also here that Lord Shiva walked for Sundarar (The only other temple where a similar event happened was at the Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple).

There are several inscriptions dating back over a 1000 years on the walls of the inner and outer prakaras.  Just under a 1000 years ago, there were 56 festivals celebrated every year in a grand manner during the rule of the Chozhas. Vasantha Utsavam is celebrated now in a grand manner in memory of the legend relating to Manmatha, the God of Love.

Thyagaraja’s idol
Lord Vishnu took the idol back to Parkadal and held him in his chest and performed pooja even while in his yogic state. Once when an asura continuously troubled the Devas, Indra sought Vishnu’s help in Parkadal. Vishnu handed him the idol of Thyagaraja and asked him to perform pooja to this idol to help him in his battle with the asuras. With this, the troubles for Indra went away.

Later when another asura troubled him, Vishnu informed Indra to seek the help of Chozha King Musukuntha as the asura had obtained the boon of being killed only by humans and that the king.  Musukuntha was also a great Saivite Devotee.

Indra had kept the idol in a big temple in the Indra Loga. Thanks to the King’s help, the asura was trounced. A delighted Indra took Musukunta to his abode. There when Musukuntha found the idol of Thyagaraja, an invisible voice directed him to take the idol to Thiruvarur.

After having taken him around, Indra offered a boon to the king for helping him win. The king asked for the idol leaving Indra stunned. That night, Indra asked sculptor Vishwakarma to make 6 similar idols. The next day, Indra offered the king any of the 6 idols hoping that the king would not be able to distinguish the real one and would take one of the 6 that were created the previous night.

Thanks to his true devotion, as he stood in front of the original idol, Musukuntha Chozha sensed that this was the original one. Delighted with the sincerity of the king’s devotion to Lord Shiva, Indra handed him all the 7 idols. Musukuntha made his way to Thiruvarur in a Chariot procession and celebrated with a grand festival.

Saptha Vidanga Kshetram
He took the other 6 idols and installed it at Thiru Kolili, Thiru Kaaraayil, Thiru Maraikkadu, Thiru Vaaimoor, Thiru Nallaru and Thiru Nagai. These 7 are referred to as Saptha Vidanga Kshetram.

Thiru Navukarasar in his Devaram song states that Musukuntha stayed in Thiru Nallur (near Papanasam) and then passed through Patteeswaram, Manakkal, Thalichathangudi before arriving in Thiruvarur where he built the temple and installed the idol of Thyagaraja (http://prtraveller.blogspot.in/2015/04/thiru-nallur-sundareswarar-temple.html).

At the entrance to the Thyagaraja Sannidhi, there is a beautiful sculpture of Musukuntha Chozha in memory of this event. There is also a sculpture of Indra.

The Lord’s dance is special here at Thiruvarur and presents the true philosophical meaning of each of his steps.  18 musical instruments are used to praise Lord Thyagaraja at different pooja times ( earlier it used to be 21)

The story of Musukuntha
Once while Shiva and Parvati were resting in the groves of Kailasam, a male monkey kept throwing Vilva leaves on them. This irritated Parvati who was about to curse the monkey when Shiva intervened. He reminded her that it was Shivarathri that day and the monkey had indeed performed a divine deed by placing Vilva leaves on them. Thus, a likely curse turned into a blessing and the two. Pleased with this, the male monkey requested that he be born with a monkey face in memory of his previous birth. Also, he asked if he could be born as a great devotee of Lord Shiva.  This was Musukuntha Chozha who ruled the Chozha kingdom with Karuvurai as his capital.

Manmatha’s Birth
It was here that Goddess Lakshmi undertook penance invoking the blessings of Lord Shiva. The severity of the penance is seen from the fact of standing on water and on hot sand in the summer. Pleased with the penance, Shiva, Devi and their son appeared before Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi and blessed them with a child. However, Uma Devi was upset that Vishnu had ignored her presence and cursed that the new born will also see death from the same person (Lord Shiva) who blessed his birth.

A saddened Vishnu asked sculptor Viswakarma to create an idol similar to the one who appeared before him. This was Somaskanda and he offered his prayer to this idol. The three of them appeared again and a pleased Uma Devi said that while the curse will have to be fulfilled, she will bring him back again and will make him the leader of the army. He was to be the God of Love.

Vasantha Utsavam is one of the most special festivals at the Thiruvarur temple. Manmatha who knitted flowers for the Lord had grown arrogant and was reduced to ashes by Lord Shiva’s eyes as per the earlier curse of Uma Devi. Rathi invoked the blessings of Uma Devi who then provided Rathi with an exclusive darshan of Manmatha (for her alone).  Delighted at this, the two celebrated by creating a festival for Lord Thyagaraja in Panguni invoking his blessings. In his memory is celebrated the Vasantha Utsavam.

Lord’s right foot – 2 days a year
Two days in a year, the right foot of the Lord can be seen – on Panguni Uthiram and Margazhi Thiruvathirai. On these days, Uma Devi’s left foot can be seen. At Chidambaram, on Margazhi Thiruvathirai, the Lord’s left foot can be seen.

Chitrai Prayers and the reward
In the 2nd prakara is the sannidhi for Aada Kechchuvram. Vishnu, Brahmma and Indra invoked the blessing of this Lord. Belief is that those who offer their sincere prayers to this Lord on Chitrai Krishna Paksha Chaturdasi will be blessed to attain the status equivalent to Indra.

All four great Saivite Saint Poets have sung praise of the Lord at this temple. This is also the temple with the highest amount of praise from the saint poets along with Chidambaram, Sirkazhi and Madurai.

Inscriptions
Sembian Devi built the temple in its current form and structure converting it to stone construction. She donated generously for the daily pooja and rituals handing silver vessels to the temple.

During the Raja Raja I, a special palanquin was made for the street procession of Lord, for which money was granted from the temple coffers.

Grand Celebrations in Aipasi Sathayam and Aadi Thiruvathirai were introduced. There was a temple assembly  that met regularly at the mandapa to discuss the activities of the temple.

There were 56 grand festivals each year during the rule of Kulothungo I.

The Names
In centuries gone by, the temple has been referred to as Aadaga Kshetram, Kamala Puram, Vanmeega Puram, Muchu Kunda Puram, Andar Gadheswara Puram, Sri Puram, Inder Maageswara Puram and Skanda Puram among many other names.

One finds Nava Durga inside the temple.

Amman makes a once a year trip to Coloroon on Thai Poosam to collect gifts from Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam
Jambukeswarar of Thiruvanaikaval also sends her gifts during the Chariot Festival
Located 15kms North of Srirangam Ranganatha Temple on the Trichy – Madras NH is the Mariamman temple in Samayapuram, a temple whose legend dates back to the period of Vikramaditya. He undertook penance in this Neem Forest and had darshan of kali. It was then that Ambal appeared here as a swayambu idol

Samayapuram is said to be the headquarters of Amman temples.

Amman’s Grand Posture
Mariamman is seen in a Grand, Majestic sitting posture with the Serpent Lord providing her cover over her head. Mariamman is seen with 8 hands, a special feature at this temple and holds all the weapons that Lord Shiva normally possesses.  After destroying the evil forces, she adorned herself with the garland. Her left leg is seen folded with her right leg placed down on the ground in a posture of killing three Asuras. 

In ancient times, amman was seen with wild teeth. However, in one of the Kumbabishekam during the last century this was changed to normal teeth featuring her as a ‘Shantha Swaroopi’ and with a beautiful smiling face.

Gifts from Shiva and Vishnu
Shiva, Vishnu and Brahmma are believed to have invoked the blessings of Mariamman of Samayapuram. To this day, in memory of this legend, she receives gifts on the day of the Chariot Festival from the Jambukeswarar temple in Thiruvanaikaval. Only after receiving the gifts, does she alight from the Chariot and head back to her sanctum.

Similarly on Thai Poosam day, Amman makes an early morning trip to the Coloroon and stays in the Coloroon in the night and returns the next day only after collecting gifts from her family - Srirangam Lord.

When Devaki and Yashoda’s children interchanged and the girl child went with Devaki to Jail, Kamsa tried to kill her thinking it was Devaki’s child. It was there that she displayed her full weaponry with bow/arrow, conch/chakra, soolam, knife, bell, skull and a drum.

Amman changes Form!!!
In the middle of the last century, Tamil cinema actors funded the Poochoodal festival. Dhadhyonam was presented to several thousands of devotees who came in from villages across the state. During the Poochoodal festival, one can see the Mariamman in bo and see the slim and plump forms. During those 28 days true devotees are able to visualise her change from slim to plump form. This was seen as an aakrosham period for her and she is anointed with only Uthiri flowers and not garlands.

Historical Temple
With Kannanur as their capital, the Hoysalas under Veesomavaran built this village and named it as Vikramapuram.  He also built Bhojeswaram, a Shiva temple near Samayapuram. His son Veera Ramanathan’s rule was a golden period for Samayapuram with grand festivals being conducted and several improvements being seen at the temple. Later Vijayanagar rulers too contributed to the development of the temple. 

The utsava deity of mariramman was one for whom pooja was performed by Vijayanagara kings. Once when the Utsava idol was placed here after a tiring trip, to their utter dismay, they found that they could not lift the idol. Later Vijaya Ranga Chokka Nathar (known for the famous event on Kaisika Dwadasi morning) picked up the idol and installed it at Kannanur and then constructed the temple in its current form and structure with three prakaras.

In centuries gone by, it was the noise of the bullock carts that brought Archakas to the temple!!!

Samayapuram Mariamman is believed to be a powerful goddess providing solutions to all the problems of devotees who offer their sincere prayers to her at the temple.

Five Sacred Theerthams
There are several sacred temple tanks associated with this temple. Sakthi Theertham in the South where devotees take bath prior to Anga Pradakshanam, Mayamayi Theertham in the North West was constructed by Vijayanagar kings. Theppotsavam takes place here in Chitrai. This tank is connected to the Peruvalai canal, a tributary of Cauvery. There is inflow and outflow through this canal.

Andal praises Srirangam as a town fortified on all sideswith Impregnable Walls
Andal awaits the Lord's arrival through her street in Srirangam
( Veli Andal Sannidhi - Mel Adayavalanjan)

Two of Andal's favourite temples are Thiru Maliruncholai and Srirangam. Following her praise of the Lord of Thiru Maliruncholai earlier in the Nachiyar Thirumozhi and offering him 100 pots of Butter and Morsel, Andal now praises the Lord of Srirangam describing the town and the personality of Lord Ranganatha. In many of the verses, she refers to him as ' Thiruvaranga Selvanaar'.

Through the verses in the 11thdecad of the Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal recounts her desire to unite with her Lord praising his very many achievements. She wonders as to why her beloved who had saved many women in distress is not showing the same grace on her, one who has totally surrendered to him.  

She asks as to why her beloved Lord is meting out such harsh treatment on her. When Hiranyaksha took Bhoo Devi away, the Lord took Varaha Avatara to destroy the Asura. In another Avatara, when Sisupala was seeking the hand of the Lord’s beloved, he rode away with her on the horse back leaving Sisupala stunned and speechless.

When he has done so much for his loved ones, why is he not reaching out to her despite the fact that she has passed on her love messages to him through so many different communication channels.




Equates his Conch with her Bangles
Once again expressing her desire to meet him and unite with him, Andal reminds her beloved of the bangles that he had taken earlier. The bangles are just as dear to her as is the conch to him.

யாமுக்கும்என்கையில்சங்கமும்ஏந்திழையீர்

Bangles have loosened!!!
Andal praises Lord Ranganatha as being sweet with lovely looks. While the Lord of Arangam relaxing himself on the fierce serpent has beautiful lips, eyes and a red lotus on his navel, the beautiful bangles that he wears as victory anklets are bangles loosened from her. Her Kalavalai (fish shaped bangles) has loosened. She wonders if this is a sign of possibility of not uniting with him. Is that not unfair? She is growing weaker by the day thinking endlessly about her beloved.

While the Dwarapalakas of Srirangam are still showing unity by holding the Shegol and guarding the sanctum sanctorum to this day, she asks if usurping her bangles is a way of showing his authority.

Will he walk through my street


She describes Srirangam as a town with tall mansions, her beloved is the one who came begging as a divine child. If he is not happy with the charity that he has already got and if he wants her bangles is it not right for him to pass through her street.

While he showed his great ability by measuring the entire world in a single stride, he who lives among the Good people of Srirangam should not plan to plunder poor folks like her.

Andal praises Srirangam as a town that is watered by Cauvery. She describes Srirangam as a place where pious people live and where green lush fields are watered by the sacred Cauvery. After having taken everything from her, he has finally invaded and taken her soul as well.

Andal praises the Lord of Srirangam as one who gave up his sleep and food to tame the ocean for the sake of a woman. He also came as a n unwashed dirty swine to lift Mother Earth from the deluge.

Andal asks if he has forgotten the madness that came over him then. And further reminds him that whatever he told Bhoo devi is well etched in memory ( referring to the Varaha Charama Sloka). He had then provided the assurance that whoever offers sincere prayers to the Lord in a stable state of mind and surrenders to him will be taken care of.

He grabbed Rukmini by the hand!!
Rukma, the brother of Rukmini had decided to hand his sister’s hand to the wily Sisupula even though he knew that she was in love with Krishna. Rukmini sent him a letter directing him to arrive immediately and take her from there. Sisupala was all set to marry Rukmini and was confident that no one would be able to take her away from him. But her beloved came in a flash and drove her away with Sisupala shell shocked and ashamed at his inability to prevent her beloved from whisking her away in full public view. Such is the greatness of the Lord of Srirangam. He is known to be a rescuer of women in distress.

When a true devotee expresses helplessness and surrenders to the Lord, he is known to immediately protect them.

Did not Rama once deprived himself of food, water and sleep in his search of Sita and then built the cause away across the huge ocean in an effort to bring her back. All this was because of his great unflinching love for his beloved. If that be the case, why is he not answering my prayers? She describes Srirangam as a town fortified with impregnable walls. All around the temple are large mansions and princely buildings.

Decoding a Complex Cricketing Personality

Took Extreme and Unpopular Decisions - Tried his very best to get results in every way possible to justify those decisions and to prove himself right
Many benefited from this radical approach to everything he did

VB Chandrasekar (VBC) has been and will remain one of my favourite cricketers from Tamil Nadu despite the many battles I have had with him in the last decade. He has lived life his own way laying down his own rules on and off the cricket field. Not always has he succeeded but that does not matter. He reflects a style of leadership that historically has not found easy acceptance. He has had several opportunities over the last decade to soften his approach to one that would find acceptance among others but he has refused to change his distinctive characteristic that is driven by a dictatorial approach of ‘I say You listen/follow and We will succeed together’. Even the worst of reversals did not deter him. He continues to epitomise that approach to life. Even the closest of his contemporaries have many unanswered questions and no one has dared ask him those!!!!

His batsman ship and his approach to cricket always fascinated me, right from those early days in the 80s. He was never short of words on and off the field. A completely inflexible person, he always seemed to hear only his own voice!!! And yet, it is a great tribute to him that he decided to stick to what he believed in and what came naturally to him unmindful of the likely consequences. Throughout his career, he took his own calls and tried his best to make that approach succeed. Many people benefitted from his extreme decisions but many fell by the way side too. The hopeless feeling of the cricket lovers after his abusive language in the YSCA match and the tears of a popular cricket scorer who he dumped remorselessly at the end of a cricketing match were hard to forgive.

Understanding the Persona?
His style and attitude to life and cricket has been difficult to understand for most in the cricketing circles, especially his dominating style of communication at all points of time with all types of cricketers. He has never listened even to the closest of his friends or for that matter to the biggest of the cricketers. Very few seemed to get along with him right from the 80s (To me he seemed a replica of a popular and dominant globally renowned CEO with whom I worked closely for almost 15years). He was always right and the other person was always wrong (if he did not accept his views).

Outstanding Success – as a batsman and captain
It was in the early 1980s that I first saw VBC as a collegiate cricketer in Coimbatore (he was at the CIT). He was also a googly bowler and a wicket keeper in addition to being the dynamic opener. A couple of years later he was in a strong Ranji team of the mid 80s that comprised a number of upcoming youngsters, most of them just of their teens.


In the 2nd half of that decade, he gave TN blistering starts on many occasions including partnering with K Srikkanth. Many a time, his strong technique and stroke play came to the fore and outshone his (international) partner none more so than in the Irani Cup match in 1988, a century that would rank as one of the best in Indian domestic history. It was also an innings that got him international recognition. His performance during that phase especially in club cricket was exceptional and he was one of the most feared players (and captain) in the club circuit.

However, he seemed to swerve from outstanding achievements with the bat and with his team to almost violent aggression on and off the pitch. And this constant swing between the good and the bad continued throughout his cricketing career from the 80s (when he also took over the captaincy of club sides), into the 90s and through the 1st decade and a half of this century as well.

Consensus opinion is that he was born with a Silver (or Golden??) spoon and his approach to life and cricket was a fall out of that. They rate his overly aggressive attitude as being much beyond his game. He tried to lay down his own rules even at College. If things did not go his way, he expressed displeasure even then. He would even boycott!!!

To his credit, he was never short of hard work. In the 80s, he would bat for hours at the nets at his house on D’ Silva Road. Tired bowlers jokingly remark that their shoulders still pain when reminded of their bowling stints at his house.

Neither was he short on the thinking front. His cricketing intellect in a sense gave him a superiority complex. There have been several examples during the last two decades when this came to the fore. Only those who played along with him or watched him and each of his moves would understand the shrewd cricketing brain in him. But it was always led by a dictatorial ‘I am the Boss’ kind of thinking. There were many who benefitted just implementing his thinking and his game plan.

He won the Palayampatti Shield 4 out of 5 years in the early 90s and consistently reaching the final that decade. His team won the annual and prestigious Hindu Trophy 10 years under his captaincy. He also won the Buchi Babu Trophy twice in addition to KSCA, YSCA and Arlem Trophies during that golden phase of his rule. His batting story needs no description. In that period from the mid 80s to the mid 90s, he ripped apart the best of bowlers in the city circuit passing 1000 runs in a league season multiple times. He converted many of his knocks into big hundreds.

But there were many including from the Ranji team of the 1990s who were clearly uncomfortable with his approach. They may not have expressly discussed it with him but the lack of acceptance of his leadership style may have hampered the performance of the state team in the middle of that decade ( both on the batting front and with his captaincy, he was lot more successful for Goa than for TN scoring consistently for the coastal team through his three year stint there).

Summer of 1989 – Only the Jobless watch cricket!!!
I first saw that instinctive aggressive side of VBC from close quarters in the summer of 1989 at a knock out YSCA match at the RKM ground in T. Nagar. In front of 1000s of cricket fans, VBC displayed his aggression in full public view.  Standing at deep mid wicket on the eastern side boundary, he shouted out to the onlookers that ‘Only Vetti Pasanga will come and watch such cricket matches.’

YSCA Trophy organised by Gurumurthy ranked as one of the most popular tournaments in the city circuit and has been an annual feature for almost 50 years now. In the 70s and 80s, almost all the top cricketers played in the tourney. The story of Brijesh Patel repeatedly breaking the glass panes of the houses is legendary. It was the spectator interest that made the tournament popular in the 1980s. And yet, in one of his typical aggressive moments he remarked that it was a tourney for jobless spectators.  He made them feel hopeless that evening with his comments!!!

It was also one of the most abusive comments I had heard in local cricket.  Decades later, he once told me that he may have been provoked to elicit such reaction from him!!! Despite his reasoning, it was a comment completely out of turn for a player of his stature (He was already an international cricketer at that time).  He was a star player in the TN cricketing circle at that point of time and his aggressive batting style generally created a fear in the opposition ranks. And crowds gathered in huge numbers to watch him bat.

Positive Aggression on the field
His positive aggression was best exemplified during his captaincy days when he used a Lloyd like approach to rattle opposition in the 1st division cricket mostly on green top wickets. He was a master strategist with a shrewd cricketing brain and knew the art of winning. During that phase in the 90s, he prepared a road map for every match in the league using J. Gokulakrishnan as his key strike bowler
(Very few know that he would spend hours at the end of the day’s play at different street corners of Madras reviewing the day and chalking out the destruction plan for the next).

And contrasted with this positive aggression on the field, his off field verbose continued. In the years that followed, when he became the captain of the State side, he went out of the way to communicate to his star club bowler, whom he used as a strike weapon in many of his victories for many years that his state captaincy does not automatically guarantee the bowler a place in the squad!!! And in that phase, rarely used his services in the State side (one of the many mysterious cricketing decisions of his life). And years later, when he moved on to another state, he brought back his strike weapon once again and put him to good use once again. When he found Suresh as a tool for back seat driving, he used him with great success for the state. And yet couple of years later, when his game plan changed, he dumped him and moved on.

Such extreme swerves were an inherent part of his decision making. Very few in the cricketing circles came to terms with it both during his playing days and after. Striking hard at others epitomised VB’s personality throughout his career. He always seemed to believe in sending out messages to people that till the time he is around, he was the sole boss of the show.

State Selector – Most Extreme Captaincy Choice in TN History
His dictatorial story continued well past his playing days, one that began with resounding success. As a State selector, much against the run of play and beating down all expectations, he roped in an un-fancied and a silent cricketer to lead the side ahead of many other deserving and established senior cricketers.  That was probably his biggest success on the cricket management front. He cherry picked (Sweety) Suresh out of the blue from nowhere, backed his decision and did everything possible in those two years to ensure that his decision ended up being right!!! (Of course, this was also largely possible because of some extra ordinary match winning performances from the stars in the team).

Two years in a row Tamil Nadu reached the Ranji Final against all odds with a junior member as a captain. And yet when the job was done and success achieved and he found the captain not meeting his requirement any more, he dumped him summarily and moved on in life.  

In his book, there is no room for emotions in cricket. Like with his batting, in all his cricketing roles, he struck as he saw and it was always hard hitting. Nothing other than the moment mattered to him. If he believed that something would work for TN cricket/ his club cricket and himself, he was vocal about it and stuck to it. He almost always got what he wanted. Else he protested and boycotted vehemently. There were no two ways about it.  When he took decisions (right or wrong), he tried his very best to ensure that results went his way to justify the decision. The captaincy handed to the silent cricketer was one such example (It was probably the most extreme captaincy call in many decades and he came up with the best of results in two successive years).  This was one of the many extreme decisions he took in his career.

All the stars in the team were on the verge of an international call at that time and there was a possibility that they may not have been available through the season. Suresh was the only one leading the club side at that time and he had achieved great success in the previous two years. And then he scored a century in each innings in a Buchi Babu match as a captain and that was enough for VBC to shoulder the state captaincy on him. It would give him room for back seat driving to infuse his thought process in all the decisions through the two years. For VBC, it was to be the first and the most successful of his dictatorial methods post his playing days. A lot of what followed over the next decade turned against him solely arising out of his ‘I am the boss of the entire process in every role I take up’. Very few were ready to accept that approach in the years that followed.

National Selector – Throwing his weight around
15 years after the YSCA episode, I umpired a V Division league match at PS High School ground, one that involved his team Varsity Occasionals. That period was yet another high phase in his life. He was at the peak of his powers as a national selector. As I signalled a six (his team was fielding), he revolted in his typical style from outside the boundary line, from where he was controlling his young team comprising of his academy boys!!!

He urged the young teenaged captain to get me to reverse my decision. In a matter of minutes his close friend and Hony Secy of TNCA Dr. Natarajan pulled up a chair and sat inside the ground in support of VBC and asked me as to what I could do (I stopped the match and asked him to stay out of the ground!!!!).

 It was the oddest thing I had encountered in my umpiring career - that of a person holding the post of a National Selector protesting in this explosive way. That evening at the end of the match (one that his team lost), he got on to a typically vehement argument with me on my decision.

He expected me to buckle and surrender to him and nod to his points. But I stood up that evening for the role of an umpire. I sent home the message that the designation of national selector did not give him an automatic right to question the decision of an umpire and to influence his young captain (as a captain, especially in local cricket, he himself was known for that approach) to boss over the umpire. Once he struck down the stumps at SPIC after being given out, protesting against the umpire’s decision (in a style similar to Michael Holding’s in a test match in New Zealand)

Even MSD did not matter to him
Unfortunately, the dictatorial attitude and ‘do as I say’ character that helped him as a player and captain at the club level and a State Selector did not always work in his favour.

As the mentor of the CSK team, he probably had the best job in town in the IPL working alongside MSD. NS ( N Srinivasan) trusted him and handed him the Mentor's job to pick the CSK side in the 1st year of IPL's launch. And to VBC's credit, he did an outstanding job in picking up some terrific players. He was instrumental and brain behind CSK coming together as a great team in the initial phase.

But in no time, he had to move away for his dictatorial ways (even if the thinking and strategy may have been correct during that phase) did not go well with the other powers that be. As one looks back, one has to compliment him for his gutsy decision to stick his neck out, even when he knew the likely consequences. Almost every other mentor in this cricketing world would have silently prodded on with one of the greatest Indian cricketers and enjoyed that company for as long as they could and climbed on to the next level of fame. But not VBC. If he had a view point (and most times he has one), you would expect him to implement that be it with the 1st division club or CSK, with the local cricketers or with MSD!!! The fact that he did not continue in his role at CSK does not make him any smaller!!! He showed that philosophically he would stick to his approach with every cricketer irrespective of name and fame. Where it did not gain acceptance, he stood to lose.

TN Ranji Team – Do you know who I am and My Achievements
Then he was handed the coaching assignment of the state team on a platter (he had not been associated with the state team at any level for a long time).  NS trusted him again and believed that VBC was the ideal man to lead TN's long term progress. And hence it should have been an ideal long term platform for him to be associated with the State working both with international players in his team and the upcoming stars. But he had no patience to understand the players. Instead he expected them to understand him. No sooner did he get the job, his dictatorial ways once again took over him and came to the fore. There were those in the early 90s who swore by him and played by his rules and achieved success.

But this was a new generation of youngsters who had played international cricket and were probably bigger stars than him. And they saw in themselves bigger cricketing personalities than their coach. He may have been right in many of the cricketing strategies that he tried to bring to the table in that phase. But ‘only my strategy works and all else will have to wait’ did not find acceptance in the dressing room leading him to stay out of one of the Ranji matches even though he was still the coach - something that had never happened with the TN Ranji team.

And within 9 months, yet another opportunity had gone by the way side.

For the first time in his life, after he quit the coaching role he turned philosophical with a lovely introspective message on his Google Chat Display. And recently he remarked even more philosophically that if 9 out of 14 players did not accept his thought process and the approach, then he probably did not deserve to be the coach. The truth in life though is not that. There are exceptions in life and VBC is clearly one such character. He lives and dies by his rules. In different phases in life, people with such unique characteristics will see extreme swings.

TV Commentator
His striking, direct and probing questions in post match captain’s interviews as a TV commentator were not in line with Indian sports anchors’ style and there was a need to soften the questions and tagging along the line of the producers. VBC refused to do that for he was not the one for pre-prepared straight forward simple questions. His superiority in terms of instantly understanding the nuances of play can be seen from his stint at the commentary box but even there he does not stop with his cricketing opinions. And is constantly seen needling his fellow commentators much to their displeasure. This needling was yet another facet of his persona. At the end of a match which his team won, he went up to the star MOM awardee and told him that it was he (VBC) who actually deserved the award but was kind enough to let it go for this youngster.

15 years ago, he spent 3 1/2hours with me at his house to share his future plans in cricket. By the same token, when he decided that he would not meet me for a story soon after I wrote an All time TN XI (where he did not find him a place), he stuck by that and has refused to meet me on that story for almost 10 years now despite my continued persistence. There again was a hint of his unchangeable character. In one of his angry moods, he once told me in response to my meeting request ‘I do not have time for people like you.’ If it suits him, he has all the time in the world. If it does not, he is always unavailable, like many cricketers have found over the decades. He also laid down bizarre non cricketing rules. Many a time, you would see him with stylish coolers but no other person was allowed to wear one while in a discussion with him!!!

The Leadership Style
Unfortunately in this world, very few are able to get away with dictatorial leadership. Venkataraghavan struggled in most of his non playing roles (except umpiring) for very few could handle his commanding style but in his case his exceptional achievements as a player silenced his detractors for a while though he too did find acceptance in most of his roles.

In the last decade or so, I have had many written battles with VB. And yet, he remains one of my favourite cricketers from Tamil Nadu. He is fearless. Consequences do not matter to him. He is probably the best cricketing brain that TN has seen after Venkat.

When those around (such characters) accept such leaders, there is likely to be an upswing (and probably success) – In VBC’s case, this was seen with his success at the club level and in the two years with the Ranji team. But in certain other phases in life and as generations pass by, it is very likely that such characters will see a huge revolt against their dominating leadership style (as was seen in IPL and with the TN Ranji team recently). VBC has lived through both in his cricketing lifetime. The most pleasing thing is that he has taken on the ups and downs really well. He was on a big high when people accepted him as a leader and went ahead aggressively in his quest for victory.

But when acceptance waned over a period of time - be it from the top Indian star or the local TN stars, he accepted the decision and moved on. Not once in the last decade, in many of the interactions he has had with me has he made a single remark against any of them.

He probably has understood himself better than most others (have understood him) in his life. And probably long ago resigned himself to the fact that his success or failure depended on the acceptance of his leadership style for it was not within him to go with a consensus approach by changing himself to meet the needs of others. He worked well with those who accepted his decisions and they are grateful for his contribution to the game (though even with them, his decision making was always driven with an agenda to achieve his goals – many fell by the way side during his rule) And with others, he parted ways very quickly as the marriage just did not work for mutual benefit.

He donned the role of dashing opener, aggressive captain, dominating selector, dictatorial coach and mentor in his career. One always wondered as to how it would have been, had he only softened his stance and carried people along. And yet that would have undermined his greatest strength – a Great Dictatorial Leader of our time with as an astute Cricketing Brain, who set high standards for himself and expected others to follow without a discussion or debate!!!

Any advice to me on ‘Love and its futility’ is like one given by the deaf to the dumb - Andal

Lips have turned white, Appetite has been lost, Nights have turned longer, Body has lost its colour, mind has lost its thought process and her honour and dignity are corrupted


Having addressed the cuckoo and peacock, the conch and the clouds earlier in the Nachiyar Thirumozhi, Andal, in this 12th decad, now reaches out to the world at large and her relatives and friends asking them to take her to her beloved. She is upset with reactions of some of them and hits out at the people who scoffed at her love for the Lord. Andal calls herself as living in ecstasy in a world of love with the Lord. In such a delirious state any advice to her will seem like one given by a deaf to a dumb and is unlikely to have any impact on her. She will have no answers for such people.

Praising him as one who in his childhood had wrestled with ease, she asks to be taken to Mathura for a meeting with him.

Her Love is no more a Secret
Her love for the Lord is no more a secret, now that everyone, including her neighbours, have become aware of it.  She threatens them saying that if they are genuine well wishers of her and if they want to do good to her, they should immediately take her to Ayarpadi without any further delay.

She says for long she has put up with the slander that she has strayed away from her parents and relatives and been lost in his thoughts. But she is undaunted by such criticism. She wants them to take her and leave her at the doorstop of Nanda’s house in the middle of the night.

She describes the contrasting scenario at that place. The young virgin maidens are sitting with broken hearts while Nanda’s son has been playing around with them taking advantage of their infatuation for him, in the process ruining their reputation.

தனிவழியேபோயினாள்என்னும்சொல்லு
வந்தபின்னைப்பழிகாப்பரிது
மாயவன்வந்துஉருக்காட்டுகின்றான்

Her breasts have weakened thinking about him. With thoughts only of the conch wielding Lord, they keep away from other mortals and she says that her breasts are dedicated exclusively only to his embrace.

Describing the achievement of her Lord, she praises him as one who climbed the Kadamba tree and trampled the serpent Kaliya and danced on his hood. It is difficult for anyone to understand her feelings for him. But the only thing that she is seeking for in life is his caress and wants to be taken to the banks of the river where he had encountered the venomous demon.

Ill Effects of falling in Love
Her separation from the Lord has caused a lot of ill effects on her body. She has become pale and has been in a state of depression. Her lips have turned white. In recent times, she has had a loss of appetite. Her nights have been turning longer for she is losing ‘sleep over him’. ‘Her body has lost its colour, mind has lost its thought process and her honour and dignity are corrupted


The only thing that will get her back to normalcy is the union with her and the Lord presenting the Tulasi garland to her.

Interestingly she also praises the valourous ability of her beloved’s brother Balarama citing the example of his destruction of Pralamba by tearing apart the thighs of the asura.

How to look at others with positivity
In another verse, Andal provides a great lesson on being positive in life. She warns the young ladies not to talk ill of her Lord that he only grazes cows, was born in a lower clan and stole butter in his childhood. It seems as if others are suggesting that she go after Rama instead of the lowly Krishna. This infuriates here and she hits back asking them to keep their learning to themselves. Do not insult him thus. There is no point listening to such things. Do they not remember how he protected the entire universe by holding the huge Govardhana Mountain with one hand, she asks.

கற்றினம்மேய்க்கிலும்மேய்க்கப்பெற்றான்
காடுவாழ்சாதியுமாகப்பெற்றான்
பற்றியுரலிடையாப்புமுண்டான்
பாவிகாள்உங்களுக்குஏச்சுக்கொலோ

Even the very parrot that is dear to her has started calling out his name much to her annoyance. In anger, she did not feed the parrot for a few days. And this backfired on her as to her surprise, the parrot started calling out his name even more loudly singing his praise as the one who measured the entire earth in a single stride.

கோவிந்தாஎன்றுஅழைக்கும்

ஊட்டம்கொடாதுசெறுப்பனாகில்
உலகளந்தான்என்றுஉயரக்கூவும்

Throughout this 12thdecad of the Nachiyar Thirumozhi, she expresses a desire to be taken to Dwaraka and Mathura, to Bhakta Vilochana where Balarama and Krishna were fed by rishis and to each of those sacred places where he displayed extraordinary strength to save the world and protect the devotees. Andal says her approach to attain her Lord is to visit places where her beloved played during his childhood.

Describing Dwaraka as a town with beautiful tall mansions, she wants to be taken there immediately, instead of constantly having to suffer abuse from the world of her slander.


Only those who have undergone the process of Saranagathi will realise the immediate need in reaching out to him and uniting with him. The only medicine to cure her from her current state is to see him with her own eyes and says that she is longing for his caress.
